Harnessing Molecular Fluorophores in the Carbon Dots Matrix: The Case of Safranin O.

ABSTRACT: The origin of fluorescence in carbon dots (C-dots) is still a puzzling phenomenon. The emission is, in most of the cases, due to molecular fluorophores formed in situ during the synthesis. The carbonization during C-dots processing does not allow, however, a fine control of the properties and makes finding the source of the fluorescence a challenging task. In this work, we present a strategy to embed a pre-formed fluorescent molecule, safranin O dye, into an amorphous carbonaceous dot obtained by citric acid carbonization. The dye is introduced in the melted solution of citric acid and after pyrolysis remains incorporated in a carbonaceous matrix to form red-emitting C-dots that are strongly resistant to photobleaching. Embedding dyes in amorphous C-dots represents an alternative method to optimize the emission in the whole visible spectrum.

Reversible Aggregation of Molecular-Like Fluorophores Driven by Extreme pH in Carbon Dots.

Project description:The origin of carbon-dots (C-dots) fluorescence and its correlation with the dots structure still lack a comprehensive model. In particular, the core-shell model does not always fit with the experimental results, which, in some cases, suggest a molecular origin of the fluorescence. To gain a better insight, we have studied the response of molecular-like fluorophores contained in the C-dots at extreme pH conditions. Citric acid and urea have been employed to synthesize blue and green-emitting C-dots. They show a different emission as a function of the pH of the dispersing media. The photoluminescence has been attributed to molecular-like fluorophores: citrazinic acid and 4-hydroxy-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyridine-1,3,6-(2H,5H)-trione. 3D and time-resolved photoluminescence, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering have been used to determine the aggregation state, quantum yield and emission properties of the C-dots. The dependence of the C-dots blue and green components on the chemical environment indicates that the origin of fluorescence is due to molecular-like fluorophores.

Graphitic Dots Combining Photophysical Characteristics of Organic Molecular Fluorophores and Inorganic Quantum Dots.

Project description:Thanks to their photophysical properties, both organic molecular fluorophores (MFs) and inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are extensively used for bioimaging applications. However, limitations such as photobleaching for the former or blinking, size, and toxicity for the latter still constitute a challenge for numerous applications. We report here that embedding MFs in graphitic carbon dots (GDs) results in fluorophores which entirely tackle this challenge. Characterized by ultranarrow, bright, and excitation-independent emission devoid of blinking and photobleaching, these hybrid-featured nanoparticles also demonstrate their unique photophysical performances at the single-nanoparticle scale, making them appealing candidates for bioimaging applications.

Epigenetic characterization of carbon dots functions in rice

Project description:Nanoparticles (NPs) can serve as efficient carriers for delivery of genetic materials in plants. They can regulate normal growth and development, and responses to stresses in plants. However, epigenetic mechanisms underlying NPs or carbon dots (CDs) affecting plant growth and development are still largely unknown. Here we showed that CDs reprogrammed gene transcription associated with some biological processes such as stress responses and photosynthesis. Moreover, CDs resulted in subtle but significant DNA hypermethylation, especially for CHG and CHH hypermethylation, which is possibly caused by CDs induced up-regulation of OsCMTs. Interestingly, we found that CDs stabilized i-motif in the promoter regions of OsCMTs1/2, therefore resulting in CHG and CHH hypermethylation. Thus, our study for the first time reveals possible mechanisms underlying impacts of CDs on cytosine context-dependent DNA methylation on a genome-wide scale, which may regulate genes responsible for CDs-induced phenotypic changes in plants. It will be helpful for considering future application of CDs in improving crop agronomic traits.

Mechanical Force-Induced Color-Variable Luminescence of Carbon Dots in Boric Acid Matrix.

Project description:Mechano-luminescent materials that exhibit distinct luminescence responses to force stimuli are urgently anticipated in view of application needs in the fields of sensing, anti-counterfeiting, optoelectronic devices, etc. However, most of the reported materials normally exhibit force-induced changes in luminescent intensity, whereas materials that possess force-induced color-variable luminescence remain rarely reported. Herein, for the first time, a novel mechanical force-induced color-variable luminescence material from carbon dots (CDs) in boric acid (CD@BA) is reported. At low CDs concentration, the luminescence of CD@BA exhibits a grinding-induced color variable from white to blue. This grinding-induced color variable can be switched to yellow-to-white changing by increasing the CDs concentration in BA. The grinding-induced color-variable luminescence originates from dynamic variation in emission ratio of fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence, due to the influence of oxygen and water vapor in the air. At high CDs concentration, short-wavelength fluorescence undergoes more severe reabsorption compared to room temperature phosphorescence, leading to grinding-induced color-variable switching from white-to-blue to yellow-to-white. Based on the unique properties of CD@BA powder, the applications of recognizing and visualizing fingerprints on the surfaces of various of materials are demonstrated.

Multicolor polymeric carbon dots: synthesis, separation and polyamide-supported molecular fluorescence.

Project description:Multicolor carbon dots (CDs) have been developed recently and demonstrate great potential in bio-imaging, sensing, and LEDs. However, the fluorescence mechanism of their tunable colors is still under debate, and efficient separation methods are still challenging. Herein, we synthesized multicolor polymeric CDs through solvothermal treatment of citric acid and urea in formamide. Automated reversed-phase column separation was used to achieve fractions with distinct colors, including blue, cyan, green, yellow, orange and red. This work explores the physicochemical properties and fluorescence origins of the red, green, and blue fractions in depth with combined experimental and computational methods. Three dominant fluorescence mechanism hypotheses were evaluated by comparing time-dependent density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculation results to measured characteristics. We find that blue fluorescence likely comes from embedded small molecules trapped in carbonaceous cages, while pyrene analogs are the most likely origin for emission at other wavelengths, especially in the red. Also important, upon interaction with live cells, different CD color fractions are trafficked to different sub-cellular locations. Super-resolution imaging shows that the blue CDs were found in a variety of organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosomes, while the red CDs were primarily localized in lysosomes. These findings significantly advance our understanding of the photoluminescence mechanism of multicolor CDs and help to guide future design and applications of these promising nanomaterials.

Affinity of carbon quantum dots anchored within metal organic framework matrix as enhancer of plant nourishment.

Project description:Nano-fertilizers were ascribed to be significantly advantageous with minimizing the negative effects of requiring excessive contents in the soil and reducing the number of times for fertilization. Herein, the superior affinity of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) anchored within metal organic framework (Cu-BTC) matrix was investigated for the first time as a fertilizer for sunflower. CQDs were nucleated from alkali-hydrolyzed carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) via the hydrothermal technique. The synthesized CQDs (6.8 ± 3.7 nm) were anchored within Cu-BTC (crystalline rod-like structure) matrix, to produce CQDs@Cu-BTC composite. The obtained CQDs and CQDs@Cu-BTC were applied as nutrients for the sunflower plant. The chlorophyll a and carotenoids contents were 0.465 & 0.497 and 0.350 & 0.364 mg/g after treatment with CQDs & CQDs@Cu-BTC, respectively. The shoot length of sunflower sample was increased after feeding with CQDs and CQDs@Cu-BTC to be 38.7 and 46.5 cm, respectively. The obtained results confirmed that, the synthesized CQDs@Cu-BTC showed superiority as nutrient material via enhancing the growth and physiological properties of sunflower and consequently could be used as fertilizer for plants instead of the commercial nutrient.

Harnessing fluorescent carbon quantum dots from natural resource for advancing sweat latent fingerprint recognition with machine learning algorithms for enhanced human identification.

Project description:Nowadays, it is fascinating to engineer waste biomass into functional valuable nanomaterials. We investigate the production of hetero-atom doped carbon quantum dots (N-S@MCDs) to address the adaptability constraint in green precursors concerning the contents of the green precursors i.e., Tagetes erecta (marigold extract). The successful formation of N-S@MCDs as described has been validated by distinct analytical characterizations. As synthesized N-S@MCDs successfully incorporated on corn-starch powder, providing a nano-carbogenic fingerprint powder composition (N-S@MCDs/corn-starch phosphors). N-S@MCDs imparts astounding color-tunability which enables highly fluorescent fingerprint pattern developed on different non-porous surfaces along with immediate visual enhancement under UV-light, revealing a bright sharp fingerprint, along with long-time preservation of developed fingerprints. The creation and comparison of latent fingerprints (LFPs) are two key research in the recognition and detection of LFPs, respectively. In this work, developed fingerprints are regulated with an artificial intelligence program. The optimum sample has a very high degree of similarity with the standard control, as shown by the program's good matching score (86.94%) for the optimal sample. Hence, our results far outperform the benchmark attained using the conventional method, making the N-S@MCDs/corn-starch phosphors and the digital processing program suitable for use in real-world scenarios.

Room-temperature Magnetism in Carbon Dots and Enhanced Ferromagnetism in Carbon Dots-Polyaniline Nanocomposite.

Project description:Room temperature magnetic ordering is reported for very small carbon dots (CDs), mat-like polyaniline nanofibers (Mat-PANI) and a composite of CDs@Mat-PANI containing 0.315?wt% CDs. We have found saturation magnetization (M S ) of CDs, Mat-PANI and CDs@Mat-PANI at 5 (20/300) K equals to 0.0079 (0.0048/0.0019), 0.0116 (0.0065/0.0055) and 0.0349 (0.0085/0.0077) emu/g, respectively. The M S enhancement in CDs@Mat-PANI (200% and 40% at 5?K and 300?K, respectively) is attributed to electron transfer from Mat-PANI imine N-atoms to the encapsulated CDs. Changes in M S values reveal that 0.81 (0.08) electron/CD is transferred at 5 (300) K, which is supported by observation of CDs photoluminescence (PL) redshift while in CDs@Mat-PANI. Band-bending and bandgap-renormalization calculations are used to predict a redshift of 117?meV at 300?K as a result of the electron transfer, in excellent agreement with the PL data (110?meV). Raman, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data are used to confirm the electron transfer process as well as the strong interaction of CDs with PANI within CDs@Mat-PANI, which increases the crystalline domain size of Mat-PANI from about 4.8?nm to 9.2?nm while reducing the tensile strain from about 6.2% to 1.8%.

Reversible Photoswitching of Carbon Dots.

Project description:We present a method of reversible photoswitching in carbon nanodots with red emission. A mechanism of electron transfer is proposed. The cationic dark state, formed by the exposure of red light, is revived back to the bright state with the very short exposure of blue light. Additionally, the natural on-off state of carbon dot fluorescence was tuned using an electron acceptor molecule. Our observation can make the carbon dots as an excellent candidate for the super-resolution imaging of nanoscale biomolecules within the cell.

High Methoxyl Pectin and Sodium Caseinate Film Matrix Reinforced with Green Carbon Quantum Dots: Rheological and Mechanical Studies.

Project description:Nowadays, proteins and polysaccharides play a fundamental role in the manufacturing of biocompatible materials applied in food packaging. The resulting films have, however, limits associated with the resistance to mechanical stress; therefore, it is important to reinforce the initial mixture with additives that promote the development of stronger molecular links. Carbon dots (CDs) are excellent candidates for this purpose due to the presence of surface functional groups that determine the formation of numerous intramolecular bonds between the charged biopolymers. The present research aims to evaluate the effect of CDs on the mechanical properties of biopolymer films obtained from sodium caseinate (CAS), high methoxyl pectin (HMP) and glycerol used as plasticizers. Green carbon dots (gCDs) were obtained from natural organic sources by green synthesis. The effects of gCDs on the flow behavior and viscoelastic properties of mixed biopolymer dispersions and the thermophysical properties of the corresponded films were evaluated by steady and unsteady shear rheological measurements and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests, respectively. The dynamic mechanical measurements were realized taking into account the parameters of temperature and relative humidity. The results indicate a significant change in the viscosity of the protein-polysaccharide dispersions and the thermomechanical properties of the corresponding film samples reinforced with higher amounts of gCDs.
