This study presents a database of joint angles, moments, and forces of the lower extremity from distance running at a submaximal speed in recreational runners. Twenty recreational runners participated in two experimental sessions, specifically pre and post a 5k treadmill run, with a synchronous collection of markers trajectories and ground reaction forces for both limbs in walking and running trials. Project description:The Xsens Link motion capture suit has become a popular tool in investigating 3D running kinematics based on wearable inertial measurement units outside of the laboratory. In this study, we investigated the reliability of Xsens-based lower extremity joint angles during unconstrained running on stable (asphalt) and unstable (woodchip) surfaces within and between five different testing days in a group of 17 recreational runners (8 female, 9 male). Specifically, we determined the within-day and between-day intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and minimal detectable changes (MDCs) with respect to discrete ankle, knee, and hip joint angles. When comparing runs within the same day, the investigated Xsens-based joint angles generally showed good to excellent reliability (median ICCs > 0.9). Between-day reliability was generally lower than the within-day estimates: Initial hip, knee, and ankle angles in the sagittal plane showed good reliability (median ICCs > 0.88), while ankle and hip angles in the frontal plane showed only poor to moderate reliability (median ICCs 0.38-0.83). The results were largely unaffected by the surface. In conclusion, within-day adaptations in lower-extremity running kinematics can be captured with the Xsens Link system. Our data on between-day reliability suggest caution when trying to capture longitudinal adaptations, specifically for ankle and hip joint angles in the frontal plane.

Project description:BackgroundPercutaneous osseointegrated (OI) docking of prosthetic limbs returns loading directly to the residual bone of individuals with amputations. Lower limb diaphyseal biomechanics have not been studied during the wide range of daily activities performed by individuals with lower extremity amputations; therefore, little is known about the loads experienced at the bone-endoprosthetic interface of a percutaneous OI device.Research questionDoes residual limb length and/or gender influence loading magnitudes in the diaphysis of the femur or tibia during daily activities?MethodsThis observational study used motion capture data from 40 non-amputee volunteers performing nine activities ranging from low to high demand, to virtually simulate residual limbs of amputees. To simulate diaphyseal bone loading in individuals with lower limb amputations, virtual joints were defined during post-processing at 25, 50, and 75 % of residual limb length of both the femur and the tibia, representing six clinically relevant residual limb lengths for OI device placement. Peak axial distractive and compressive forces, torsional moments, and bending moments were calculated for each activity. Comparisons were made between genders and between different levels of the simulated residual limb.ResultsFor simulated above and below knee amputations, short residual limbs showed the highest average bending, torsion, and axial distractive loads, while axial compressive loads were highest for long residual limbs. Absolute maxima for all subjects showed this same trend, except in below knee torsion, where 75 % residual tibia length showed the maximum. The highest demand activities yielding peaks in all directions were cutting with right leg planted, jump, run, and fall.SignificanceOverall, individuals with shorter residual limbs experienced higher diaphyseal forces. This should be taken into consideration during surgical implantation of percutaneous OI devices where residual limb length can potentially be shortened, and during rehabilitation of percutaneous OI patients.

Project description:This study presents an investigation of the changes in foot posture, joint kinematics, joint moments and joint contact forces in the lower extremity following a 5 k treadmill run. A relationship between knee and ankle joint loading and foot posture index (FPI) is developed. Twenty recreational male heel-strike runners participated in this study. All participants had a history of running exercise and were free from lower extremity injuries and foot deformities. Foot posture was assessed from a six-item FPI to quantitatively classify high supination to high pronation foot poses. The FPI is scored using a combination of observations and foot palpations. The three-dimensional marker trajectories, ground reaction force and surface electromyography (EMG) were recorded at pre and post-gait sessions conducted over-ground and 5 k running was conducted on a treadmill. Joint kinematics, joint moments and joint contact forces were computed in OpenSim. Simulated EMG activations were compared against experimental EMG to validate the model. A paired sample t-test was conducted using a 1D statistical parametric mapping method computed temporally. Hip joint moments and contact forces increased during initial foot contact following 5 k running. Knee abduction moment and superior-inferior knee contact force increased, whereas the knee extension moment decreased. Ankle plantarflexion moment and ankle contact forces increased during stance. FPI was found to be moderately correlated with peak knee and ankle moments. Recreational male runners presented increased static foot pronation after 5 k treadmill running. These findings suggest that following mid distance running foot pronation may be an early indicator of increased lower limb joint loading. Furthermore, the FPI may be used to quantify the changes in knee and ankle joint moments.

Project description:Inertial measurement units (IMU) are increasingly utilized to capture biomechanical measures such as joint kinematics outside traditional biomechanics laboratories. These wearable sensors have been proven to help clinicians and engineers monitor rehabilitation progress, improve prosthesis development, and record human performance in a variety of settings. The Valor IMU aims to offer a portable motion capture alternative to provide reliable and accurate joint kinematics when compared to industry gold standard optical motion capture cameras. However, IMUs can have disturbances in their measurements caused by magnetic fields, drift, and inappropriate calibration routines. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to validate the joint angles captured by the Valor IMU in comparison to an optical motion capture system across a variety of movements. Our findings showed mean absolute differences between Valor IMU and Vicon motion capture across all subjects' joint angles. The tasks ranged from 1.81 degrees to 17.46 degrees, the root mean squared errors ranged from 1.89 degrees to 16.62 degrees, and interclass correlation coefficient agreements ranged from 0.57 to 0.99. The results in the current paper further promote the usage of the IMU system outside traditional biomechanical laboratories. Future examinations of this IMU should include smaller, modular IMUs with non-slip Velcro bands and further validation regarding transverse plane joint kinematics such as joint internal/external rotations.

Project description:BackgroundTrunk lean angle is an underrepresented biomechanical variable for modulating and redistributing lower extremity joint loading and potentially reducing the risk of running-related overuse injuries. The purpose of this study was to systematically alter the trunk lean angle in distance running using an auditory real-time feedback approach and to derive dose-response relationships between sagittal plane trunk lean angle and lower extremity (cumulative) joint loading to guide overuse load management in clinical practice.MethodsThirty recreational runners (15 males and 15 females) ran at a constant speed of 2.5 m/s at 5 systematically varied trunk lean conditions on a force-instrumented treadmill while kinematic and kinetic data were captured.ResultsA change in trunk lean angle from -2° (extension) to 28° (flexion) resulted in a systematic increase in stance phase angular impulse, cumulative impulse, and peak moment at the hip joint in the sagittal and transversal plane. In contrast, a systematic decrease in these parameters at the knee joint in the sagittal plane and the hip joint in the frontal plane was found (p < 0.001). Linear fitting revealed that with every degree of anterior trunk leaning, the cumulative hip joint extension loading increases by 3.26 Nm·s/kg/1000 m, while simultaneously decreasing knee joint extension loading by 1.08 Nm·s/kg/1000 m.ConclusionTrunk leaning can reduce knee joint loading and hip joint abduction loading, at the cost of hip joint loading in the sagittal and transversal planes during distance running. Modulating lower extremity joint loading by altering trunk lean angle is an effective strategy to redistribute joint load between/within the knee and hip joints. When implementing anterior trunk leaning in clinical practice, the increased demands on the hip musculature, dynamic stability, and the potential trade-off with running economy should be considered.

Project description:BackgroundThe goals of this study were (1) to present the set of data evaluating running biomechanics (kinematics and kinetics), including data on running habits, demographics, and levels of muscle strength and flexibility made available at Figshare (DOI: 10.6084/m9.figshare.4543435); and (2) to examine the effect of running speed on selected gait-biomechanics variables related to both running injuries and running economy.MethodsThe lower-extremity kinematics and kinetics data of 28 regular runners were collected using a three-dimensional (3D) motion-capture system and an instrumented treadmill while the subjects ran at 2.5 m/s, 3.5 m/s, and 4.5 m/s wearing standard neutral shoes.ResultsA dataset comprising raw and processed kinematics and kinetics signals pertaining to this experiment is available in various file formats. In addition, a file of metadata, including demographics, running characteristics, foot-strike patterns, and muscle strength and flexibility measurements is provided. Overall, there was an effect of running speed on most of the gait-biomechanics variables selected for this study. However, the foot-strike patterns were not affected by running speed.DiscussionSeveral applications of this dataset can be anticipated, including testing new methods of data reduction and variable selection; for educational purposes; and answering specific research questions. This last application was exemplified in the study's second objective.

Project description:BackgroundThe development of computer vision technology has enabled the use of markerless movement tracking for biomechanical analysis. Recent research has reported the feasibility of markerless systems in motion analysis but has yet to fully explore their utility for capturing faster movements, such as running. Applied studies using markerless systems in clinical and sports settings are still lacking. Thus, the present study compared running biomechanics estimated by marker-based and markerless systems. Given running speed not only affects sports performance but is also associated with clinical injury prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation, we aimed to investigate the effects of speed on the comparison of estimated lower extremity joint moments and powers between markerless and marker-based technologies during treadmill running as a concurrent validating study.MethodsKinematic data from marker-based/markerless technologies were collected, along with ground reaction force data, from 16 young adults running on an instrumented treadmill at 3 speeds: 2.24 m/s, 2.91 m/s, and 3.58 m/s (5.0 miles/h, 6.5 miles/h, and 8.0 miles/h). Sagittal plane moments and powers of the hip, knee, and ankle were calculated by inverse dynamic methods. Time series analysis and statistical parametric mapping were used to determine system differences.ResultsCompared to the marker-based system, the markerless system estimated increased lower extremity joint kinetics with faster speed during the swing phase in most cases.ConclusionDespite the promising application of markerless technology in clinical settings, systematic markerless overestimation requires focused attention. Based on segment pose estimations, the centers of mass estimated by markerless technologies were farther away from the relevant distal joint centers, which led to greater joint moments and powers estimates by markerless vs. marker-based systems. The differences were amplified by running speed.

Project description:BackgroundNormative foot kinematic and kinetic data with different walking speeds will benefit rehabilitation programs and improving gait performance. The purpose of this study was to analyze foot kinematics and kinetics differences between slow walking (SW), normal walking (NW) and fast walking (FW) of healthy subjects.MethodsA total of 10 healthy male subjects participated in this study; they were asked to carry out walks at a self-selected speed. After measuring and averaging the results of NW, the subjects were asked to perform a 25% slower and 25% faster walk, respectively. Temporal-spatial parameters, kinematics of the tibia (TB), hindfoot (HF), forefoot (FF) and hallux (HX), and ground reaction forces (GRFs) were recorded while the subjects walked at averaged speeds of 1.01 m/s (SW), 1.34 m/s (NW), and 1.68 m/s (FW).ResultsHindfoot relative to tibia (HF/TB) and forefoot relative to hindfoot (FF/HF) dorsiflexion (DF) increased in FW, while hallux relative to forefoot (HX/FF) DF decreased. Increased peak eversion (EV) and peak external rotation (ER) in HF/TB were observed in FW with decreased peak supination (SP) in FF/HF. GRFs were increased significantly with walking speed. The peak values of the knee and ankle moments in the sagittal and frontal planes significantly increased during FW compared with SW and NW.DiscussionLimited HF/TB and FF/HF motion of SW was likely compensated for increased HX/FF DF. Although small angle variation in HF/TB EV and FF/HF SP during FW may have profound effects for foot kinetics. Higher HF/TB ER contributed to the FF push-off the ground while the center of mass (COM) progresses forward in FW, therefore accompanied by higher FF/HF abduction in FW. Increased peak vertical GRF in FW may affected by decreased stance duration time, the biomechanical mechanism maybe the change in vertical COM height and increase leg stiffness. Walking speed changes accompanied with modulated sagittal plane ankle moments to alter the braking GRF during loading response. The findings of foot kinematics, GRFs, and lower limb joint moments among healthy males may set a reference to distinguish abnormal and pathological gait patterns.

Project description:To enhance running performance in heel-toe running, a leaf spring structured midsole shoe (LEAF) has recently been introduced. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a LEAF compared to a standard foam midsole shoe (FOAM) on joint mechanics and lower limb muscle forces in overground running. Nine male long-distance heel strike runners ran on an indoor track at 3.0 ± 0.2 m/s with LEAF and FOAM shoes. Running kinematics and kinetics were recorded during the stance phase. Absorbed and generated energy (negative and positive work) of the hip, knee and ankle joint as well as muscle forces of selected lower limb muscles were determined using a musculoskeletal model. A significant reduction in energy absorption at the hip joint as well as energy generation at the ankle joint was found for LEAF compared to FOAM. The mean lower limb muscle forces of the m. soleus, m. gastrocnemius lateralis and m. gastrocnemius medialis were significantly reduced for LEAF compared to FOAM. Furthermore, m. biceps femoris showed a trend of reduction in running with LEAF. The remaining lower limb muscles analyzed (m. gluteus maximus, m. rectus femoris, m. vastus medialis, m. vastus lateralis, m. tibialis anterior) did not reveal significant differences between the shoe conditions. The findings of this study indicate that LEAF positively influenced the energy balance in running by reducing lower limb muscle forces compared to FOAM. In this way, LEAF could contribute to an overall increased running performance in heel-toe running.

Project description:Balance recovery after tripping often requires an active adaptation of foot placement. Thus far, few attempts have been made to actively assist forward foot placement for balance recovery employing wearable devices. This study aims to explore the possibilities of active forward foot placement through two paradigms of actuation: assistive moments exerted with the reaction moments either internal or external to the human body, namely 'joint' moments and 'free' moments, respectively. Both paradigms can be applied to manipulate the motion of segments of the body (e.g., the shank or thigh), but joint actuators also exert opposing reaction moments on neighbouring body segments, altering posture and potentially inhibiting tripping recovery. We therefore hypothesised that a free moment paradigm is more effective in assisting balance recovery following tripping. The simulation software SCONE was used to simulate gait and tripping over various ground-fixed obstacles during the early swing phase. To aid forward foot placement, joint moments and free moments were applied either on the thigh to augment hip flexion or on the shank to augment knee extension. Two realizations of joint moments on the hip were simulated, with the reaction moment applied to either the pelvis or the contralateral thigh. The simulation results show that assisting hip flexion with either actuation paradigm on the thigh can result in full recovery of gait with a margin of stability and leg kinematics closely matching the unperturbed case. However, when assisting knee extension with moments on the shank, free moment effectively assist balance but joint moments with the reaction moment on the thigh do not. For joint moments assisting hip flexion, placement of the reaction moment on the contralateral thigh was more effective in achieving the desired limb dynamics than placing the reaction on the pelvis. Poor choice of placement of reaction moments may therefore have detrimental consequences for balance recovery, and removing them entirely (i.e., free moment) could be a more effective and reliable alternative. These results challenge conventional assumptions and may inform the design and development of a new generation of minimalistic wearable devices to promote balance during gait.
