Project description:Wound infection and excessive exudate can affect the process of wound healing. However, the disadvantage of the anti-microbial wound dressings is that the biological fluids are ineffectively removed. Inspired by making "Chinese Jianbing", a composite wound nano-dressing was developed consisting of a hydrophilic outer layer (chitosan&polyvinyl alcohol: CTS-PVA) and a hydrophobic inner layer (propolis&polycaprolactone: PRO-PCL) by combining casting and electrospinning methods for effective antibacterial and unidirectional removing excess biofluids. In vitro, the composite wound nano-dressing of PRO-PCL and CTS-PVA (PPCP) could strongly inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, PPCP wound dressing had excellent antioxidant properties and blood coagulation index for effective hemostatic. Importantly, it had a preferable water absorption for removing excess biofluid. In vivo, it had anti-inflammatory properties and promoted collagen Ⅰ preparation, which realized 80% wound healing on day 7. In short, the PPCP wound dressing provides a new direction and option for antibacterial and removes excess biofluid.

Project description:A radiative vapor condenser sheds heat in the form of infrared radiation and cools itself to below the ambient air temperature to produce liquid water from vapor. This effect has been known for centuries, and is exploited by some insects to survive in dry deserts. Humans have also been using radiative condensation for dew collection. However, all existing radiative vapor condensers must operate during the nighttime. Here, we develop daytime radiative condensers that continue to operate 24 h a day. These daytime radiative condensers can produce water from vapor under direct sunlight, without active consumption of energy. Combined with traditional passive cooling via convection and conduction, radiative cooling can substantially increase the performance of passive vapor condensation, which can be used for passive water extraction and purification technologies.

Project description:Daytime radiative cooling (DRC) materials offer a sustainable approach to thermal management by exploiting net positive heat transfer to deep space. While such materials typically have a white or mirror-like appearance to maximize solar reflection, extending the palette of available colors is required to promote their real-world utilization. However, the incorporation of conventional absorption-based colorants inevitably leads to solar heating, which counteracts any radiative cooling effect. In this work, efficient sub-ambient DRC (Day: -4 °C, Night: -11 °C) from a vibrant, structurally colored film prepared from naturally derived cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), is instead demonstrated. Arising from the underlying photonic nanostructure, the film selectively reflects visible light resulting in intense, fade-resistant coloration, while maintaining a low solar absorption (≈3%). Additionally, a high emission within the mid-infrared atmospheric window (>90%) allows for significant radiative heat loss. By coating such CNC films onto a highly scattering, porous ethylcellulose (EC) base layer, any sunlight that penetrates the CNC layer is backscattered by the EC layer below, achieving broadband solar reflection and vibrant structural color simultaneously. Finally, scalable manufacturing using a commercially relevant roll-to-roll process validates the potential to produce such colored radiative cooling materials at a large scale from a low-cost and sustainable feedstock.

Project description:Radiative cooling presents a method for reducing the operational temperature of solar panels without additional energy consumption. However, its applicability to PV modules has been limited by the thermal properties of existing materials. To overcome these challenges, we introduce a V-shaped design that enhances cooling in vertical PV modules by effectively harnessing thermal radiation from both the front and rear sides, resulting in a substantial temperature reduction of 10.6°C under 1 sun illumination in controlled laboratory conditions. Field tests conducted in warm and humid conditions, specifically in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, demonstrate a remarkable 15% increase in efficiency while maintaining an operating temperature 0.2°C lower than that of conventional horizontal PV modules, corresponding to a significant 16.8% increase in power output. Our innovative V-shaped design offers a promising thermal strategy suitable for diverse climates, contributing to improved performance and reduced module temperatures, thereby supporting the global pursuit of carbon neutrality.

Project description:Silica aerogels are one of the most widely used aerogels, exhibiting excellent thermal insulation performance and ultralow density. However, owing to their plenitude of Si-O-Si bonds, they possess high infrared emissivity in the range of 8-13 µm and are potentially robust passive radiative cooling (PRC) materials. In this study, the PRC behavior of traditional silica aerogels prepared from methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS) in outdoor environments was investigated. The silica aerogels possessed low thermal conductivity of 0.035 W/m·K and showed excellent thermal insulation performance in room environments. However, sub-ambient cooling of 12 °C was observed on a clear night and sub-ambient cooling of up to 7.5 °C was achieved in the daytime, which indicated that in these cases the silica aerogel became a robust cooling material rather than a thermal insulator owing to its high IR emissivity of 0.932 and high solar reflectance of 0.924. In summary, this study shows the PRC performance of silica aerogels, and the findings guide the utilization of silica aerogels by considering their application environments for achieving optimal thermal management behavior.

Project description:The nanostructure composed of nanomaterials and subwavelength units offers flexible design freedom and outstanding advantages over conventional devices. In this paper, a multifunctional nanostructure with phase-change material (PCM) is proposed to achieve tunable infrared detection, radiation cooling and infrared (IR)-laser compatible camouflage. The structure is very simple and is modified from the classic metal-dielectric-metal (MIM) multilayer film structure. We innovatively composed the top layer of metals with slits, and introduced a non-volatile PCM Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) for selective absorption/radiation regulation. According to the simulation results, wide-angle and polarization-insensitive dual-band infrared detection is realized in the four-layer structure. The transformation from infrared detection to infrared stealth is realized in the five-layer structure, and laser stealth is realized in the atmospheric window by electromagnetic absorption. Moreover, better radiation cooling is realized in the non-atmospheric window. The proposed device can achieve more than a 50% laser absorption rate at 10.6 μm while ensuring an average infrared emissivity below 20%. Compared with previous works, our proposed multifunctional nanostructures can realize multiple applications with a compact structure only by changing the temperature. Such ultra-thin, integratable and multifunctional nanostructures have great application prospects extending to various fields such as electromagnetic shielding, optical communication and sensing.

Project description:Passive radiative cooling (RC) enables the cooling of objects below ambient temperature during daytime without consuming energy, promising to be a game changer in terms of energy savings and CO2 reduction. However, so far most RC surfaces are obtained by energy-intensive nanofabrication processes or make use of unsustainable materials. These limitations are overcome by developing cellulose films with unprecedentedly low absorption of solar irradiance and strong mid-infrared (mid-IR) emittance. In particular, a cellulose-derivative (cellulose acetate) is exploited to produce porous scattering films of two different thicknesses, L ≈ 30 µm (thin) and L ≈ 300 µm (thick), making them adaptable to above and below-ambient cooling applications. The thin and thick films absorb only ≈5%${\approx}5\%$ of the solar irradiance, which represents a net cooling power gain of at least 17 W m-2 , compared to state-of-the-art cellulose-based radiative-cooling materials. Field tests show that the films can reach up to ≈5 °C below ambient temperature, when solar absorption and conductive/convective losses are minimized. Under dryer conditions (water column = 1 mm), it is estimated that the films can reach average minimum temperatures of ≈7-8 °C below the ambient. The work presents an alternative cellulose-based material for efficient radiative cooling that is simple to fabricate, cost-efficient and avoids the use of polluting materials.

Project description:Personal protective textiles have attracted extensive interest since Corona Virus Disease 2019 has broken out. Moreover, developing eco-friendly, multifunctional waterproof, and breathable surface is of great importance but still faces enormous challenges. Notably, good hydrophobicity and breathability are necessary for protective textiles, especially protective clothing and face masks for healthcare. Herein, the multifunctional composite coatings with good UV-resistant, anti-oxidative, hydrophobic, breathable, and photothermal performance has been rapidly created to meet protective requirements. First, the gallic acid and chitosan polymer was coated onto the cotton fabric surface. Subsequently, the modified silica sol was anchored on the coated cotton fabric surface. The successful fabrication of composite coatings was verified by RGB values obtained from the smartphone and K/S value. The present work is an advance for realizing textile hydrophobicity by utilizing fluorine-free materials, compared with the surface hydrophobicity fabricated with conventional fluorinated materials. The surface free energy has been reduced from 84.2 to27.6 mJ/m2 so that the modified cotton fabric could repel the ethylene glycol, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide solutions, respectively. Besides, the composite coatings possesses lower adhesion to deionized water. After 70 cycles of the sandpaper abrasion, the fluorine-free hydrophobic coatings still exhibits good hydrophobicity with WCA of 124.6 ± 0.9°, with overcoming the intrinsic drawback of the poor abrasion resistance of hydrophobic surfaces. Briefly, the present work may provide a universal strategy for rapidly creating advanced protective coatings to meet personal healthcare, and a novel method for detecting RGB values of composite coatings by smartphone.

Project description:Demonstrations of passive daytime radiative cooling have primarily relied on complex and costly spectrally selective nanophotonic structures with high emissivity in the transparent atmospheric spectral window and high reflectivity in the solar spectrum. Here, we show a directional approach to passive radiative cooling that exploits the angular confinement of solar irradiation in the sky to achieve sub-ambient cooling during the day regardless of the emitter properties in the solar spectrum. We experimentally demonstrate this approach using a setup comprising a polished aluminum disk that reflects direct solar irradiation and a white infrared-transparent polyethylene convection cover that minimizes diffuse solar irradiation. Measurements performed around solar noon show a minimum temperature of 6?°C below ambient temperature and maximum cooling power of 45 W?m-2. Our passive cooling approach, realized using commonly available low-cost materials, could improve the performance of existing cooling systems and enable next-generation thermal management and refrigeration solutions.

Project description:Radiative cooling is an emerging cooling technology that can passively release heat to the environment. To obtain a subambient cooling effect during the daytime, chemically engineered structural materials are widely explored to simultaneously reject sunlight and preserve strong thermal emission. However, many previously reported fabrication processes involve hazardous chemicals, which can hinder a material's ability to be mass produced. In order to eliminate the hazardous chemicals used in the fabrication of previous works, this article reports a white polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge fabricated by a sustainable process using microsugar templates. By substituting the chemicals for sugar, the manufacturing procedure produces zero toxic waste and can also be endlessly recycled via methods widely used in the sugar industry. The obtained porous PDMS exhibits strong visible scattering and thermal emission, resulting in an efficient temperature reduction of 4.6 °C and cooling power of 43 W m-2 under direct solar irradiation. In addition, due to the air-filled voids within the PDMS sponge, its thermal conductivity remains low at 0.06 W (m K)-1 . This unique combination of radiative cooling and thermal insulation properties can efficiently suppress the heat exchange with the solar-heated rooftop or the environment, representing a promising future for new energy-efficient building envelope material.
