Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizers with Biodegradable Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) Coating: Their Effect on the Growth of Maize and the Dynamics of N Release in Soil.

ABSTRACT: Fertilizers play an essential role in agriculture due to the rising food demand. However, high input fertilizer concentration and the non-controlled leaching of nutrients cause an unwanted increase in reactive, unassimilated nitrogen and induce environmental pollution. This paper investigates the preparation and properties of slow-release fertilizer with fully biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) coating that releases nitrogen gradually and is not a pollutant for soil. Nitrogen fertilizer (calcium ammonium nitrate) was pelletized with selected filler materials (poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), struvite, dried biomass). Pellets were coated with a solution of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) in dioxolane that formed a high-quality and thin polymer coating. Coated pellets were tested in aqueous and soil environments. Some coated pellets showed excellent resistance even after 76 days in water, where only 20% of the ammonium nitrate was released. Pot experiments in Mitscherlich vegetation vessels monitored the effect of the application of coated fertilizers on the development and growth of maize and the dynamics of N release in the soil. We found that the use of our coated fertilizers in maize nutrition is a suitable way to supply nutrients to plants concerning their needs and that the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) that was used for the coating does not adversely affect the growth of maize plants.

Project description:The one-time application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer can not only reduce the labor input, but also reduce the mechanical input cost, and has the characteristics of slow release and reduce volatilization loss. This research is grounded in a localization trial initiated in 2018, which underwent comprehensive analysis utilizing high-throughput sequencing technology to elucidate the mutual feeding mechanism of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application rate on microbial community structure, network complexity, and maize yield in different root niches (bulk soil, rhizosphere, and endosphere). Soil characteristics, microbial community composition, and collinear network of different ecological niches under slow-release nitrogen fertilizer were analyzed, and the key core species affecting the stability of the microbial network and the factors driving yield were identified. The results showed that nitrogen application increased the diversity of bacteria, and nitrogen application significantly increased the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi due to rhizosphere effects. Slow-release nitrogen fertilizer increased the complexity of the bacterial network and decreased the complexity of the fungal network, particularly, the network complexity of bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere was higher than that in the bulk soil and the rhizosphere. The application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer increased the abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Gemmatimonadota, Actinobacteria, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and other dominant bacteria. Coordinate soil physical and chemical properties, increase soil enzyme activity and soil nutrients, improve soil microenvironment, regulate microbial community composition, and promote above-ground yield increase, in which nitrogen application, urease, nitrate reductase and nitrate nitrogen are the main driving factors for yield increase. These findings provide a new idea for the mutual feeding mechanism of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer on microbial diversity and yield in different ecological niches. Project description:IntroductionLong-term application of excessive nitrogen (N) not only leads to low N use efficiency (NUE) but also exacerbates the risk of environmental pollution due to N losses. Substituting partial chemical N with organic fertilizer (SP) is an environmentally friendly and sustainable fertilization practice. However, the appropriate rate of SP in rainfed maize cropping systems in semi-arid regions of China is unknown.MethodsTherefore, we conducted a field experiment between 2021 and 2022 in a semi-arid region of Northern China to investigate the effects of SP on maize growth, carbon and N metabolism (C/NM), and NUE. The following treatments were used in the experiment: no N application (CK), 100% chemical N (SP0, 210 kg N ha-1), and SP substituting 15% (SP1), 30% (SP2), 45% (SP3), and 60% (SP4) of the chemical N. The relationship between these indicators and grain yield (GY) was explored using the Mantel test and structural equation modeling (SEM).Results and discussionThe results found that the SP1 and SP2 treatments improved the assimilates production capacity of the canopy by increasing the leaf area index, total chlorophyll content, and net photosynthetic rate, improving dry matter accumulation (DMA) by 6.2%-10.6%, compared to the SP0 treatment. SP1 and SP2 treatments increased total soluble sugars, starch, free amino acids, and soluble protein contents in ear leaves via increasing the enzymatic reactions related to C/NM in ear leaves during the reproductive growth stage compared with SP0 treatment. The highest plant nitrogen uptake (PNU) and nitrogen recovery efficiency were obtained under the SP2 treatment, and the GY and nitrogen agronomic efficiency were higher than the SP0 treatment by 9.2% and 27.8%. However, SP3 and SP4 treatments reduced DMA and GY by inhibiting C/NM in ear leaves compared to SP0 treatment. Mantel test and SEM results revealed that SP treatments indirectly increased GY and PNU by directly positively regulating C/NM in maize ear leaves. Therefore, in the semi-arid regions, substituting 30% of the chemical N with SP could be considered. This fertilizer regime may avoid GY reduction and improve NUE. This study provides new insights into sustainable cultivation pathways for maize in semi-arid regions.
