Project description:Raman scattering is sensitive to local temperature and thus offers a convenient tool for non-contact and non-destructive optical thermometry at the nanoscale. In turn, all-dielectric nanostructures, such as silicon particles, exhibit strongly enhanced photothermal heating due to Mie resonances, which leads to the strong modulation of elastic Rayleigh scattering intensity through subsequent thermo-optical effects. However, the influence of the complex photo-thermo-optical effect on inelastic Raman scattering has yet to be explored for resonant dielectric nanostructures. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that the strong photo-thermo-optical interaction results in the nonlinear dependence of the Raman scattering signal intensity from a crystalline silicon nanoparticle via the thermal reconfiguration of the resonant response. Our results reveal a crucial role of the Mie resonance spectral sensitivity to temperature, which modifies not only the conversion of the incident light into heat but also Raman scattering efficiency. The developed comprehensive model provides the mechanism for thermal modulation of Raman scattering, shedding light on the photon-phonon interaction physics of resonant material, which is essential for the validation of Raman nanothermometry in resonant silicon structures under a strong laser field.

Project description:Recently we have reported electronic pre-resonance stimulated Raman scattering (epr-SRS) microscopy as a powerful technique for super-multiplex imaging ( Wei, L. ; Nature 2017 , 544 , 465 - 470 ). However, under rigorous electronic resonance, background signal, which mainly originates from pump-probe process, overwhelms the desired vibrational signature of the chromophores. Here we demonstrate electronic resonant stimulated Raman scattering (er-SRS) microspectroscopy and imaging through suppression of electronic background and subsequent retrieval of vibrational peaks. We observed a change of the vibrational band shapes from normal Lorentzian, through dispersive shapes, to inverted Lorentzian as the electronic resonance was approached, in agreement with theoretical prediction. In addition, resonant Raman cross sections have been determined after power-dependence study as well as Raman excitation profile calculation. As large as 10-23 cm2 of resonance Raman cross section is estimated in er-SRS, which is about 100 times higher than previously reported in epr-SRS. These results of er-SRS microspectroscopy pave the way for the single-molecule Raman detection and ultrasensitive biological imaging.

Project description:Photoluminescence measurements in mono- and bilayer-MoS2 on SiO2 were undertaken to determine the thermal effect of the MoS2/SiO2 interface on the optical bandgap. The energy and intensity of the photoluminescence from monolayer MoS2 were lower and weaker than those from bilayer MoS2 at low temperatures, whilst the opposite was true at high temperatures above 200 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the observed optical bandgap crossover is caused by a weaker substrate coupling to the bilayer than to the monolayer.

Project description:In this study, we explored the gas-sensing capabilities of MoS2 petaloid nanosheets in the metallic 1T phase with the commonly investigated semiconducting 2H phase. By synthesizing SnS2 nanoparticles and MoS2 petaloid nanosheets through a hydrothermal method, we achieve notable sensing performance for NO2 gas at room temperature (27 °C). This investigation represents a novel study, and to the best of our knowledge no, prior similar investigations have been reported in the literature for 1T@2HMoS2/SnS2 heterostructures for room temperature NO2 gas sensing. The formed heterostructure between SnS2 nanoparticles and petaloid MoS2 nanosheets exhibits synergistic effects, offering highly active sites for NO2 gas adsorption, consequently enhancing sensor response. Our sensor demonstrated a remarkable sensing response (R a/R g = 7.49) towards 1 ppm of NO2, rapid response time of 54 s, baseline recovery in 345 s, good selectivity and long-term stability, underscoring its potential for practical gas-sensing applications.

Project description:The detection of cancer biomarkers at an early stage of tumor development is vital for effective diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Current diagnostic tools can often detect cancer only when the biomarker levels are already too high, so that the tumors have spread and treatments are less effective. It is urgent therefore to develop highly sensitive assays for the detection of such biomarkers at the lowest possible concentration. In this context, we developed a sandwich immunoassay based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the ultrasensitive detection of α-fetoprotein (AFP), which is typically present in human serum as a biomarker indicative of early stages of hepatocellular carcinoma. In the immunoassay design, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) modified with a monoclonal antibody was used as a capture probe for AFP. A secondary antibody linked to an SERS-encoded nanoparticle was employed as the Raman signal reporter, that is, the transducer for AFP detection. The sandwich immunocomplex "capture probe/target/SERS tag" was deposited on a silicon wafer and decorated with silver-coated gold nanocubes to increase the density of "hot spots" on the surface of the immunosensor. The developed SERS immunosensor exhibits a wide linear detection range (1 pg mL-1 to 10 ng mL-1) with a limit of detection as low as 0.03 pg mL-1 toward AFP with good reproducibility (RSD < 6%) and stability. These parameters demonstrate that the proposed immunosensor has the potential to be used as an analytical platform for the detection of early-stage cancer biomarkers in clinical applications.

Project description:Magneto-optical effects, which originate from the interactions between light and magnetism, have provided an important way to characterize magnetic materials and hosted abundant applications, such as light modulators, magnetic field sensors, and high-density data storage. However, such effects are too weak to be detected in non-magnetic materials due to the absence of spin degree of freedom. Here, we demonstrated that applying a perpendicular magnetic field can produce a colossal Raman scattering rotation in non-magnetic MoS2, for A-mode representing the out-of-plane breathing vibration. Our experimental results show that linearly polarized scattering light is rotated by ∓125°, more apparent than the valley Zeeman splitting effect (∓1.2 meV) under the same experimental conditions (±5 T), near room temperature. A detailed and systematic analysis on the polarization-resolved magnetic field-dependent micro-zone Raman intensity offers a feasible way to manipulate the inelastically scattered light via a magnetic technique. This explored phenomenology and physical mechanism arouse a new ramification of probing burgeoning magneto-optical effects in the field of two-dimensional laminar materials.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers and their heterostructures have attracted considerable attention due to their distinct properties. In this work, we performed a systematic investigation of MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures, focusing on their temperature-dependent Raman and photoluminescence (PL) characteristics in the range of 79 to 473 K. Our Raman analysis revealed that both the longitudinal and transverse modes of the heterostructure exhibit linear shifts towards low frequencies with increasing temperatures. The peak position and intensity of PL spectra also showed pronounced temperature dependency. The activation energy of thermal-quenching-induced PL emissions was estimated as 61.5 meV and 82.6 meV for WSe2 and MoS2, respectively. Additionally, we observed that the spectral full width at half maximum (FWHM) of Raman and PL peaks increases as the temperature increases, and these broadenings can be attributed to the phonon interaction and the expansion of the heterostructure's thermal coefficients. This work provides valuable insights into the interlayer coupling of van der Waals heterostructures, which is essential for understanding their potential applications in extreme temperatures.

Project description:Double-resonance Raman scattering is a sensitive probe to study the electron-phonon scattering pathways in crystals. For semiconducting two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides, the double-resonance Raman process involves different valleys and phonons in the Brillouin zone, and it has not yet been fully understood. Here we present a multiple energy excitation Raman study in conjunction with density functional theory calculations that unveil the double-resonance Raman scattering process in monolayer and bulk MoS2. Results show that the frequency of some Raman features shifts when changing the excitation energy, and first-principle simulations confirm that such bands arise from distinct acoustic phonons, connecting different valley states. The double-resonance Raman process is affected by the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition, and a comparison of results in monolayer and bulk allows the assignment of each Raman feature near the M or K points of the Brillouin zone. Our work highlights the underlying physics of intervalley scattering of electrons by acoustic phonons, which is essential for valley depolarization in MoS2.

Project description:Tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) has recently emerged as a powerful technique for studying the local properties of low dimensional materials. Being a plasmon driven system, a dramatic enhancement of the TERS sensitivity can be achieved by an appropriate choice of the plasmonic substrate in the so-called gap-mode configuration. Here, we investigate the phonon properties of CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) utilizing gap-mode TERS. Using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, we homogeneously deposited submonolayers of colloidal CdSe NCs on two different nanostructured plasmonic substrates. Amplified by resonant gap-mode TERS, the scattering by the optical phonon modes of CdSe NCs is markedly enhanced making it possible to observe up to the third overtone of the LO mode reliably. The home-made plasmonic substrates and TERS tips allow the analysis of the TERS images of CdSe phonon modes with nanometer spatial resolution. The CdSe phonon scattering intensity is strongly correlated with the local electromagnetic field distribution across the plasmonic substrates.

Project description:Germanium monosulfide with an anisotropic puckered crystalline structure has recently attracted much attention due to its unique optical and electronic properties; however, exciton-phonon interactions were only superficially elucidated. We study the resonant Raman scattering and the photoluminescence of the optically active Γ-exciton in layered GeS flakes and evaluate the exciton and phonon responses on variations in the excitation energy, laser-light and emission polarizations, temperature, and laser power. A double-resonance mechanism allows for observing Raman forbidden (dark) first- and second-order longitudinal-optical phonon modes whose symmetries and energies are moreover calculated by density functional perturbation theory. For (quasi)-resonant exciton excitation, the selection rules become relaxed so that a fourth-order Fröhlich intraband process is mediated by the scattering of the electron with a longitudinal-optical and an acoustic phonon. Our results demonstrate considerable coupling between phonons and photogenerated carriers in GeS flakes and the high efficiency of multiorder scattering in optical processes.
