Project description:An approach for the multilayer density analysis of polysaccharide thin films at the example of cellulose is presented. In detail, a model was developed for the evaluation of the density in different layers across the thickness direction of the film. The cellulose thin film was split into a so called "roughness layer" present at the surface and a "bulk layer" attached to the substrate surface. For this approach, a combination of multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to detect changes in the properties, such as cellulose content and density, thickness and refractive index, of the surface near layer and the bulk layer. The surface region of the films featured a much lower density than the bulk. Further, these results correlate to X-ray reflectivity studies, indicating a similar layered structure with reduced density at the surface near regions. The proposed method provides an approach to analyse density variations in thin films which can be used to study material properties and swelling behavior in different layers of the films. Limitations and challenges of the multilayer model evaluation method of cellulose thin films were discussed. This particularly involves the selection of the starting values for iteration of the layer thickness of the top layer, which was overcome by incorporation of AFM data in this study.

Project description:Periodic delamination patterns in multilayer structures have exhibited extensive applications in microelectronics and optics devices. However, delamination behaviors of a closed thin shell on spherical substrates are still elusive. Herein, a unique instability mechanism of buckle delamination in a closed thin film weakly bonded to spherical substrates is studied by experiments, simulations, and theoretical analyses. The system of an Al film depositing on polystyrene spheres subjected to thermal mismatch strain is used for demonstration. Unlike traditional phenomena of wrinkling and wrinkle-induced delamination under increasing misfit strain, the weak adhesion between the core and shell results in a periodic pattern of delaminated hexagonal dimples that emerges directly from the smooth sphere configuration, before which no wrinkling occurs. Both substrate curvature and interfacial adhesion are revealed to control the dimple size and delamination width. These findings open a new venue for manifesting new controllable features for surface microfabrication.

Project description:Few-layer black phosphorus (BP), also known as phosphorene, is poised to be the most attractive graphene analogue owing to its high mobility approaching that of graphene, and its thickness-tunable band gap that can be as large as that of molybdenum disulfide. In essence, phosphorene represents the much sought after high-mobility, large direct band gap two-dimensional layered crystal that is ideal for optoelectronics and flexible devices. However, its instability in air is of paramount concern for practical applications. Here, we demonstrate air-stable BP devices with dielectric and hydrophobic encapsulation. Microscopy, spectroscopy, and transport techniques were employed to elucidate the aging mechanism, which can initiate from the BP surface for bare samples, or edges for samples with thin dielectric coating, highlighting the ineffectiveness of conventional scaled dielectrics. Our months-long studies indicate that a double layer capping of Al2O3 and hydrophobic fluoropolymer affords BP devices and transistors with indefinite air-stability for the first time, overcoming a critical material challenge for applied research and development.

Project description:Transparent conductive multilayer thin films of silver (Ag)-embedded barium stannate (BaSnO3) structures have been deposited onto flexible polycarbonate substrates by magnetron sputtering at room temperature to develop an indium free transparent flexible electrode. The effect of thicknesses of Ag mid-layer and barium stannate layers on optical and electrical properties were investigated, and the mechanisms of conduction and transmittance were discussed. The highest value of figure of merit is 25.5 × 10-3 Ω-1 for the BaSnO3/Ag/BaSnO3 multilayer flexible thin films with 9 nm thick silver mid-layer and 50 nm thick barium stannate layers, while the average optical transmittance in the visible range from 380 to 780 nm is above 87%, the resistivity is 9.66 × 10-5 Ω · cm, and the sheet resistance is 9.89 Ω/sq. The change rate of resistivity is under 10% after repeated bending of the multilayer flexible thin films. These results indicate that Ag-based barium stannate multilayer flexible thin films can be used as transparent flexible electrodes in various flexible optoelectronic devices.

Project description:Complex functional films containing enzymes and other biomolecules are easily fabricated in nm-scale thicknesses by using layer-by-layer (LbL) methodologies first popularized by Lvov and Decher. In this review, we highlight the high level functional capabilities possible with LbL films of biomolecules based on our own research experiences. We first describe the basics of enzyme film fabrication by LbL alternate electrostatic adsorption, then discuss how to make functional enzyme-polyion films of remarkably high stability. Focusing on cytochrome P450s, we discuss films developed to electrochemically activate the natural catalytic cycle of these key metabolic enzymes. We then describe multifunctional, multicomponent DNA/enzyme/polyion films on arrays and particle surfaces for high throughput metabolic toxicity screening using electrochemiluminescence and LC-MS/MS. Using multicomponent LbL films, complex functionality for bioanalytical and biochemical purposes can be achieved that is difficult or impossible using conventional approaches.

Project description:Nanofabrication through conventional methods such as electron beam writing and photolithography is time-consuming, high cost, complex, and limited in terms of the materials which can be processed. Here, we present the development of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 220 mJ) in holographic Denisyuk reflection mode method for creating ablative nanopatterns from thin films of four ink colors (black, red, blue, and brown). We establish the use of ink as a recording medium in different colors and absorption ranges to rapidly produce optical nanostructures in 1D geometries. The gratings produced with four different types of ink had the same periodicity (840 nm); however, they produce distant wavelength dependent diffraction responses to monochromatic and broadband light. The nanostructures of gratings consisting of blue and red inks displayed high diffraction efficiency of certain wavelengths while the black and brown ink based gratings diffracted broadband light. These gratings have high potential to be used as low-cost photonic structures in wavelength-dependent optical filters. We anticipate that the rapid production of gratings based on different ink formulations can enable optics applications such as holographic displays in data storage, light trapping, security systems, and sensors.

Project description:In the present study, fluoride removal from drinking water is investigated using layer-by-layer (LbL) fabricated poly(sodium 4-styrene-sulfonate) (PSS)/Al2O3 thin films. The surface morphology of the fabricated thin films is characterized using atomic force microscopy and field emission-scanning electron microscopy. Optical profilometry is used to determine the self-assembly of the multilayer thin films. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial fluoride content, number of bilayers, surface area, and pH is thoroughly studied. Fluoride removal increases with the number of bilayers and number of slides (total surface area). The amount of fluoride adsorbed increases from 11.32 to 26 mg L-1 when the number of substrates increases from 1 to 5. A 68% removal of fluoride is observed when 20 bilayers of PSS/Al2O3 thin films with three slides at an initial fluoride concentration of 5 mg L-1 are used, thereby bringing down the fluoride concentration level below the World Health Organization permissible limit. Slide reusability studies reveal that the fabricated thin films can be used for ten cycles without affecting the fluoride removal properties of the film. This study demonstrates the potential application of immobilized PSS/Al2O3 thin films as an effective adsorbent for drinking water purification.

Project description:A significant challenge in the rational design of organic thermoelectric materials is to realize simultaneously high electrical conductivity and high induced-voltage in response to a thermal gradient, which is represented by the Seebeck coefficient. Conventional wisdom posits that the polymer alone dictates thermoelectric efficiency. Herein, we show that doping - in particular, clustering of dopants within conjugated polymer films - has a profound and predictable influence on their thermoelectric properties. We correlate Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of iodine-doped poly(3-hexylthiophene) and poly[2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-3,6-diyl)-alt-(2,2';5',2'';5'',2'''-quaterthiophen-5,5'''-diyl)] films with Kelvin probe force microscopy to highlight the role of the spatial distribution of dopants in determining overall charge transport. We fit the experimental data to a phonon-assisted hopping model and found that the distribution of dopants alters the distribution of the density of states and the Kang-Snyder transport parameter. These results highlight the importance of controlling dopant distribution within conjugated polymer films for thermoelectric and other electronic applications.

Project description:Charge transport in three-dimensional metal-halide perovskite semiconductors is due to a complex combination of ionic and electronic contributions, and its study is particularly relevant in light of their successful applications in photovoltaics as well as other opto- and microelectronic applications. Interestingly, the observation of field effect at room temperature in transistors based on solution-processed, polycrystalline, three-dimensional perovskite thin films has been elusive. In this work, we study the time-dependent electrical characteristics of field-effect transistors based on the model methylammonium lead iodide semiconductor and observe the drastic variations in output current, and therefore of apparent charge carrier mobility, as a function of the applied gate pulse duration. We infer this behavior to the accumulation of ions at the grain boundaries, which hamper the transport of carriers across the FET channel. This study reveals the dynamic nature of the field effect in solution-processed metal-halide perovskites and offers an investigation methodology useful to characterize charge carrier transport in such emerging semiconductors.

Project description:Topological insulators (TIs) possess exciting nonlinear optical properties due to presence of metallic surface states with the Dirac fermions and are predicted as a promising material for broadspectral phodotection ranging from UV (ultraviolet) to deep IR (infrared) or terahertz range. The recent experimental reports demonstrating nonlinear optical properties are mostly carried out on non-flexible substrates and there is a huge demand for the fabrication of high performing flexible optoelectronic devices using new exotic materials due to their potential applications in wearable devices, communications, sensors, imaging etc. Here first time we integrate the thin films of TIs (Bi2Te3) with the flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrate and report the strong light absorption properties in these devices. Owing to small band gap material, evolving bulk and gapless surface state conduction, we observe high responsivity and detectivity at NIR (near infrared) wavelengths (39 A/W, 6.1 × 108 Jones for 1064 nm and 58 A/W, 6.1 × 108 Jones for 1550 nm). TIs based flexible devices show that photocurrent is linearly dependent on the incident laser power and applied bias voltage. Devices also show very fast response and decay times. Thus we believe that the superior optoelectronic properties reported here pave the way for making TIs based flexible optoelectronic devices.
