In cystic fibrosis (CF), reduced HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> secretion acidifies the airway surface liquid (ASL), and the acidic pH disrupts host defenses. Thus, understanding the control of ASL pH (pH<sub>ASL</sub>) in CF may help identify novel targets and facilitate therapeutic development.
