Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are critical metalloenzymes mitigating the damages of the modern oxygenated world. However, the emergence of one family of SODs, the Fe/Mn SOD, has been recurrently proposed to predate the great oxygenation event (GOE). This ancient family lacks metal binding selectivity, but displays strong catalytic selectivity.
