Project description:BackgroundThe pharmacy profession has changed enormously in the recent decades. Pharmacist role has been expanded beyond formulating and dispensing medications to include the provision of pharmaceutical care and public health services to patients. Patient-centred care requires sustained competency through improving pharmacist's knowledge, skills, and performance. Such improvements require pharmacist's involvement in continuing education activities although it is optional in Kuwait.ObjectiveTo explore pharmacists' attitudes towards continuing education in Kuwait, and to investigate the perceived barriers that hinder pharmacists from being involved in continuing education activities.Setting.All governmental hospitals and polyclinics and private pharmacies in all the five health regions of Kuwait (Capital, Hawalli, Ahmadai, Farwaniyah, and Jahra).MethodA descriptive cross-sectional study conducted with full licensed pharmacists working in Kuwait. Pharmacists were asked to complete an adapted validated questionnaire composed of 14 items to measure their attitudes towards continuing education. In addition, it contains open-ended questions to obtain the type of learning activity undertaken by the pharmacists, and whether they have barriers that hinder them from being involved in continuing education.ResultsA total of 409 pharmacists completed the questionnaire. The participants had a median score of 44 (interquartile range = 41-47); good to excellent attitudes. Attitude scores were correlated with age and years of experience. Almost 70% of the participants had attended a continuing education activity within one year. The activity undertaken most by pharmacists was attending a seminar, compared to other activities. The main barriers to continuing education were lack of personal time (n = 383), lack of scientific databases and books (n = 187) and conferences are not regularly organized locally (n = 154).ConclusionPharmacists in Kuwait have positive attitudes towards continuing education overall. However, there are many obstacles that avert pharmacists to practice continuing education. Further studies are required to explore how to overcome the reported barriers and provide more feasible and relevant continuing education to pharmacists.

Project description:BackgroundThe worldwide market for continuing medical education (CME) was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which precipitated an increase in web-based CME course attendance. Virtual education methods may be effective for engaging learners and changing behaviors. However, more information is needed about physician preferences for in-person vs. livestreamed CME courses in the postpandemic era. Because of the paucity of data regarding this topic, the current study was designed to evaluate CME participant characteristics, preferences, engagement, and satisfaction with traditional in-person vs. virtual educational methods.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed of attendees of two large internal medicine CME courses held in 2021. Both CME courses were offered via in-person and livestream options, and were taught by Mayo Clinic content experts. Participants, who consisted of practicing physicians seeking CME, completed a 41-question survey after CME course completion. Statistical comparisons were performed by using Fisher exact tests for all survey items, except for those with ordinal response sets, which were compared with Cochran-Armitage trend tests.ResultsA total of 146 participants completed the survey (response rate, 30.2%). Among the 77 respondents who attended in-person courses, the most frequent reasons indicated were the opportunity to travel (66%) and collaboration/networking with others (25%). Among the 68 respondents who attended the livestream courses, the most frequent reasons indicated included COVID-19-related concerns (65%), convenience (46%), and travel costs (34%). The percentage of respondents who indicated that they would choose the same mode of attendance if given the option again was higher for those who attended in person than for those who attended via livestream (91% vs. 65%, P < .001).ConclusionsThese data suggest that in-person course offerings will continue to be a preferred learning method for some physicians. However, most respondents who attended virtually preferred that method. Therefore, hybrid CME models offering both in-person and virtual options may be most beneficial for meeting the needs of all CME learners.

Project description:BackgroundContinuing education (CE) is an international tool that requires lifelong active participation in learning activities allowing the pharmacist to stay a major player among others. In 2014 the CE program was introduced to the pharmacists licensed in Lebanon as a mandatory requirement for re-licensure. In the absence of guidelines regarding the quality and quantity of CE programs, behavioral resistance to precipitate in the CE programs might be encountered among the pharmacists.ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to assess the perceptions of pharmacists working in Lebanese hospitals on the continuing education preferences. The advantage of this program is to collect information that would help the Order of Pharmacy in Lebanon to upgrade the CE program in a way that is more acceptable and convenient for the pharmacists.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out in 2016, using a proportionate random sample of Lebanese hospital pharmacies from all governorates in Lebanon. A structured questionnaire was distributed to all hospital pharmacies in Lebanon. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all study variables. This includes the mean and standard deviation for continuous measures, counts and percentages for categorical variables.ResultsA total of 107 (53.5%) participants completed the questionnaires. The majority of participants were from Beirut and Mount Lebanon. The percentage of participants working at private hospitals was (68.2%).The majority of participants who completed the questionnaire (86.2%) agreed that continuing education programs affects their way of practice and increases their knowledge. Their preferred CE types to be used in the future were the computer based ones (60.6%), interactive workshops (45.5%) and printed materials (44.9%). Their considerations for selecting the CE type is based on their interest in the topic (80.6%), the ease of access to print or online material (77.2%), or the convenience of being offered during an event (67.1%). Participants noted that barriers to attend live CEs were mainly work responsibilities (76%), travel distance (65.6%), family commitments (48.4%) and scheduling (40.6%).ConclusionsLebanese hospital pharmacists are highly committed to CE. They consider it a practical tool for career development and advancement.

Project description:BackgroundPharmacists are now seeking to incorporate physical assessment (PA) into their practices. This trend prompted the creation, by the British Columbia Branch of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, of a 30-h course specifically designed for practising pharmacists.ObjectiveTo evaluate pharmacists' knowledge, skills, and confidence in performing PA after completing the course.MethodsAll course participants were invited to complete 2 anonymous online surveys, immediately and 6 months after course completion.ResultsOf the 218 participants, 82 (38%) responded to the survey administered immediately after the course, and 77 (35%) completed this survey in full. About half of the respondents (39/79 [49%]) reported use of PA on a real patient before taking the course. Lack of formal training and lack of comfort were the most frequently selected barriers to performing PA. All respondents (79/79) agreed that the course had improved their knowledge of PA, 96% (76/79) agreed that it had improved their skills, and 90% (71/79) agreed that it had improved their ability to care for patients. In addition, 61% (48/79) and 67% (53/79), respectively, agreed that they felt confident performing PA and intervening with regard to a patient's drug therapy on the basis of physical findings. Thirty-eight (17%) of the course participants completed the 6-month follow-up survey. In that survey, the most frequently selected barrier to performing PA was lack of time. Paired data, available for 23 respondents, showed a significant increase in use of PA on real patients over time (p = 0.013 by χ2 test). However, there was no significant improvement in confidence in performing PA or intervening on a patient's drug therapy on the basis of physical findings (p > 0.05 by 2-sided t test). The primary limitation of this study was potential responder bias.ConclusionsA PA course designed for pharmacists improved participants' self-reported knowledge and skills, as well as self-perceived ability to care for patients. Six months after the course, two-thirds of respondents had used PA in practice. However, there was no improvement in confidence in performing such assessments or using the findings to intervene on a patient's drug therapy.

Project description:BackgroundBurnout in health system pharmacists has been studied in several countries. To date, no data exists on burnout among healthsystem pharmacists in Lebanon. This study aimed to determine the prevalance of burnout, identify factors and describe coping strategies related to burnout among healthsystem pharmacists in Lebanon.MethodsA cross-sectional study utilizing the Maslach Burnout Inventory- Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS (MP))was conducted in Lebanon. A convenience sample of hospital pharmacists in Mount Lebanon and Beirut area filled a paper-based survey in person or via a phone interview. Burnout was defined as having an emotional exhaustion score ≥ 27 and/or depersonalization score ≥ 10. To identify factors associated with burnout, the survey also contained questions on socio-demographic characteristics, professional status, hospital characteristics, professional stressors and professional satisfaction. Participants were also asked about their coping strategies. To adjust for potential confounding, a multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the adjusted odds ratios of factors and coping strategies associated with burnout. The authors also evaluated burnout according to the broader definition, emotional exhaustion score ≥ 27 or depersonalization score ≥ 10 or low personal accomplishment ≤ 33.ResultsOf the 153 health system pharmacists who were contacted, 115 filled the survey (response rate of 75.1%). The overall burnout prevalence reported was n = 50 (43.5%) and was largely driven by high emotional exhaustion n = 41(36.9%). Following multivariate logistic regression, seven factors were associated with increased burnout: older age, B.S. in Pharmacy degree, involvement in student training, no involvement in procurement, divided attention at work, overall dissatisfaction with career, dissatisfaction to neutrality with balance between professional and personal life. Low personal accomplishment was noted in n = 55 (49.5%). The main coping strategies identified were holidays, leisure, hobbies, sports activities, and relaxation. There was no association between the coping strategies used and burnout. The prevalence of burnout according to the broader definition was n = 77 (67%). The factors associated with the broader definition of burnout were older age, overall dissatisfaction with career and dissatisfaction with work life balance.ConclusionApproximately n = 50(43.5%)of health system pharmacists in Lebanon may be at risk for burnout. If using broader definitions incorporating all three subscales of the (MBI-HSS (MP)), the prevalence of burnout was n = 77(67%). This study highlights the need to advocate for pratice reforms to improve the low personal acoomplishment and recommends strategies to mitigate burnout. Further research to assess the current prevalence of burnout and evaluate effective interventions in alleviating burnout amongst health system pharmacists is needed.

Project description:BackgroundContinuing Medical Education (CME) is an important part of the training process for health workers worldwide. In China, training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) not only improves the expertise of medical workers, but also supports the Chinese Government's policy of promoting TCM as an equal treatment to western medicine. CME, including learning Traditional Chinese Medicine Technologies (TCMTs), perform poorly and research into the motivation of health workers to engage in CME is urgently required. Using a discrete choice experiment, this study assessed the CME learning preferences of primary health workers, using TCMT as a case study of CME programs.MethodsWe conducted a discrete choice experiment among health workers in Shandong Province, Guizhou Province, and Henan provinces from July 1, 2021 to October 1, 2022 on the TCMT learning preferences of primary health workers. The mixed logit model and latent class analysis model were used to analyze primary health workers' TCMT learning preferences.ResultsA total of 1,063 respondents participated in this study, of which 1,001 (94.2%) passed the consistency test and formed the final sample. Our key finding was that there were three distinct classes of TCMT learners. Overall, the relative importance of the seven attributes impacting the learning of TCMTs were: learning expenses, expected TCMT efficacy, TCMT learning difficulty, TCMT mode of learning, TCMT type, time required to learn, and expected frequency of TCMT use. However, these attributes differed significantly across the three distinct classes of TCMT learners. Infrequent users (class 1) were concerned with learning expenses and learning difficulty; workaholics (class 2) focused on the mode of learning; and pragmatists (class 3) paid more attention to the expected TCMT efficacy and the expected frequency of TCMT use. We recommend targeted strategies to motivate TCMT learning suited to the requirements of each class of TCMT learners.ConclusionRather than a single TCMT medical education program for primary health workers, CME programs should be targeted at different classes of TCMT learners.

Project description:ObjectivesAttending professional continuing education (CE) is an important component of librarianship. This research study identified librarians' preferences in delivery modalities of instruction for professional CE. The study also identified influential factors associated with attending CE classes.MethodsFive instruction-delivery modalities and six influential factors were identified for inclusion in an online survey. The survey completed by members of the American Library Association (ALA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), and Medical Library Association (MLA) provided the data for analysis of librarian preferences and influential factors.ResultsThe majority of respondents were MLA members, followed by ALA and SLA members. Librarians from all three library associations preferred the face-to-face instructional modality. The most influential factor associated with the decision to attend a professional CE class was cost.ConclusionsAll five instruction-delivery modalities present useful structures for imparting professional CE. As librarians' experience with different modalities increases and as technology improves, preferences in instruction delivery may shift. But at present, face-to-face remains the most preferred modality. Based on the results of this study, cost was the most influential factor associated with attending a CE class. This may change as additional influential factors are identified and analyzed in future studies.

Project description:BackgroundAchieving sustainability in continuing medical education (CME) involves regular assessment of the evolving needs of healthcare professionals regarding their competencies and updates in educational content accordingly. This study aimed to investigate the key areas and competencies that physicians in Serbia prioritize for their professional development and to analyze the factors associated with these competencies.MethodThis cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,625 physicians who are members of the medical chamber in Serbia. Besides similar studies, the Delphi process among medical experts served to create the research instruments, while obtained data were analyzed using factor analysis and robust regression analysis.ResultsThe results pointed to a significant association between the scores in all identified domains (management, clinical practice, communication, public health, essentials and clinical emergency) and female gender. The score in the communication domain was additionally associated with work in privately owned institutions (B = 0.563). The scores in the public health domain and the basic medical skills (essentials domain) were additionally associated with age (B = 0.077 and B = 0.100), work in a primary healthcare institution (B = 2.327 and B = 2.155) and being a specialist (B=-1.795 and B=-2.901). The score on the clinical emergency domain, besides the female gender, was associated with work in primary health care (B = 0.748), being a specialist (B=-1.592) and being a subspecialist (B=-1.023).ConclusionThis research identified gaps in CME/CPD program knowledge and design. It outlined competency groups developed with expert consensus. Proposed actions include integrating key competencies and developing online self-assessment tools for everyday practice. This can help physicians and program organizers focus on essential competencies and exclude non-evidence-based ones.

Project description:BackgroundContinuing education (CE) is an internationally recommended approach as a lifelong learning model for pharmacists, enabling them to maintain the necessary knowledge, skills and ethical attitudes so as to remain current and competent in their practice.ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to 1) describe factors associated with taking different types of CE courses among pharmacists in Lebanon, and 2) assess the correlation between types of CE activity and the attitude of Lebanese pharmacists (motivation and value) and their computer literacy.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional observational study conducted between February and May 2017, using a random sample of Lebanese pharmacists from all districts of Lebanon. All pharmacists were eligible to participate; the sample consisted of those who agreed to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire includes questions about computer literacy, motivation and value about CE, in addition to sociodemographic characteristics of pharmacists.ResultsOut of the 750 questionnaires distributed, 628 (83.73%) were filled out and returned to be analyzed. The mean age of the participants was 39.04 (SD 10.57) years, 66.9% of them were females, and 41.1% of them had a bachelor degree in pharmacy and worked in Mount Lebanon. Among the 628 respondents, 567 (90.3%) have earned at least one CE credit. Of those, 5.4% took mainly online courses, 15.4% took mainly live courses and the remaining took both types of CE. Higher motivation (aOR=1.05; CI 0.994-1.109) and higher value (aOR=1.076; CI 0.968-1.197) were associated with higher odds of taking live CE courses. Higher motivation (aOR=1.07; 95%CI 0.994-1.152) was associated with higher odds of taking online CE courses. Higher motivation (aOR=1.059; 95%CI 1.006-1.114) and higher general confidence with computer use (aOR=1.058; 95%CI 1.012-1.106) were significantly associated with higher odds of taking both types of CE courses.ConclusionsA high percentage of Lebanese pharmacists enrolled in the CE system, mainly driven by motivation and value of CE, in addition to a higher general confidence in computer use. Further efforts should be exerted by the Lebanese Order of Pharmacists to motivate pharmacists and help them improve their computer literacy, which is expected to improve not only enrollment in CE activities, but also the completion of their CE requirements.

Project description:Continuing medical education (CME) is the foremost among the learning strategies that enhance knowledge and skills within the medical profession. This study aimed to evaluate primary healthcare professionals' CME in Abha City. A total of 267 primary health care (PHC) professionals. The researcher designed a data collection sheet that comprised personal characteristics and aspects of CME. About two-thirds of participants (65.5%) attended CME courses during the last year. The main criteria for attending CME courses were their topics (43.4%), convenience of time (41.2%), and interests (31.5%). About 16.1% of participants found that previously attended CME courses were not useful because of being a waste of time (12.7%), not obtaining any benefit (7.9%), and wasting of money (3.7%). On the other hand, 83.9% found that previously attended CME courses were useful because of their improved knowledge (68.9%) and skills (47.6%), while 30.7% stated that attending CME courses was to fulfill the required CME hours. Lectures were the most preferred educational method(48.3%). Hospital consultants were mostly preferred speakers (53.6%), followed by PHC physicians (34.1%) and university staff (25.8%). The main participants' source of information (95.5%), followed by textbooks (25.1%) and their colleagues at PHC (12.4%). About 31.5% of participants had no or low improvement in their knowledge, 38.6% underwent intermediate improvement and 30% had high improvement. Regarding improved skills, 43.4% had no or low improvement, 45.3% had intermediate improvement and 11.2% had high improvement. The main barriers against attending CME courses were the lack of time (44.9%) and the high workload (41.2%). CME attendance differed significantly according to participants' position (P = .023), with physicians being the most frequently attending (72.9%) and pharmacists being the least frequently attending (36.4%). Participants' knowledge improvement due to CME attendance differed significantly according to their position, with the highest improvement among lab technicians. Participants' skills improvement was highest among those aged > 40 years, among males, non-Saudis, those with Doctorate degrees, physicians, and those with > 10 years' experience. PHC professionals find CME courses valuable for knowledge enhancement, with lectures, videos, and presentations preferred. Information sources include internet, textbooks, and colleagues, but time constraints and workloads hinder attendance.
