Project description:Heterogeneous single-atom catalyst (SAC) opens a unique entry to establishing structure-performance relationship at the molecular level similar to that in homogeneous catalysis. The challenge lies in manipulating the coordination chemistry of single atoms without changing single-atom dispersion. Here, we develop an efficient synthetic method for SACs by using ethanediamine to chelate Pt cations and then removing the ethanediamine by a rapid thermal treatment (RTT) in inert atmosphere. The coordination chemistry of Pt single atoms on a Fe2O3 support is finely tuned by merely adjusting the RTT temperature. With the decrease in Pt-O coordination number, the oxidation state of Pt decreases, and consequently the hydrogenation activity increases to a record level without loss of chemoselectivity. The tunability of the local coordination chemistry, oxidation states of the metal, and the catalytic performance of single atoms reveals the unique role of SACs as a bridge between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Project description:We fabricated one fibrous-membrane type of flexible and lightweight supported catalyst via loading platinum-nickel nanoparticles (PtNi NPs) directly on the polydopamine-coated polymethylmethacrylate electrospun-fibers (PMMA@PDA). The polymer support with the PDA layer provided numerous active sites, leading to well-monodispersed and sized PtNi NPs on the nanofibers. Through the rational design of PtNi NPs, the resultant catalyst system exhibited 90% conversion for decomposing HCHO (10 ppm) at room temperature with only a low dosage (0.02 g), retaining the high activity for 100 hours. This superior catalytic performance stems from the formate oxidation, which was the key intermediate during HCHO decomposition, and was promoted by the existence of a sufficient Pt-OH-Ni interface in the PtNi NPs with an appropriate Pt/Ni ratio of 1:5. Such tailored Pt-based nanoparticles ideally work together with the polymer nanofibers as a support for catalytic reaction. Compared with classical catalysts, our system can handle a comparable efficiency with much lower air resistance and remarkably lower dosage. Furthermore, the membrane-like morphology provides easy handling and minimizes the leaching of catalyst nanoparticles.

Project description:Single-atom catalysts have been widely investigated for several electrocatalytic reactions except electrochemical alcohol oxidation. Herein, we synthesize atomically dispersed platinum on ruthenium oxide (Pt1/RuO2) using a simple impregnation-adsorption method. We find that Pt1/RuO2 has good electrocatalytic activity towards methanol oxidation in an alkaline media with a mass activity that is 15.3-times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (6766 vs. 441 mA mg‒1Pt). In contrast, single atom Pt on carbon black is inert. Further, the mass activity of Pt1/RuO2 is superior to that of most Pt-based catalysts previously developed. Moreover, Pt1/RuO2 has a high tolerance towards CO poisoning, resulting in excellent catalytic stability. Ab initio simulations and experiments reveal that the presence of Pt‒O3f (3-fold coordinatively bonded O)‒Rucus (coordinatively unsaturated Ru) bonds with the undercoordinated bridging O in Pt1/RuO2 favors the electrochemical dehydrogenation of methanol with lower energy barriers and onset potential than those encountered for Pt‒C and Pt‒Ru.

Project description:Bifunctional catalysts with tandem processes have achieved great success in a wide range of important catalytic processes, however, this concept has hardly been applied in the elimination of volatile organic compounds. Herein, we designed a tandem bifunctional Zeolites-Silver catalyst that enormously boosted formaldehyde oxidation at low temperatures, and formaldehyde conversion increased by 50 times (100% versus 2%) at 70 °C compared to that of monofunctional supported silver catalyst. This is enabled by designing a bifunctional catalyst composed of acidic ZSM-5 zeolite and silver component, which provides two types of active sites with complementary functions. Detached acidic ZSM-5 activates formaldehyde to generate gaseous intermediates of methyl formate, which is more easily oxidized by subsequent silver component. We anticipate that the findings here will open up a new avenue for the development of formaldehyde oxidation technologies, and also provide guidance for designing efficient catalysts in a series of oxidation reactions.

Project description:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted tremendous research interests in various energy-related fields because of their high activity, selectivity and 100% atom utilization. However, it is still a challenge to enhance the intrinsic and specific activity of SACs. Herein, we present an approach to fabricate a high surface distribution density of iridium (Ir) SAC on nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet arrays substrate (Ir1/NFS), which delivers a high water oxidation activity. The Ir1/NFS catalyst offers a low overpotential of ~170 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of 9.85 s-1 at an overpotential of 300 mV in 1.0 M KOH solution. At the same time, the Ir1/NFS catalyst exhibits a high stability performance, reaching a lifespan up to 350 hours at a current density of 100 mA cm-2. First-principles calculations reveal that the electronic structures of Ir atoms are significantly regulated by the sulfide substrate, endowing an energetically favorable reaction pathway. This work represents a promising strategy to fabricate high surface distribution density single-atom catalysts with high activity and durability for electrochemical water splitting.

Project description:Room temperature catalytic oxidation by noble metals is considered to be the most promising strategy for the removal of HCHO, which is one of the major indoor air pollutants. Hierarchically macro-mesoporous structured Pt/?-Al2O3 hollow spheres with open and accessible pores were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidative decomposition of HCHO at room temperature. The prepared composite hollow spheres showed higher catalytic activity than the conventional nanoparticle supports, which is mainly due to their hierarchical macro-mesoporous structure facilitating diffusion of reactants and products, and the high dispersion of accessible catalytic Pt nanoparticles. This work may contribute to the development of hierarchically structured materials and high-performance catalysts for indoor air purification and related catalytic processes.

Project description:This study presents a TiO2/C hybrid material with biomimetic channels fabricated using a wood template. Repeated impregnations of pretreated wood chips in a Ti precursor were conducted, followed by calcination at 400-600 °C for 4 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The generated TiO2 nanocrystals were homogenously distributed inside a porous carbon framework. With an extremely low Pt catalyst loading (0.04-0.1 wt%), the obtained porous catalyst could effectively oxidize formaldehyde to CO2 and H2O even under room temperature (conv. ∼100%). Wood acted as both a structural template and reduction agent for Pt catalyst generation in sintering. Therefore, no post H2 reduction treatment for catalyst activation was required. The hierarchal channel structures, including 2-10 nm mesopores and 20 μm diameter channels, could be controlled by calcination temperature and atmosphere, which was confirmed by SEM and BET characterizations. Based on the abundant availability of wood templates and reduced cost for low Pt loading, this preparation method shows great potential for large-scale applications.

Project description:Diminishing fossil fuel resources and calls for sustainability are driving the urgent need for efficient valorization of renewable resources with high atom efficiency. Inspired from the natural goethite mineral with Mn paragenesis, we develop cost-effective MnO2/goethite catalysts for the efficient valorization of dihydroxyacetone, an important biomass-based platform molecule, into value-added glycolic acid and formic acid with 83.2% and 93.4% yields. The DHA substrates first undergo C-C cleavage to selectively form glycolic acid and hydroxymethyl (·CH2OH) radicals, which are further oxidized into formic acid. The kinetic and isotopic labeling experiments reveal that the catalase-like activity of MnO2 turns the oxidative radicals into oxygen, which then switches towards a hydroxymethyl peroxide (HMOO) pathway for formic acid generation and prevents formic acid over-oxidation. This nature-inspired catalyst design not only significantly improves the carbon efficiency to 86.6%, but also enhances the oxygen atom utilization efficiency from 11.2% to 46.6%, indicating a promising biomass valorization process.

Project description:The efficiency of the synthesis of renewable fuels and feedstocks from electrical sources is limited, at present, by the sluggish water oxidation reaction. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with a controllable coordination environment and exceptional atom utilization efficiency open new paradigms toward designing high-performance water oxidation catalysts. Here, using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements with calculations of spectra and electrochemical activity, we demonstrate that the origin of water oxidation activity of IrNiFe SACs is the presence of highly oxidized Ir single atom (Ir5.3+) in the NiFe oxyhydroxide under operating conditions. We show that the optimal water oxidation catalyst could be achieved by systematically increasing the oxidation state and modulating the coordination environment of the Ir active sites anchored atop the NiFe oxyhydroxide layers. Based on the proposed mechanism, we have successfully anchored Ir single-atom sites on NiFe oxyhydroxides (Ir0.1/Ni9Fe SAC) via a unique in situ cryogenic-photochemical reduction method that delivers an overpotential of 183 mV at 10 mA ⋅ cm-2 and retains its performance following 100 h of operation in 1 M KOH electrolyte, outperforming the reported catalysts and the commercial IrO2 catalysts. These findings open the avenue toward an atomic-level understanding of the oxygen evolution of catalytic centers under in operando conditions.
