Project description:Unprecedented metal-free photocatalytic CO2 conversion to CO (up to 228±48 μmol g-1 h-1) was displayed by TiO2@IL hybrid photocatalysts prepared by simple impregnation of commercially available P25-titanium dioxide with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). The high activity of TiO2@IL hybrid photocatalysts was mainly associated to (i) TiO2@IL red shift compared to the pure TiO2 absorption, and thus a modification of the TiO2 surface electronic structure; (ii) TiO2 with IL bearing imidazolate anions lowered the CO2 activation energy barrier. The reaction mechanism was postulated to occur via CO2 photoreduction to formate species by the imidazole/imidazole radical redox pair, yielding CO and water.

Project description:The formation of nanoscale phases at grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials has attracted much attention, since it offers a route toward targeted and controlled design of interface properties. However, understanding structure-property relationships at these complex interfacial defects is hampered by the great challenge of accurately determining their atomic structure. Here, we combine advanced electron microscopy together with ab initio random structure searching to determine the atomic structure of an experimentally fabricated Σ13 (221) [11̅0] grain boundary in rutile TiO2. Through careful analysis of the atomic structure and complementary electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis we identify the existence of a unique nanoscale phase at the grain boundary with striking similarities to the bulk anatase crystal structure. Our results show a path to embed nanoscale anatase into rutile TiO2 and showcase how the atomic structure of even complex internal interfaces can be accurately determined using a combined theoretical and experimental approach.

Project description:Rutile nano-titanium dioxide (RNTD) characterized by loose particles with diameter in 20-50 nm has a very large surface area for adsorption of Tl, a typical trace metal that has severe toxicity. The increasing application of RNTD and widespread discharge of Tl-bearing effluents from various industrial activities would increase the risk of their co-exposure in aquatic environments. The adsorption behavior of Tl(I) (a prevalent form of Tl in nature) on RNTD was studied as a function of solution pH, temperature, and ion strength. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics for Tl(I) were also investigated. The adsorption of Tl(I) on RNTD started at very low pH values and increased abruptly, then maintained at high level with increasing pH >9. Uptake of Tl(I) was very fast on RNTD in the first 15 min then slowed down. The adsorption of Tl(I) on RNTD was an exothermic process; and the adsorption isotherm of Tl(I) followed the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption amount of 51.2 mg/g at room temperature. The kinetics of Tl adsorption can be described by a pseudo-second-order equation. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed that -OH and -TiOO-H play an important role in the adsorption. All these results indicate that RNTD has a fast adsorption rate and excellent adsorption amount for Tl(I), which can thus alter the transport, bioavailability and fate of Tl(I) in aqueous environment.

Project description:Heterostructures formed by ultrathin borocarbonitride (BCN) layers grown on TiO2 nanoribbons were investigated as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. TiO2 nanoribbons were obtained by thermal oxidation of TiS3 samples. Then, BCN layers were successfully grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition. The structure and the chemical composition of the starting TiS3, the TiO2 nanoribbons and the TiO2-BCN heterostructures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Diffuse reflectance measurements showed a change in the gap from 0.94 eV (TiS3) to 3.3 eV (TiO2) after the thermal annealing of the starting material. Morphological characterizations, such as scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, show that the morphology of the samples was not affected by the change in the structure and composition. The obtained TiO2-BCN heterostructures were measured in a photoelectrochemical cell, showing an enhanced density of current under dark conditions and higher photocurrents when compared with TiO2. Finally, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the flat band potential was determined to be equal in both TiO2 and TiO2-BCN samples, whereas the product of the dielectric constant and the density of donors was higher for TiO2-BCN.

Project description:Both artificial photosystems and natural photosynthesis have not reached their full potential for the sustainable conversion of solar energy into specific chemicals. A promising approach is hybrid photosynthesis combining efficient, non-toxic, and low-cost abiotic photocatalysts capable of water splitting with metabolically versatile non-photosynthetic microbes. Here, we report the development of a water-splitting enzymatic photocatalyst made of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) coupled with H2O2-degrading catalase and its utilization for hybrid photosynthesis with the non-photosynthetic bacterium Ralstonia eutropha for bioplastic production. The g-C3N4-catalase system has an excellent solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 3.4% with a H2 evolution rate up to 55.72 μmol h-1 while evolving O2 stoichiometrically. The hybrid photosynthesis system built with the water-spitting g-C3N4-catalase photocatalyst doubles the production of the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate by R. eutropha from CO2 and increases it by 1.84-fold from fructose. These results illustrate how synergy between abiotic non-metallic photocatalyst, enzyme, and bacteria can augment solar-to-multicarbon chemical conversion.

Project description:With increasingly serious environmental pollution problems, the development of efficient photocatalytic materials has become a hotspot in current research. This study focused on phosphorus-doped carbon nitride/titanium dioxide (PCT) Z-type heterojunctions, aiming to deeply investigate their photocatalytic degradation and photosensitive antimicrobial properties. A PCT Z-type heterojunction was successfully fabricated using melamine phosphate, cyanuric acid, and titanium dioxide. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of PCT Z-type heterojunctions were explored by FTIR, XRD, XPS, BET, SEM, UV-Vis DRS, TEM, EIS, and PL. A comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the structure, morphology, and optical properties of PCT Z-type heterojunctions was carried out. The photocatalytic degradation experiments revealed that PC3T Z-type heterojunctions exhibited an excellent degradation capability for methylene blue (MB) under visible light. The effect of PC3T on the adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of MB is more than 1.5 times that of a single titanium dioxide and P-doped carbon nitride. In the photosensitive antimicrobial performance study, PC3T reduced the survival rate of E. coli to 7%, after 120 min. Through free radical trapping experiments, it was shown that the hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals exerted an influence on the photocatalytic process. This study offers new ideas and approaches to address environmental pollution problems and holds significant theoretical and applied value.

Project description:Carbon dioxide (CO2) photoreduction to high-value products is a technique for dealing with CO2 emissions. The method involves the molecular transformation of CO2 to hydrocarbon and alcohol-type chemicals, such as methane and methanol, relying on a photocatalyst, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2). In this research, TiO2 nanosheets (TNS) were synthesized using a hydrothermal technique in the presence of a hydrofluoric acid (HF) soft template. The nanosheets were further composited with graphene oxide and doped with copper oxide in the hydrothermal process to create the copper-TiO2 nanosheets/graphene oxide (CTNSG). The CTNSG exhibited outstanding photoactivity in converting CO2 gas to methane and acetone. The production rate for methane and acetone was 12.09 and 0.75 µmol h-1 gcat-1 at 100% relative humidity, providing a total carbon consumption of 71.70 µmol gcat-1. The photoactivity of CTNSG was attributed to the heterostructure interior of the two two-dimensional nanostructures, the copper-TiO2 nanosheets and graphene oxide. The nanosheets-graphene oxide interfaces served as the n-p heterojunctions in holding active radicals for subsequent reactions. The heterostructure also directed the charge transfer, which promoted electron-hole separation in the photocatalyst.

Project description:Benefiting from studies into Degussa TiO2, forming junctions via combining different phases of a semiconductor may provide new insights into the design of efficient photocatalysts, which are a key element in current solar-driven fuel production and environmental remediation. In this work, we aimed at creating a highly efficient rutile/brookite homojunction through precise crystal phase control. Characterization of the morphology and structure revealed that the ultrafine brookite phase TiO2 particles were uniformly attached to the surfaces of the rod-like rutile phase, not only readily forming a homojunction but also stabilizing the brookite phase. Surprisingly, the rutile/brookite-TiO2 homojunction exhibited a synergetic effect, improving the photocatalytic activity for both hydrogen generation and organic dye degradation. This was attributed to the well-matched band alignment and separated reaction sites, effectively promoting the charge separation efficiency. These results highlight the potential for bifunctional photocatalyst design with separated reactive sites for simultaneous redox reactions.

Project description:The electrooxidation of organic compounds offers a promising strategy for producing value-added chemicals through environmentally sustainable processes. A key challenge in this field is the development of electrocatalysts that are both effective and durable. In this study, we grow gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the surface of various phases of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as highly effective electrooxidation catalysts. Subsequently, the samples are tested for the oxidation of benzaldehyde (BZH) to benzoic acid (BZA) coupled with a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We observe the support containing a combination of rutile and anatase phases to provide the highest activity. The excellent electrooxidation performance of this Au-TiO2 sample is correlated with its mixed-phase composition, large surface area, high oxygen vacancy content, and the presence of Lewis acid active sites on its surface. This catalyst demonstrates an overpotential of 0.467 V at 10 mA cm-2 in a 1 M KOH solution containing 20 mM BZH, and 0.387 V in 100 mM BZH, well below the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential. The electrooxidation of BZH not only serves as OER alternative in applications such as electrochemical hydrogen evolution, enhancing energy efficiency, but simultaneously allows for the generation of high-value byproducts such as BZA.

Project description:Supported metal catalysts play a central role in the modern chemical industry but often exhibit poor on-stream stability. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) offers a route to control the structural properties of supported metals and, hence, their reactivity and stability. Conventional wisdom holds that supported Au cannot manifest a classical SMSI, which is characterized by reversible metal encapsulation by the support upon high-temperature redox treatments. We demonstrate a classical SMSI for Au/TiO2, evidenced by suppression of CO adsorption, electron transfer from TiO2 to Au nanoparticles, and gold encapsulation by a TiO x overlayer following high-temperature reduction (reversed by subsequent oxidation), akin to that observed for titania-supported platinum group metals. In the SMSI state, Au/TiO2 exhibits markedly improved stability toward CO oxidation. The SMSI extends to Au supported over other reducible oxides (Fe3O4 and CeO2) and other group IB metals (Cu and Ag) over titania. This discovery highlights the general nature of the classical SMSI and unlocks the development of thermochemically stable IB metal catalysts.
