Project description:In this work, we investigated the photocatalytic removal of NOx using 3D-printed supports. Monolithic supports with internal channels were fabricated by Fused Modelling Deposition (FDM) using PET as the filament feedstock. The printing parameters of the supports were optimized to maximize the exposure of the photocatalyst to UV light throughout the monolithic PET printed supports. The removal experiments were carried out in a continuous gas phase flow reactor, which was custom designed in-house incorporating a 3D printed PET support impregnated with TiO2 as photocatalyst. The impregnated and non-impregnated supports were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectrometry, SEM and AFM. The effect of several key-factors on the NOx removal capacity was investigated, including the type of PET filament (native recycled, BPET vs. glycol-modified, PETG), the type of TiO2 (P25 vs. Hombikat UV-100), the UV light source (LED vs. tubular lamps), and the number of deposited TiO2 layers. The highest NO and NOx removal were achieved by using PETG supports coated with a single layer of Hombikat UV-100 and irradiating the flat reactor from both sides using two sets of black light lamps. However, the highest selectivity toward nitrate formation was obtained when using P25 under the same experimental conditions. This work demonstrates that 3D printing is a reliable and powerful technique for fabricating photocatalytic reactive supports that can serve as a versatile platform for evaluating photocatalytic performance.

Project description:The persulfate-based advanced oxidation process is a promising method for degrading organic pollutants. Herein, TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts were combined with the peroxydisulfate ion (PDS) to enhance the efficiency. ZnO was significantly more efficient in PDS conversion and SO4•- generation than TiO2. For ZnO, the PDS increased the transformation rate of the trimethoprim antibiotic from 1.58 × 10-7 M s-1 to 6.83 × 10-7 M s-1. However, in the case of TiO2, the moderated positive effect was manifested mainly in O2-free suspensions. The impact of dissolved O2 and trimethoprim on PDS transformation was also studied. The results reflected that the interaction of O2, PDS, and TRIM with the surface of the photocatalyst and their competition for photogenerated charges must be considered. The effect of radical scavengers confirmed that in addition to SO4•-, •OH plays an essential role even in O2-free suspensions, and the contribution of SO4•- to the transformation is much more significant for ZnO than for TiO2. The negative impact of biologically treated domestic wastewater as a matrix was manifested, most probably because of the radical scavenging capacity of Cl- and HCO3-. Nevertheless, in the case of ZnO, the positive effect of PDS successfully overcompensates that, due to the efficient SO4•- generation. Reusability tests were performed in Milli-Q water and biologically treated domestic wastewater, and only a slight decrease in the reactivity of ZnO photocatalysts was observed.

Project description:Fe3O4/MOF (metal organic framework)/l-cysteine was synthesized and applied for the removal of Cd(ii) from wastewater. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated, and the results indicated that the adsorption obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 248.24 mg g-1. Fe3O4/MOF/l-cysteine was further applied to determine trace amounts of Cd(ii) in real water samples using ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy) based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The determination limit was 10.6 ng mL-1. Additionally, Fe3O4/MOF/l-cysteine can also be used as a fluorescent sensor for "turn-off" detection of Cd(ii), and the detection limit was 0.94 ng mL-1.

Project description:Pure and Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, BET, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show a dependence between the crystallite size and the amount of dopant, which decreases from 13.02 to 12.81 nm. The same behavior was observed in the optical properties, where the band gap decreased from 3.2 to 2.86 eV. The arsenic (V) adsorption was tested in aqueous solution containing 5 mg/L of arsenic and 0.5 g/L of adsorbent at pH 7 and in dark conditions. The results indicate that the TiO2-B sample shows a higher arsenic removal, reaching 88% arsenic removal from the water at pH 7. Thus, it is also shown that the best performance occurs at pH 5, where it reaches an arsenic removal of 94%. Ion competition studies show that arsenic removal capacity is slightly affected by chloride, carbonate, nitrate, and sulfate ions. According to the results, the synthesized samples are a promising material for treating arsenic-contaminated water.

Project description:Outdoor and indoor air pollution has become a global concern in modern society. Although many policies and regulations on air quality have been promulgated worldwide over the past decades, airborne pollution still negatively affects health and therefore the life-style of human beings. One of the strategies to challenge this problem might be reducing the amount of airborne pollutant by mineralising them via photoinduced reactions. Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous pollutants via titanium dioxide is one of the most promising solar photochemical reactions. In this research work, by means of a green sol-gel procedure, we have coupled titania to graphene (0.5 and 1.0 wt%) aiming to increase the solar photocatalytic activity of the produced hybrid materials. Transient paramagnetic species formed upon UV-A irradiation were detected by means of EPR spectroscopy. The photocatalytic reactions were assessed by monitoring the removal of nitrogen oxides and two different volatile organic compounds (benzene and isopropanol), which has never been assessed before. Our results highlight the exceptional characteristics of the TiO2/graphene hybrid material synthesised with 1.0 wt% graphene, and its excellent suitability for multi-purpose applications in the field of environmental remediation. Compared to unmodified titania, it shows a clear enhancement in the photocatalytic removal of those hazardous pollutants, having a photocatalytic degradation rate twice higher. In addition, the same material is highly stable and shows fully recyclability over repeated tests. Hybrid titania-graphene materials could thus be exploited to grant safer outdoor and indoor environments, having thus a beneficial impact on public health and on the quality of our lives.

Project description:A novel recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunoassay was demonstrated and exhibited extremely high sensitivity toward prostate specific antigen (PSA). The immunoassay, which possessed a sandwich structure, was constructed of multifunctional Fe3O4@TiO2@Au nanocomposites as immune probe and Ag-coated sandpaper as immune substrate. First, by adjusting the density of outside Au seeds on Fe3O4@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles (NPs), the structure-dependent SERS and photocatalytic performance of the samples was explored by monitoring and degradating 4-mercaptobenzonic acid (4MBA). Afterwards, the SERS enhancement capability of Ag-coated sandpaper with different meshes was investigated, and a limit of detection (LOD), as low as 0.014 mM, was achieved by utilizing the substrate. Subsequently, the recyclable feasibility of PSA detection was approved by zeta potential measurement, absorption spectra, and SEM images and, particularly, more than 80% of SERS intensity still existed after even six cycles of immunoassay. The ultralow LOD of the recyclable immunoassay was finally calculated to be 1.871 pg/mL. Therefore, the recyclable SERS-based immunoassay exhibits good application prospects for diagnosis of cancer in clinical measurements.

Project description:This research employed g-C3N4 nanosheets in the hydrothermal synthesis of TiO2/g-C3N4 hybrid photocatalysts. The TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunctions, well-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles on the g-C3N4 nanosheets, are effective photocatalysts for the degradation of monochlorophenols (MCPs: 2-CP, 3-CP, and 4-CP) which are prominent water contaminants. The removal efficiency of 2-CP and 4-CP reached 87% and 64%, respectively, after treatment of 25 ppm CP solutions with the photocatalyst (40TiO2/g-C3N4, 1 g/L) and irradiation with UV-Vis light. Treatment of CP solutions with g-C3N4 nanosheets or TiO2 alone in conjunction with irradiation gave removal efficiencies lower than 50%, which suggests the two act synergically to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the 40TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposite. Superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are key active species produced during CP photodegradation. In addition, the observed nitrogen and Ti3+ defects and oxygen vacancies in the TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites may improve the light-harvesting ability of the composite and assist preventing rapid electron-hole recombination on the surface, enhancing the photocatalytic performance. In addition, interfacial interactions between the MCPs (low polarity) and thermally exfoliated carbon nitride in the TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites may also enhance MCP degradation.

Project description:An important industrial process that often occurs on the surface of a heterogeneous catalyst using thermochemical or photochemical could help in the oxidation of methanol-based wastewater to formaldehyde. Titania-based photocatalysts have drawn a lot of interest from scientists because they are a reliable and affordable catalyst material for photocatalytic oxidation processes in the presence of light energy. In this study, a straight-forward hydrothermal method for producing n-TiO2@α-Fe2O3 composite photocatalysts and hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanocubes has been done. By adjusting the ratio of n-TiO2 in the prepared composite photocatalysts, the enhancing influence of the nitrogen-doped titania on the photocatalytic characteristics of the prepared materials was investigated. The prepared materials were thoroughly characterized using common physiochemical methods, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), physisorption (BET), and others, in order to learn more about the structure The results obtained showed that nitrogen-doped titania outperforms non-doped titania for methanol photooxidation. The addition of nitrogen-doped titania to their surfaces resulted in an even greater improvement in the photooxidation rates of the methanol coupled with hematite. The photooxidation of methanol in the aqueous solution to simulate its concentration in the wastewater has been occurred. After 3 h, the four weight percent of n-TiO2@α-Fe2O3 photocatalyst showed the highest rate of HCHO production.

Project description:Two series of Fe2O3/TiO2 samples were prepared via impregnation and photodeposition methods. The effect of preparation method on the properties and performance of Fe2O3/TiO2 for photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under UV light irradiation was examined. The Fe2O3/TiO2 nanocomposites prepared by impregnation showed lower activity than the unmodified TiO2, mainly due to lower specific surface area caused by heat treatment. On the other hand, the Fe2O3/TiO2 nanocomposites prepared by photodeposition showed higher photocatalytic activity than the unmodified TiO2. Three times higher photocatalytic activity was obtained on the best photocatalyst, Fe2O3(0.5)/TiO2. The improved activity of TiO2 after photodeposition of Fe2O3 was contributed to the formation of a heterojunction between the Fe2O3 and TiO2 nanoparticles that improved charge transfer and suppressed electron-hole recombination. A further investigation on the role of the active species on Fe2O3/TiO2 confirmed that the crucial active species were both holes and superoxide radicals. The Fe2O3(0.5)/TiO2 sample also showed good stability and reusability, suggesting its potential for water purification applications.

Project description:Heterostructures of TiO2@Fe2O3 with a specific electronic structure and morphology enable us to control the interfacial charge transport necessary for their efficient photocatalytic performance. In spite of the extensive research, there still remains a profound ambiguity as far as the band alignment at the interface of TiO2@Fe2O3 is concerned. In this work, the extended type I heterojunction between anatase TiO2 nanocrystals and α-Fe2O3 hematite nanograins is proposed. Experimental evidence supporting this conclusion is based on direct measurements such as optical spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and the results of indirect studies of photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) with selected scavengers of various active species of OH•, h•, e-, and •O2-. The presence of small 6-8 nm Fe2O3 crystallites at the surface of TiO2 has been confirmed in HRTEM images. Irregular 15-50 nm needle-like hematite grains could be observed in scanning electron micrographs. Substitutional incorporation of Fe3+ ions into the TiO2 crystal lattice is predicted by a 0.16% decrease in lattice parameter a and a 0.08% change of c, as well as by a shift of the Raman Eg(1) peak from 143 cm-1 in pure TiO2 to 149 cm-1 in Fe2O3-modified TiO2. Analysis of O 1s XPS spectra corroborates this conclusion, indicating the formation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of titanium(IV) oxide. The presence of the Fe3+ impurity level in the forbidden band gap of TiO2 is revealed by the 2.80 eV optical transition. The size effect is responsible for the absorption feature appearing at 2.48 eV. Increased photocatalytic activity within the visible range suggests that the electron transfer involves high energy levels of Fe2O3. Well-programed experiments with scavengers allow us to eliminate the less probable mechanisms of RhB photodecomposition and propose a band diagram of the TiO2@Fe2O3 heterojunction.
