4,4'-Methyl-enebis[N-(2-hy-droxy-3-meth-oxy-benzyl-idene)-2,6-diiso-propyl-aniline].

ABSTRACT: In the V-shaped title Schiff base, C₄₁H₅₀N₂O₄, the planes of the benzene rings of the central di-phenyl-methane unit make a dihedral angle of 70.40 (5)°, whereas the planes of the neighbouring benzene and ortho-vanilin rings are twisted with respect to one another by dihedral angles of 75.76 (5) and 73.89 (6)°. The Schiff base displays intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds and weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O contacts.

Project description:In the title compound, C13H10FNO, the benzene ring planes are inclined at an angle of 50.52 (8)°. A characteristic of aromatic Schiff bases with N-aryl substituents is that the terminal phenyl rings are twisted relative to the plane of the HC=N link between them. In this case, the HC=N unit makes dihedral angles of 10.6 (2) and 40.5 (2)° with the hy-droxy-benzene and fluro-benzene rings, respectively. In the crystal, O-H⋯N and C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of chains along the c- and b-axis directions, respectively. C-H⋯π contacts link mol-ecules along a and these contacts combine to generate a three-dimensional network with mol-ecules stacked along the b-axis direction.

A characteristic of aromatic Schiff bases with N-aryl substituents is that the terminal phenyl rings are twisted relative to the HC=N plane. In this case, the HC=N unit makes dihedral angles of 11.1 (4) and 38.5 (3)° with the hy-droxy-benzene and bromo-benzene rings, respectively. In the crystal, the molecules are linked by O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds to form infinite (C8) chains along the b axis.

Project description:The title compounds 4,4'-methyl-enebis(2,6-di-ethyl-aniline) (C21H30N2, 1) and 4,4'-methyl-enebis(3-chloro-2,6-di-ethyl-aniline) (C21H28Cl2N2, 2) are of significant inter-est as curing agents for a wide range of resins and as building blocks for sterically demanding compounds in the synthesis of ligands for catalysis. This paper describes their synthesis and the preparation of single crystals, with their structures determined through single-crystal X-ray analysis. The presence of the chlorine substituent slightly affects the twist angle between the two aromatic components. The mol-ecules of compound 1 form a network structure through inter-molecular N-H⋯N bonds and C-H⋯π inter-actions, while in the crystal structure of compound 2, the mol-ecules are assembled solely through N-H⋯π inter-actions. Consequently, despite their chemical similarity, it is the precise structural data that enables us to explain their differing reactivity and opens up the possibility of evaluating steric properties for the development of new materials and ligands.

Project description:There are two geometrically different mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(14)H(9)Cl(2)NO(3). The 5-amino-2-hy-droxy-benzoic acid units [r.m.s. deviations of 0.0323 and 0.0414 Å] and 2,6-dichloro-benzaldehyde groups [r.m.s. deviations of 0.0285 and 0.0226 Å] are roughly planar and oriented at dihedral angles of 11.69 (13) and 83.12 (6)° in the two mol-ecules. An intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond completes an S(6) ring motif in each mol-ecule. The two mol-ecules form dimers with each other through inter-molecular O-H⋯N and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, completing an R(2) (2)(8) ring motif. The dimers are inter-linked via inter-molecular O-H⋯N and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming polymeric sheets.
