The link between attitudes toward probationers and job burnout in Turkish probation officers.

ABSTRACT: The goal of the current study was to investigate individual-level factors associated with job burnout among probation officers (POs) and, specifically, to examine if attitudes toward probationers were linked with job burnout in the context of the recently established probation system in Turkey. Participants (N = 115) were recruited from a probation office in Istanbul. Job burnout was assessed via three components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and professional accomplishment. Results of structural equation modeling indicated that more favorable attitudes toward probationers were related to a lower sense of depersonalization and higher experience of professional accomplishment. However, POs' attitudes toward probationers were not associated with emotional exhaustion. Our findings are discussed in light of the present empirical literature on the contextual factors influential in job burnout. Practical implications for burnout prevention point to the potential effectiveness of working on attitudes among POs toward the people they supervise.

Project description:BackgroundIn adult correctional facilities, correctional officers (COs) are responsible for the safety and security of the facility in addition to aiding in offender rehabilitation and preventing recidivism. COs experience higher rates of job stress and burnout that stem from organizational stressors, leading to negative outcomes for not only the CO but the organization as well. Effective interventions could aim at targeting organizational stressors in order to reduce these negative outcomes as well as COs' job stress and burnout. This paper fills a gap in the organizational stress literature among COs by systematically reviewing the relationship between organizational stressors and CO stress and burnout in adult correctional facilities. In doing so, the present review identifies areas that organizational interventions can target in order to reduce CO job stress and burnout.MethodsA systematic search of the literature was conducted using Medline, PsycINFO, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and Sociological Abstracts. All retrieved articles were independently screened based on criteria developed a priori. All included articles underwent quality assessment. Organizational stressors were categorized according to Cooper and Marshall's (1976) model of job stress.ResultsThe systematic review yielded 8 studies that met all inclusion and quality assessment criteria. The five categories of organizational stressors among correctional officers are: stressors intrinsic to the job, role in the organization, rewards at work, supervisory relationships at work and the organizational structure and climate. The organizational structure and climate was demonstrated to have the most consistent relationship with CO job stress and burnout.ConclusionsThe results of this review indicate that the organizational structure and climate of correctional institutions has the most consistent relationship with COs' job stress and burnout. Limitations of the studies reviewed include the cross-sectional design and the use of varying measures for organizational stressors. The results of this review indicate that interventions should aim to improve the organizational structure and climate of the correctional facility by improving communication between management and COs.

Project description:BackgroundWith the rapid spread of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China, police officers were undergoing higher job stress, which made them physically and mentally exhausted, eventually leading to job burnout. The research aims to explore the mediating role of social support, psychological resilience, and sleep quality in the relationship between perceived stress and burnout.MethodsData collection was based on multistage cluster random sampling of police in Wuhan, China, from June 2021 to October 2022. A self-administered questionnaire was adopted. Perceived stress, social support, resilience, sleep quality and job burnout were measured using international standard scales. Spearman correlation analysis was utilized to explore the correlation between various psychological conditions and job burnout. Cronbach's α coefficient methods and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were applied to check the scales' reliability and discriminant validity. The structural equation model (SEM) was performed to adjust the model fitting.Results2125 eligible participants were included. The job burnout score was 1.90, and 8.52% showed severe burnout. The Cronbach's α coefficients of the above scales were all ≥ 0.8. The goodness of fit test for the first-order and second-order models reached all fit indices standards in CFA. Police's burnout and its dimensions were correlated with sleep quality, perceived stress, and social support, except between burnout, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and resilience. Parallel multiple mediations showed that social support, sleep quality, and resilience mediated the relationships between perceived stress and job burnout. The mediating effect of the three factors accounted for 6.72%, 55.39%, and - 7.14% of the total effect, respectively.ConclusionsPerceived stress affects burnout through mediating variables such as social support, sleep quality, and resilience. The mediating effect of sleep quality is the most potent.
