Project description:In this work, we report the stabilization of the reduced states of pyromellitic diimide by charge-balancing the imide radical anions with cationic pyridinium groups attached to the aromatic core. This structural modification is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Characterization by (spectro)electrochemical experiments and computations reveal that the addition of cationic groups to an already electron-deficient ring system results in up to +0.57 V shifts in reduction potentials, largely as a consequence of charge screening and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowering effects. This formal charge-balancing approach to stabilizing the reduced states of electron-deficient pyromellitic diimides will facilitate their incorporation into spin-based optoelectronic materials and devices.

Project description:Dichalcogenolenes are archetypal redox non-innocent ligands with numerous applications. Herein, a diselenolene ligand with fundamentally different electronic properties is described. A mesoionic diselenolene was prepared by selenation of a C2-protected imidazolium salt. This ligand is diamagnetic, which is in contrast to the paramagnetic nature of standard dichalcogenolene monoanions. The new ligand is also redox-active, as demonstrated by isolation of a stable diselenolene radical dianion. The unique electronic properties of the new ligand give rise to unusual coordination chemistry. Thus, preparation of a hexacoordinate aluminum tris(diselenolene) complex and a Lewis acidic aluminate complex with two ligand-centered unpaired electrons was achieved.

Project description:The creation of artificial light-harvesting complexes involves the ordered arrangement of chromophores in space. To guarantee efficient energy-transfer processes, organic dyes must be brought into close proximity, often leading to aggregation and the formation of excimer states. In recent years, the attachment of ligand-based chromophores to nanoparticles has also generated interest in relation to improved solar harvesting and spin-dependent electronic interactions such as singlet fission and upconversion. We explore the covalent attachment of two novel perylene-diimide (PDI) carboxylic acid ligands to silicon dioxide nanoparticles. This allows us to study electronic interactions between the ligands when attached to nanoparticles because these cannot couple to the wide band gap silicon dioxide. One of the synthesized PDI ligands has sterically hindering phenols in the bay position and undergoes minimal optical changes upon attachment, but the other forms an excimer state with a red-shifted and long-lived florescence. As such, molecular structure changes offer a method to tune weak and strong interactions between ligand layers on nanocrystal surfaces.

Project description:Chiral supramolecular structures are attracting great attention due to their specific properties and high potential in chiral sensing and separation. Herein, supramolecular assembling behaviors of chiral perylene diimides have been systematically investigated in a mixed solution of tetrahydrofuran and water. They exhibit remarkably different morphologies and chiral aggregation behaviors depending on the mixing ratio of the solvents, i.e., the fraction of water. The morphogenesis and optoelectronic properties of chiral supramolecular structures have been thoroughly studied using a range of experimental and theoretical methods to investigate the morphological effects of chiral supramolecular assemblies on the electrical performances and photogenerated charge-carrier behaviors. In addition, chiral perylene diimides have been discriminated by combining vibrational circular dichroism with theoretical calculations, for the first time. The chiral supramolecular nanostructures developed herein strongly absorb visible spectral region and exhibit high photoresponsivity and detectivity, opening up new opportunities for practical applications in optoelectronics.

Project description:A chiral perylene diimide building block has been prepared based on an amine derivative of the amino acid L-phenylalanine. Detailed studies were carried out into the self-assembly behaviour of the material in solution and the solid state using UV/Vis, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy. For the charged building block BTPPP, the molecular chirality of the side chains is translated into the chiral supramolecular structure in the form of right-handed helical aggregates in aqueous solution. Temperature-dependent UV/Vis studies of BTPPP in aqueous solution showed that the self-assembly behaviour of this dye can be well described by an isodesmic model in which aggregation occurs to generate short stacks in a reversible manner. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies (WXRD) revealed that this material self-organises into aggregates with ?-? stacking distances typical for ?-conjugated materials. TEM investigations revealed the formation of self-assembled structures of low order and with no expression of chirality evident. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy (POM) were used to investigate the mesophase properties. Optical textures representative of columnar liquid-crystalline phases were observed for solvent-annealed samples of BTPPP. The high solubility, tunable self-assembly and chiral ordering of these materials demonstrate their potential as new molecular building blocks for use in the construction of chiro-optical structures and devices.

Project description:Natural photosystems use protein scaffolds to control intermolecular interactions that enable exciton flow, charge generation, and long-range charge separation. In contrast, there is limited structural control in current organic electronic devices such as OLEDs and solar cells. We report here the DNA-encoded assembly of π-conjugated perylene diimides (PDIs) with deterministic control over the number of electronically coupled molecules. The PDIs are integrated within DNA chains using phosphoramidite coupling chemistry, allowing selection of the DNA sequence to either side, and specification of intermolecular DNA hybridization. In this way, we have developed a "toolbox" for construction of any stacking sequence of these semiconducting molecules. We have discovered that we need to use a full hierarchy of interactions: DNA guides the semiconductors into specified close proximity, hydrophobic-hydrophilic differentiation drives aggregation of the semiconductor moieties, and local geometry and electrostatic interactions define intermolecular positioning. As a result, the PDIs pack to give substantial intermolecular π wave function overlap, leading to an evolution of singlet excited states from localized excitons in the PDI monomer to excimers with wave functions delocalized over all five PDIs in the pentamer. This is accompanied by a change in the dominant triplet forming mechanism from localized spin-orbit charge transfer mediated intersystem crossing for the monomer toward a delocalized excimer process for the pentamer. Our modular DNA-based assembly reveals real opportunities for the rapid development of bespoke semiconductor architectures with molecule-by-molecule precision.

Project description:In this contribution we demonstrate a solid-state approach to triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion for application in a solar cell device in which absorption of near-infrared light is followed by direct electron injection into an inorganic substrate. We use time-resolved microwave photoconductivity experiments to study the injection of electrons into the electron-accepting substrate (TiO2) in a trilayer device consisting of a triplet sensitizer (fluorinated zinc phthalocyanine), triplet acceptor (methyl subsituted perylenediimide), and smooth polycrystalline TiO2. Absorption of light at 700 nm leads to the almost quantitative generation of triplet excited states by intersystem crossing. This is followed by Dexter energy transfer to the triplet acceptor layer where triplet annihilation occurs and concludes by injection of an electron into TiO2 from the upconverted singlet excited state.

Project description:Here we report the first example of an isolable, ambient stable perylene bisimide (PBI) dianion which was synthesized by catalytic reduction of a highly electron deficient PBI derivative. The remarkable stability of this unprecedented dianion in air for months facilitated its complete characterization by different methods, including single crystal X-ray analysis. Furthermore, solvent dependent cyclic and square wave voltammetry studies revealed that the formation of PBI dianions is preferred in more polar solvents, whereas the generation of PBI radical anions should be favoured in less polar solvents.

Project description:Double reduction of the THF adduct of 9H-9-borafluorene (1⋅THF) with excess alkali metal affords the dianion salts M2 [1] in essentially quantitative yields (M=Li-K). Even though the added charge is stabilized through π delocalization, [1]2- acts as a formal boron nucleophile toward organoboron (1⋅THF) and tetrel halide electrophiles (MeCl, Et3 SiCl, Me3 SnCl) to form B-B/C/Si/Sn bonds. The substrate dependence of open-shell versus closed-shell pathways has been investigated.
