Project description:This study presents a TiO2/C hybrid material with biomimetic channels fabricated using a wood template. Repeated impregnations of pretreated wood chips in a Ti precursor were conducted, followed by calcination at 400-600 °C for 4 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The generated TiO2 nanocrystals were homogenously distributed inside a porous carbon framework. With an extremely low Pt catalyst loading (0.04-0.1 wt%), the obtained porous catalyst could effectively oxidize formaldehyde to CO2 and H2O even under room temperature (conv. ∼100%). Wood acted as both a structural template and reduction agent for Pt catalyst generation in sintering. Therefore, no post H2 reduction treatment for catalyst activation was required. The hierarchal channel structures, including 2-10 nm mesopores and 20 μm diameter channels, could be controlled by calcination temperature and atmosphere, which was confirmed by SEM and BET characterizations. Based on the abundant availability of wood templates and reduced cost for low Pt loading, this preparation method shows great potential for large-scale applications.

Project description:The development of highly efficient catalysts for room-temperature formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation is of great interest for indoor air purification. In this work, it was found that the single-atom Pt1/CeO2 catalyst exhibits a remarkable activity with complete removal of HCHO even at 288 K. Combining density functional theory calculations and in situ DRIFTS experiments, it was revealed that the active OlatticeH site generated on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+ via steam treatment plays a key role in the oxidation of HCHO to formate and its further oxidation to CO2. Such involvement of hydroxyls is fundamentally different from that of cofeeding water which dissociates on metal oxide and catalyzes the acid-base-related chemistry. This study provides an important implication for the design and synthesis of supported Pt catalysts with atom efficiency for a very important practical application-room-temperature HCHO oxidation.

Project description:Supported Pt-based catalysts have been identified as highly selective catalysts for CO oxidation, but their potential for applications has been hampered by the high cost and scarcity of Pt metals as well as aggregation problems at relatively high temperatures. In this work, nanorod structured (TiO2-Pt)/CeO2 catalysts with the addition of 0.3 at% Pt and different atomic ratios of Ti were prepared through a combined dealloying and calcination method. XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and STEM measurements were used to confirm the phase composition, surface morphology, and structure of synthesized samples. After calcination treatment, Pt nanoparticles were semi-inlayed on the surface of the CeO2 nanorod, and TiO2 was highly dispersed into the catalyst system, resulting in the formation of (TiO2-Pt)/CeO2 with high specific surface area and large pore volume. The unique structure can provide more reaction path and active sites for catalytic CO oxidation, thus contributing to the generation of catalysts with high catalytic activity. The outstanding catalytic performance is ascribed to the stable structure and proper TiO2 doping as well as the combined effect of Pt, TiO2, and CeO2. The research results are of importance for further development of high catalytic performance nanoporous catalytic materials.

Project description:Herein, perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid-doped polyaniline (PTP) nanofibers with/without photoreactive anatase TiO2 (TiO2-PTP and PTP, respectively) have been successively synthesized and subsequently decorated by Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) to prepare Pt-PTP and Pt-TiO2-PTP composites. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirms the presence of ∼3 nm spherical-shaped Pt NPs on both the composites along with TiO2 on Pt-TiO2-PTP. Pt loading on the composites is deliberately kept similar to compare the methanol electro-oxidation in the two composites. The Pt nanocomposites along with the precursor polyanilines are characterized by optical characterization, X-ray diffraction study, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The ternary composite-modified (Pt-TiO2-PTP) electrode demonstrates high electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation reaction in acid medium than Pt-PTP and Pt-TiO2. The higher electrochemical surface area (1.7 times), high forward/backward current ratio, and the higher CO tolerance ability for Pt-TiO2-PTP make it a superior catalyst for methanol oxidation reaction in the electrochemical process than Pt-PTP. Moreover, the catalytic activity of Pt-TiO2-PTP is further enhanced significantly with light irradiation. The cooperative effects of photo- and electrocatalysis on methanol oxidation reaction in Pt-TiO2-PTP enhance the methanol oxidation catalytic activity approximately 1.3 times higher in light illumination than in dark. Therefore, the present work will be proficient to get a light-assisted sustainable approach for developing the methanol oxidation reaction activity of Pt NP-containing catalysts in direct methanol fuel cells.

Project description:Room temperature catalytic oxidation by noble metals is considered to be the most promising strategy for the removal of HCHO, which is one of the major indoor air pollutants. Hierarchically macro-mesoporous structured Pt/?-Al2O3 hollow spheres with open and accessible pores were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidative decomposition of HCHO at room temperature. The prepared composite hollow spheres showed higher catalytic activity than the conventional nanoparticle supports, which is mainly due to their hierarchical macro-mesoporous structure facilitating diffusion of reactants and products, and the high dispersion of accessible catalytic Pt nanoparticles. This work may contribute to the development of hierarchically structured materials and high-performance catalysts for indoor air purification and related catalytic processes.

Project description:The selective oxidation of biobutanol to prepare butyric acid is an important conversion process, but the preparation of low-temperature and efficient catalysts for butanol oxidation is currently a bottleneck problem. In this work, we prepared Pt-TiO2 catalysts with different Pt particle sizes using a simple one-step hydrothermal/solvothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the average size of the Pt particles ranged from 1.1 nm to 8.7 nm. Among them, Pt-TiO2 with an average particle size of 3.6 nm exhibited the best catalytic performance for biobutanol. It was capable of almost completely converting butanol, even at room temperature (30 °C), with a 98.9% biobutanol conversion, 98.4% butyric acid selectivity, and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 36 h-1. Increasing the reaction temperature to 80 and 90 °C, the corresponding TOFs increased rapidly to 355 and 619 h-1. The relationship between the electronic structure of Pt and its oxidative performance suggests that the synergistic effect of the dual sites, Pt0 and Pt2+, could be the primary factor contributing to its elevated reactivity.

Project description:A series of Zr-TiO2 catalysts were prepared using a facile sol-gel method and were used for N-methylmorpholine (NMM) oxidation to N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO). The structure features of Zr-TiO2 catalysts were studied in detail through a variety of characterization methods, such as XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, XPS, EPR, and O2-TPD. As-obtained 5%Zr-TiO2 catalysts had superior catalytic performance and stability with a 97.6% NMMO yield at 40 °C, which related to Zr doping, a higher surface area, more oxygen vacancies, and oxygen chemisorption on the catalytic surface. This work provides an efficient preparation strategy of TiO2-based catalysts for selective oxidation reactions by a facile method.

Project description:Sono-photo-catalysis (SPC) has been regarded as a promising route for hydrogen evolution from water splitting due to the sono-photo-synergism, whereas its current performance (∼μmol g-1 h-1) is yet far from expectation. Herein, we give the first demonstration that the intrinsically coupled thermal effects of light and ultrasound, which is normally underestimated or neglected, can simultaneously reshape the photo- and sono-catalytic activities for hydrogen evolution and establish a higher degree of synergy between light and ultrasound in SPC even on the traditional Pt-TiO2 catalyst. A high-efficient hydrogen evolution rate of 225.04 mmol g-1 h-1 with light-to‑hydrogen efficiency of 0.89% has been achieved in thermally-enhanced SPC, which is an order of magnitude higher than that without thermal effects. More impressively, the increase of synergy index up to 53% has been achieved. Through experiments and theoretical calculations, the thermally-enhanced sono-photo-synergism is attributed to the sono-photo-thermo-modulated structural optimization of defect-rich TiO2 support and deaggregated Pt species with functional complementary lattice facets, which optimizes not only the thermodynamic properties by enhancing light harvesting and the charge redox power, but also the kinetic properties by accelerating the net efficiency of charge separation and the whole processes of water splitting, including the dissociation of water molecules on high-index (200) Pt facets and production of H∗ intermediates on defect-rich TiO2-x support and low-index (111) Pt facets. This study exemplifies that coupling light- and ultrasonic-induced thermal effects in SPC system could enhance the synergy between light and ultrasound by modulating catalyst structure to achieve double optimization of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of SPC hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Pt nanoparticles are typically decorated as co-catalyst on semiconductors to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Due to the low abundance and high cost of Pt, reaching a high activity with minimized co-catalyst loadings is a key challenge in the field. We explore a dewetting-dealloying strategy to fabricate on TiO2 nanotubes nanoporous Pt nanoparticles, aiming at improving the co-catalyst mass activity for H2 generation. For this, we sputter first Pt-Ni bi-layers of controllable thickness (nm range) on highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays, and then induce dewetting-alloying of the Pt-Ni bi-layers by a suitable annealing step in a reducing atmosphere: the thermal treatment causes the Pt and Ni films to agglomerate and at the same time mix with each other, forming on the TiO2 nanotube surface metal islands of a mixed PtNi composition. In a subsequent step we perform chemical dealloying of Ni that is selectively etched out from the bimetallic dewetted islands, leaving behind nanoporous Pt decorations. Under optimized conditions, the nanoporous Pt-decorated TiO2 structures show a>6 times higher photocatalytic H2 generation activity compared to structures modified with a comparable loading of dewetted, non-porous Pt. We ascribe this beneficial effect to the nanoporous nature of the dealloyed Pt co-catalyst, which provides an increased surface-to-volume ratio and thus a more efficient electron transfer and a higher density of active sites at the co-catalyst surface for H2 evolution.
