Evidence of the unidimensional structure of mind perception.

ABSTRACT: The last decade has witnessed intense interest in how people perceive the minds of other entities (humans, non-human animals, and non-living objects and forces) and how this perception impacts behavior. Despite the attention paid to the topic, the psychological structure of mind perception-that is, the underlying properties that account for variance across judgements of entities-is not clear and extant reports conflict in terms of how to understand the structure. In the present research, we evaluated the psychological structure of mind perception by having participants evaluate a wide array of human, non-human animal, and non-animal entities. Using an entirely within-participants design, varied measurement approaches, and data-driven analyses, four studies demonstrated that mind perception is best conceptualized along a single dimension.

Distortions of mind perception in psychopathology.

Project description:It has long been known that psychopathology can influence social perception, but a 2D framework of mind perception provides the opportunity for an integrative understanding of some disorders. We examined the covariation of mind perception with three subclinical syndromes--autism-spectrum disorder, schizotypy, and psychopathy--and found that each presents a unique mind-perception profile. Autism-spectrum disorder involves reduced perception of agency in adult humans. Schizotypy involves increased perception of both agency and experience in entities generally thought to lack minds. Psychopathy involves reduced perception of experience in adult humans, children, and animals. Disorders are differentially linked with the over- or underperception of agency and experience in a way that helps explain their real-world consequences.

Autism attenuates the perception of the mind-body divide.

Project description:People are intuitive Dualists-they tacitly consider the mind as ethereal, distinct from the body. Here we ask whether Dualism emerges naturally from the conflicting core principles that guide reasoning about objects, on the one hand, and about the minds of agents (theory of mind, ToM), on the other. To address this question, we explore Dualist reasoning in autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-a congenital disorder known to compromise ToM. If Dualism arises from ToM, then ASD ought to attenuate Dualism and promote Physicalism. In line with this prediction, Experiment 1 shows that, compared to controls, people with ASD are more likely to view psychological traits as embodied-as likely to manifest in a replica of one's body. Experiment 2 demonstrates that, unlike controls, people with ASD do not consider thoughts as disembodied-as persistent in the afterlife (upon the body's demise). If ASD promotes the perception of the psyche as embodied, and if (per Essentialism) embodiment suggests innateness, then ASD should further promote Nativism-this bias is shown in Experiment 3. Finally, Experiment 4 demonstrates that, in neurotypical (NT) participants, difficulties with ToM correlate with Physicalism. These results are the first to show that ASD attenuates Dualist reasoning and to link Dualism to ToM. These conclusions suggest that the mind-body distinction might be natural for people to entertain.

The Power of mind: Blocking visual perception by hypnosis.

Project description:The present study investigated the effects of suggestion on the processing of visual stimuli. Participants counted rare visual stimuli presented on a screen, once during a hypnosis condition where they were suggested that their vision of the screen is blocked by a virtual wooden board in front of their eyes and once during a control condition without suggestion. In the hypnosis condition, counting performance was about 20% worse than in the control condition. At the same time, the P3b amplitude of the event-related brain potential was about 37% reduced. Smaller P3b amplitudes were significantly associated with deficient counting performance, and this effect was largest in participants who reported the blockade as real. In contrast, earlier brain responses (N1, P2) that reflect basic processing of the visual stimuli were not affected by the suggested blockade. We conclude that the suggestion of the blockade affects later stages of visual perception, leaving early processes intact. This illustrates the impact of suggestions and the power of mind.

The Medusa effect reveals levels of mind perception in pictures.

Project description:Throughout our species history, humans have created pictures. The resulting picture record reveals an overwhelming preference for depicting things with minds. This preference suggests that pictures capture something of the mind that is significant to us, albeit at reduced potency. Here, we show that abstraction dims the perceived mind, even within the same picture. In a series of experiments, people were perceived as more real, and higher in both Agency (ability to do) and Experience (ability to feel), when they were presented as pictures than when they were presented as pictures of pictures. This pattern persisted across different tasks and even when comparators were matched for identity and image size. Viewers spontaneously discriminated between different levels of abstraction during eye tracking and were less willing to share money with a more abstracted person in a dictator game. Given that mind perception underpins moral judgement, our findings suggest that depicted persons will receive greater or lesser ethical consideration, depending on the level of abstraction.

Mind Perception of Robots Varies With Their Economic Versus Social Function.

Project description:While robots were traditionally built to achieve economic efficiency and financial profits, their roles are likely to change in the future with the aim to provide social support and companionship. In this research, we examined whether the robot's proposed function (social vs. economic) impacts judgments of mind and moral treatment. Studies 1a and 1b demonstrated that robots with social function were perceived to possess greater ability for emotional experience, but not cognition, compared to those with economic function and whose function was not mentioned explicitly. Study 2 replicated this finding and further showed that low economic value reduced ascriptions of cognitive capacity, whereas high social value resulted in increased emotion perception. In Study 3, robots with high social value were more likely to be afforded protection from harm, and such effect was related to levels of ascribed emotional experience. Together, the findings demonstrate a dissociation between function type (social vs. economic) and ascribed mind (emotion vs. cognition). In addition, the two types of functions exert asymmetric influences on the moral treatment of robots. Theoretical and practical implications for the field of social psychology and human-computer interaction are discussed.

Are Utilitarian/Deontological Preferences Unidimensional?

Project description:Utilitarian versus deontological inclinations have been studied extensively in the field of moral psychology. However, the field has been lacking a thorough psychometric evaluation of the most commonly used measures. In this paper, we examine the factorial structure of an often used set of 12 moral dilemmas purportedly measuring utilitarian/deontological moral inclinations. We ran three different studies (and a pilot) to investigate the issue. In Study 1, we used standard Exploratory Factor Analysis and Schmid-Leimann (g factor) analysis; results of which informed the a priori single-factor model for our second study. Results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis in Study 2 were replicated in Study 3. Finally, we ran a weak invariance analysis between the models of Study 2 and 3, concluding that there is no significant difference between factor loading in these studies. We find reason to support a single-factor model of utilitarian/deontological inclinations. In addition, certain dilemmas have consistent error covariance, suggesting that this should be taken into consideration in future studies. In conclusion, three studies, pilot and an invariance analysis, systematically suggest the following. (1) No item needs to be dropped from the scale. (2) There is a unidimensional structure for utilitarian/deontological preferences behind the most often used dilemmas in moral psychology, suggesting a single latent cognitive mechanism. (3) The most common set of dilemmas in moral psychology can be successfully used as a unidimensional measure of utilitarian/deontological moral inclinations, but would benefit from using weighted averages over simple averages. (4) Consideration should be given to dilemmas describing infants.

Mind the Depth: Visual Perception of Shapes Is Better in Peripersonal Space.

Project description:Closer objects are invariably perceived as bigger than farther ones and are therefore easier to detect and discriminate. This is so deeply grounded in our daily experience that no question has been raised as to whether the advantage for near objects depends on other features (e.g., depth itself). In a series of five experiments ( N = 114), we exploited immersive virtual environments and visual illusions (i.e., Ponzo) to probe humans' perceptual abilities in depth and, specifically, in the space closely surrounding our body, termed peripersonal space. We reversed the natural distance scaling of size in favor of the farther object, which thus appeared bigger, to demonstrate a persistent shape-discrimination advantage for close objects. Psychophysical modeling further suggested a sigmoidal trend for this benefit, mirroring that found for multisensory estimates of peripersonal space. We argue that depth is a fundamental, yet overlooked, dimension of human perception and that future studies in vision and perception should be depth aware.

COMMON AND DISTINCT NEURAL CORRELATES OF SOCIAL INTERACTION PERCEPTION AND THEORY OF MIND.

Project description:Social cognition spans from perceiving agents and their interactions to making inferences based on theory of mind (ToM). Despite their frequent co-occurrence in real life, the commonality and distinction between social interaction perception and ToM at behavioral and neural levels remain unclear. Here, participants (N = 231) provided moment-by-moment ratings of four text and four audio narratives on social interactions and ToM engagement. Social interaction and ToM ratings were reliable (split-half r = .98 and .92, respectively) but only modestly correlated across time (r = .32). In a second sample (N = 90), we analyzed co-variation between normative social interaction and ToM ratings and functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) activity during narrative reading (text) and listening (audio). Social interaction perception and ToM activity maps generalized across text and audio presentation (r = .83 and .57 between unthresholded t maps, respectively). When ToM was held constant, merely perceiving social interactions activated all regions canonically associated with ToM under both modalities (FDR q < .01), including temporoparietal junction, superior temporal sulcus, medial prefrontal cortex, and precuneus. ToM activated these regions as well, indicating a shared, modality-general system for social interaction perception and ToM. Furthermore, ToM uniquely engaged lateral occipitotemporal cortex, left anterior intraparietal sulcus, and right premotor cortex. These results imply that perceiving social interactions automatically engages regions implicated in mental state inferences. In addition, ToM is distinct from social interaction perception in its recruitment of regions associated with higher-level cognitive processes, including action understanding and executive functions.

It's the AI's fault, not mine: Mind perception increases blame attribution to AI.

Project description:Can artificial intelligences (AIs) be held accountable for moral transgressions? Current research examines how attributing human mind to AI influences the blame assignment to both the AI and the humans involved in real-world moral transgressions. We hypothesized that perceiving AI as having a human mind-like qualities would increase moral blame directed towards AI while decreasing blame attribution to human agents involved. Through three empirical studies-utilizing correlational methods with real-life inspired scenarios in Study 1 and employing experimental manipulations in Studies 2 and 3-our findings demonstrate that perceiving mind in AI increases the likelihood of blaming AIs for moral transgressions. We also explore whether it also diminishes the perceived culpability of human stakeholders, particularly the involved company. Our findings highlight the significance of AI mind perception as a key determinant in increasing blame attribution towards AI in instances of moral transgressions. Additionally, our research sheds light on the phenomenon of moral scapegoating, cautioning against the potential misuse of AI as a scapegoat for moral transgressions. These results emphasize the imperative of further investigating blame attribution assigned to AI entities.
