Project description:The prevalence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in ground and surface water has sparked the search for more effective methods to remove EOCs from the environment. In pursuit of a solution for this environmental concern, herein we present the development of reusable films based on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and the block copolymer, poly(4-vinylpyridine-b-ethylene oxide) (P4VP-PEO) to adsorb sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as an EOC model compound. We hypothesize that the adsorption of SMX was achieved mainly by π-π interactions between the pyridine functionalities of the block copolymer and the electron deficient phenyl group of the SMX. Preceding preparation of the films, CNFs were modified with the alkoxysilane trimethoxy(2-phenylethyl)silane (TMPES) to increase their stability in aqueous solution. After the addition of P4VP-PEO, the process was completed by filtration followed by oven-drying. XPS and FTIR were employed to confirm the addition of TMPES and P4VP-PEO, respectively. Adsorption batch experiments were performed in aqueous solutions of SMX at a neutral pH, obtaining adsorptions of up to 0.014 mmol/g in a moderate time of 60 min. For the reusability tests, films were immersed in ethanol 95 wt.% to elude the adsorbed SMX, rinsed with deionized (DI) water, and dried at room temperature to be reused in a new adsorption cycle. We found that this new composite material could be reused several times with negligible loss of adsorption capacity. The films presented have been shown to be of substantial importance for water remediation as they find direct application in the adsorption of electron deficient aromatic compounds and are reusable.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new type of crystalline porous polymers known for chemical stability, excellent structural regularity, robust framework, and inherent porosity, making them promising materials for capturing various types of pollutants from aqueous solutions. This review thoroughly presents the recent progress and advances of COFs and COF-based materials as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and organic pollutants. Information about the interaction mechanisms between various pollutants and COF-based materials are summarized from the macroscopic and microscopic standpoints, including batch experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The adsorption properties of various COF-based materials are assessed and compared with other widely used adsorbents. Several commonly used strategies to enhance COF-based materials' adsorption performance and the relationship between structural property and sorption ability are also discussed. Finally, a summary and perspective on the opportunities and challenges of COFs and COF-based materials are proposed to provide some inspiring information on designing and fabricating COFs and COF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Project description:The effective removal of uranium from an aqueous solution is a highly valuable process for the environment and health. In this study, we developed a facile and rapid method to synthesize hierarchically porous Cu-BTC (RT-Cu-BTC) using a cooperative template strategy. The as-synthesized RT-Cu-BTC exhibited hierarchically porous structure and excellent thermostability, as revealed by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Compared with conventional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites, the obtained RT-Cu-BTC exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity (839.7 mg·g-1) and high removal efficiency (99.8%) in the capture of uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the conditions such as adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature in adsorption of uranium (VI) by RT-Cu-BTC were investigated in detail. The thermodynamics data demonstrated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the uranium (VI) adsorption process. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models could better reflect the adsorption process of uranium (VI) onto RT-Cu-BTC. In addition, the as-synthesized RT-Cu-BTC showed excellent stability in removing uranium (VI) from an aqueous solution. This work provides a facile and rapid approach for fabricating hierarchically porous MOFs to realize a highly efficient removal of uranium (VI) from aqueous systems.

Project description:This paper provides an overview of recent research performed on the applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for microplastics (MPs) removal from aqueous environments. MPs pollution has become a major environmental concern due to its negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Therefore, developing effective and sustainable methods for removing them from aqueous environments is crucial. In recent years, MOFs have emerged as a promising solution for this purpose due to their unique properties such as high surface area, renewability, chemical stability, and versatility. Moreover, their specific properties such as their pore size and chemical composition can be tailored to enhance their efficiency in removing MPs. It has been shown that MOFs can effectively adsorb MPs from aqueous media in the range of 70-99.9%. Besides some high price concerns, the main drawback of using MOFs is their powder form which can pose challenges due to their instability. This can be addressed by supporting MOFs on other substrates such as aerogels or foams. Meanwhile, there is a need for more research to investigate the long-term stability of MOFs in aqueous environments and developing efficient regeneration methods for their repeated use.

Project description:MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied to the adsorptions of five aromatic amines from aqueous solutions. These three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis. The adsorption mechanism of three MOFs and the effects of the structures of MOFs on the adsorption of aromatic amines were discussed. The results show that the cavity system and suitable hydrogen bond acceptor were important factors for the adsorption for five aromatic amines of aniline, 1-naphthalamine, o-toluidine, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-nitroaniline: (a) the saturated adsorption capacity of aniline, 1-naphthylamine and o-toluidine on MIL-100(Fe) were 52.0, 53.4 and 49.6 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and cavity system diffusion. (b) The adsorption capacity of 2-nitroaniline and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) were 54.3 and 25.0 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the more suitable pore size of MIL-101(Cr) than that of MIL-100(Fe, Cr). The MOFs of MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) can be potential materials for removing aromatic amines from aqueous solutions.

Project description:Iron-modified biochar can be used as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to remove the phosphate in wastewater because of its low cost. In this study, Fe-containing materials, such as zero-valent iron (ZVI), goethite, and magnetite, were successfully loaded on biochar. The phosphate adsorption mechanisms of the three Fe-modified biochars were studied and compared. Different characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were used to study the physicochemical properties of the biochars. The dosage, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, solution concentration of phosphate, and regeneration evaluations were carried out. Among the three Fe-modified biochars, biochar modified by goethite (GBC) is more suitable for phosphate removal in acidic conditions, especially when the pH = 2, while biochar modified by ZVI (ZBC) exhibits the fastest adsorption rate. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities, calculated by the Langmuir-Freundlich isothermal model, are 19.66 mg g-1, 12.33 mg g-1, and 2.88 mg g-1 for ZBC, GBC, and CSBC (biochar modified by magnetite), respectively. However, ZBC has a poor capacity for reuse. The dominant mechanism for ZBC is surface precipitation, while for GBC and CSBC, the major mechanisms are ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. The results of our study can enhance the understanding of phosphate removal mechanisms by Fe-modified biochar and can contribute to the application of Fe-modified biochar for phosphate removal in water.

Project description:Active photocatalysts with an efficiency of 99% were prepared for the degradation of the industrial dye, methylene blue (MB), under visible light irradiation. These photocatalysts comprised Co/Ni-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), to which bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) was added as a filler to prepare Co/Ni-MOF@BiOI composites. The composites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation of MB in aqueous solutions. The effects of various parameters, including the pH, reaction time, catalyst dose, and MB concentration, on the photocatalytic activity of the prepared catalysts were also evaluated. We believe that these composites are promising photocatalysts for the removal of MB from aqueous solutions under visible light.

Project description:Hollow magnetic Fe3O4@NH2-MIL-101(Fe) derived from metal-organic frameworks are fabricated through a general facile strategy. The synthetic parameters are regulated to control the shape of the as-prepared samples. The concentration of phosphates decreased sharply from the initial 0.60 to 0.045?mg.L(-1) with the exposure time in 50?minutes. The correlation between the most significant parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dose, pH, as well as adsorption capacities was optimized, and the effects of these parameters on the removal efficiency of phosphates were investigated. Surface functionalization of magnetic hollow materials is a well-designed way to bridge the gap between high adsorption activity, excellent separation and recovery of phosphates from the water treatment system. Therefore, it exhibits a remarkable selective removal of phosphates from aqueous solution.

Project description:As a model for the removal of complex organic contaminants from industrial water effluents, the heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamin 6G was studied using TiO2-derived catalysts, incorporated in water as suspension as well as supported in raschig rings. UV and Visible light were tested for the photo-degradation process. TiO2 catalysts were synthesized following acid synthesis methodology and compared against commercial TiO2 catalyst samples (Degussa P25 and Anatase). The bandgap (Eg) of the TiO2 catalysts was determined, were values of 2.97 and 2.98 eV were obtained for the material obtained using acid and basic conditions, respectively, and 3.02 eV for Degussa P25 and 3.18 eV for anatase commercial TiO2 samples. Raschig rings-supported TiO2 catalysts display a good photocatalytic performance when compared to equivalent amounts of TiO2 in aqueous suspension, even though a large surface area of TiO2 material is lost upon support. This is particularly evident by taking into account that the characteristics (XRD, RD, Eg) and observed photodegradative performance of the synthesized catalysts are in good agreement with the commercial TiO2 samples, and that the RH6G photodegradation differences observed with the light sources considered are minimal in the presence of TiO2 catalysts. The presence of additives induce changes in the kinetics and efficiency of the TiO2-catalyzed photodegradation of Rh6G, particularly when white light is used in the process, pointing toward a complex phenomenon, however the stability of the supported photocatalytic systems is acceptable in the presence of the studied additives. In line with this, the magnitude of the chemical oxygen demand, indicates that, besides the different complex photophysical processes taking place, the endproducts of the considered photocatalytic systems appears to be similar.
