Project description:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE n ) have a high cetane number and a high oxygen content, which can effectively reduce the soot emission. In this study, PODE3, methane, and hydrogen were used as the characterization fuel. First, the detailed reaction mechanism of PODE3 and GRI-Mech 3.0 was reduced under engine-relevant conditions by using the reduced methods of the direct relation graph, the directed relation graph with error propagation, the sensitivity analysis, and the reaction pathway analysis. Then, the simplified PODE3 and methane-hydrogen mechanism were coupled and optimized. Finally, the simplified chemical kinetics mechanism of methane-hydrogen-PODE3 (67 species, 260 reactions) was developed. After that, the methane-hydrogen-PODE3 mechanism for methane/hydrogen/PODE3 blend combustion was established, and experimental verification was performed against ignition delay times, laminar flame speeds, and premixed flame species profiles, which showed a good agreement between the predicted and experimental data. Finally, the current mechanism was found to have high reliability and can be coupled to computational fluid dynamics.

Project description:The methane storage behavior in nanoporous material is significantly different from that of a bulk phase, and has a fundamental role in methane extraction from shale and its storage for vehicular applications. Here we show that the behavior and mechanisms of the methane storage are mainly dominated by the ratio of the interaction between methane molecules and nanopores walls to the methane intermolecular interaction, and a geometric constraint. By linking the macroscopic properties of the methane storage to the microscopic properties of a system of methane molecules-nanopores walls, we develop an equation of state for methane at supercritical temperature over a wide range of pressures. Molecular dynamic simulation data demonstrates that this equation is able to relate very well the methane storage behavior with each of the key physical parameters, including a pore size and shape and wall chemistry and roughness. Moreover, this equation only requires one fitted parameter, and is simple, reliable and powerful in application.

Project description:Competition plays an important role in shaping species' spatial distributions. However, it remains unclear where and how competition regulates species' range limits. In a field experiment with plants originating from low and high elevations and conducted across an elevation gradient in the Swiss Alps, we find that both lowland and highland species can better persist in the presence of competition within, rather than beyond, their elevation ranges. These findings suggest that competition helps set both lower and upper elevation range limits of these species. Furthermore, the reduced ability of pairs of lowland or highland species to coexist beyond their range edges is mainly driven by diminishing niche differences; changes in both niche differences and relative fitness differences drive weakening competitive dominance of lowland over highland species with increasing elevation. These results highlight the need to account for competitive interactions and investigate underlying coexistence mechanisms to understand current and future species distributions.

Project description:In this study, the structural properties of soot produced in diffusion flames are analyzed to elucidate the formation of mature aggregates from large young particles. Soot samples are generated in a laminar diffusion inverted gravity flame reactor (IGFR) operated on methane, ethane, and ethylene with Ar dilution to reduce the flame temperature. Soot produced in temperature ranges from 1495K-1568 K contains 100nm-300nm particles with (i) isotropic or (ii) multiple core structures, supporting a soot maturation pathway where one young soot particle evolves into a mature fractal aggregate via an internal nucleation route. During the process, these large amorphous particles can form internal voids as the particle loses mass due to pyrolysis or oxidation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that young soot aggregates contain a higher fraction of shorter fringes and highly curved aromatics (11% vs. 23%), which is in agreement with their higher organic carbon content (3.3%-5.4% vs. 12.1%-28.8% wt.). Increasing the flame temperature reduces the curvature of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and allows for more efficient layer stacking as indicated by a higher percent of stacked fringes. For these gaseous fuels, carbonization appears to be primarily a function of the flame temperature and independent of the fuel composition.

Project description:This paper examines the benefits of Michaelis-Menten model reduction techniques in stochastic tau-leaping simulations. Results show that although the conditions for the validity of the reductions for tau-leaping remain the same as those for the stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA), the reductions result in a substantial speed-up for tau-leaping under a different range of conditions than they do for SSA. The reason of this discrepancy is that the time steps for SSA and for tau-leaping are determined by different properties of system dynamics.

Project description:Methanol, the simplest alcohol, and dimethyl ether, the simplest ether, are central compounds in the search for alternative "green" combustion fuels. In fact, they are generally considered as the cornerstones of the envisaged "Methanol Economy" scenario, as they are able to efficiently produce energy in an environmentally friendly manner. However, despite a massive amount of research in this field, the synthesis of dimethyl ether from liquid methanol has never so far been reported. Here we present a computational study, based on ab initio Molecular Dynamics, which suggests a novel synthesis route to methanol dehydration - leading thus to the dimethyl ether synthesis - through the application of strong electric fields. Besides proving the impressive catalytic effects afforded by the field, our calculations indicate that the obtained dimethyl ether is stable and that it can be progressively accumulated thanks to the peculiar chemical pathways characterising the methanol reaction network under electric field. These results suggest that the experimental synthesis of dimethyl ether from liquid methanol could be achieved, possibly in the proximity of field emitter tips.

Project description:The title compound (systematic name3,7-dihy-droxy-9-meth-oxy-1-methyl-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one dimethyl sulfoxide monosolvate), C15H12O5·C2H6OS, was isolated from an unidentified endophytic fungus (belonging to class Ascomycetes) of Taxus sp. In the crystal, both the alternariol 9-O-methyl ether (AME) and the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mol-ecules exhibit crystallographic mirror symmetry. One of the hy-droxy groups makes bifurcated hydrogen bonds, viz. an intra-molecular bond with the carbonyl group and an inter-molecular bond with the carbonyl group in an inversion-related AME mol-ecule. In the crystal, the AME mol-ecules are organized into stacks parallel with the b axis by π-π inter-actions between centrosymmetrically related mol-ecules [the distance between the centroid of the central ring and the centroid of the meth-oxy-substituted benzene ring in the next mol-ecule of the stack is 3.6184 (5) Å]. Pairs of DMSO mol-ecules, linked via centrosymmetric C-H⋯O contacts, are inserted into the voids created by the AME mol-ecules, making O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O contacts with the hosts.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated to be readily activated by treatment with the low surface tension, low boiling point solvent dimethyl ether (DME). The mildness of the method enables access to high surface areas by avoiding structural changes in the framework that often plague thermal activation methods. A distinction from previous methods is that DME activation succeeds for materials with coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) and non-CUS MOFs as well. DME displaces solvent molecules occupying the pores of the MOF as well as those coordinated to metal centers; reducing evacuation temperature by using a coordinating, yet highly volatile guest enables low temperature activation with structural retention as demonstrated surface area measurements that match or exceed existing activation protocols.

Project description:Acoustically modulated methane jet diffusion flames were used to enhance carbon nanostructure synthesis. A catalytic nickel substrate was employed to collect the deposit materials at sampling position z = 10 mm above the burner exit. The fabrication of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was significantly enhanced by acoustic excitation at frequencies near the natural flickering frequency (ƒ = 20 Hz) and near the acoustically resonant frequency (ƒ = 90 Hz), respectively. At these characteristic frequencies, flow mixing was markedly enhanced by acoustic excitation, and a flame structure with a bright slender core flame was generated, which provided a favorable flame environment for the growth of carbon nanomaterials. The production rate of CNOs was high at 20 Hz (near the natural flickering frequency), at which the gas temperature was about 680 °C. Additionally, a quantity of CNTs was obtained at 70-95 Hz, near the acoustically resonant frequency, at which the gas temperature was between 665 and 830 °C. However, no carbon nanomaterials were synthesized at other frequencies. The enhanced synthesis of CNOs and CNTs is attributed to the strong mixing of the fuel and oxidizer due to the acoustic excitation at resonant frequencies.

Project description:Structural superlubricity (SSL) is a state of contact with no wear and ultralow friction. SSL has been characterized at contact with van der Waals (vdW) layered materials, while its stability under extreme loading conditions has not been assessed. By designing both self-mated and non-self-mated vdW contacts with materials chosen for their high strengths, we report outstanding robustness of SSL under very high pressures in experiments. The incommensurate self-mated vdW contact between graphite interfaces can maintain the state of SSL under a pressure no lower than 9.45 GPa, and the non-self-mated vdW contact between a tungsten tip and graphite substrate remains stable up to 3.74 GPa. Beyond this critical pressure, wear is activated, signaling the breakdown of vdW contacts and SSL. This unexpectedly strong pressure-resistance and wear-free feature of SSL breaks down the picture of progressive wear. Atomistic simulations show that lattice destruction at the vdW contact by pressure-assisted bonding triggers wear through shear-induced tearing of the single-atomic layers. The correlation between the breakdown pressure and material properties shows that the bulk modulus and the first ionization energy are the most relevant factors, indicating the combined structural and electronic effects. Impressively, the breakdown pressures defined by the SSL interface could even exceed the strength of materials in contact, demonstrating the robustness of SSL. These findings offer a fundamental understanding of wear at the vdW contacts and guide the design of SSL-enabled applications.
