Positive legacies of severe droughts in the Inner Mongolia grassland.

ABSTRACT: Global change-induced extreme droughts are increasing in grasslands worldwide, and drought legacies may greatly affect the responses of grassland ecosystems to these changes. However, it remains poorly understood whether and how severe droughts have a positive legacy effect on grassland productivity. By combining a 4-year precipitation manipulation experiment with a 40-year observational study in a semiarid grassland, we showed that extreme droughts could create strong positive legacies on community productivity and that such legacies could last for multiple years. The mechanism behind this was the coupled effect of the drought-induced increase in annuals and the favorable precipitation pattern that facilitated the flourishing of annuals in subsequent years. This study provides experimental and observational evidence for positive drought legacies and reveals their underlying mechanisms. Our findings suggest that positive drought legacies should be incorporated into Earth system models to better predict the impact of extreme droughts on grassland ecosystems.

Project description:Increasing frequency and intensity of climate extremes have profound impacts on grassland biodiversity functioning and stability. Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) net primary productivity (NPP) data and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index, we assessed the response of NPP to growing-season and annual climate extremes and time-lag of climatic conditions across four grassland types (meadow steppe, typical steppe, steppe desert, and desert steppe) in Inner Mongolia, China from the period 2000 to 2019. Results showed that annual NPP varied significantly across four grassland types, with the highest NPP in meadow steppe and the lowest in desert steppe. Annual NPP of all grassland types increased over the past 20 years, but NPP in meadow steppe and typical steppe decreased for the period 2012-2019. Irrespective of grassland type, the 1- and 2-month time-lag of climatic conditions showed significant effects on annual NPP. Growing-season climate was found the better predictor of annual NPP in all grassland types than the annual climate. Compared with growing-season normal climates, annual NPP was lowest in extreme dry events in all grasslands, while highest in extreme wet events in meadow steppe and typical steppe, and in moderate wet events in steppe desert and desert steppe. Typical steppe and steppe desert are highly vulnerable to the increasing intensity of climate extremes, as we found that the losses of NPP in these grasslands in extreme dry were almost double than that of moderate dry events. Surprisingly, for meadow steppe and desert steppe, the losses of NPP for both moderate and extreme dry events were almost the same, which highlights that a low-intensity drought may have profound impacts on the annual NPP of these grasslands. The study provides the key insight in scientific basis to improve our understanding of the effects of climate extremes on grassland NPP, which is critical to sustainable management of grassland and maintain ecosystem stability.

Project description:Enclosure and grazing can significantly change the turnover of nitrogen in grassland soil. Changes of soil nitrogen mineralization and ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms caused by enclosure in different grazing intensities (about 30 years of grazing history) grassland, however, has rarely been reported. We selected the grassland sites with high and medium grazing intensity (HG and MG, 4 and 2 sheep ha-1, respectively) and had them enclosed (45 × 55 m) in 2005 while outside the enclosure was continuously grazed year-round. A two factorial study was designed: grazing intensity (MG and HG sites) and enclosure (fence and non-fence). Nitrogen mineralization was detected through a laboratory incubation experiment. The abundance and community structure of soil ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were analyzed using quantitative PCR (q-PCR), terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP), cloning, and sequencing. Results showed that compared with MG site, at HG site the AOB abundance and community structure of AOB changed significantly while the AOA abundance and community structure did not change obviously. Enclosure significantly decreased the cumulative mineralized N, N mineralization rate, the abundance of AOB and the AOB community structure at the HG site, while at MG site, enclosure did not change these parameters. Potential nitrification rate (PNR) was positively correlated with the abundance of AOA and AOB at the MG and HG sites, respectively. The abundance of AOA was significantly correlated with soil pH; however, AOB abundance was significantly correlated with soil available N, total N, C/N ratio, pH, etc. The phylogenetic analysis showed that Nitrososphaeraceae and Nitrosomonadaceae were the dominant AOA and AOB, respectively. Totally, the responses of AOB and AOA mainly were associated to changes in soil physicochemical properties caused by different intensity grazing; AOB and AOA may be the dominant functional players in ammonia oxidation processes at HG and MG site, respectively.
