<h4>Background</h4>Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a major cause of acute morbidity and mortality. APE results in long-term morbidity in up to 50% of survivors, known as post-pulmonary embolism (post-PE) syndrome.  APE can be classified according to the short-term (30-day) risk of mortality, based on a variety of clinical, imaging and laboratory findings.
