ABSTRACT: Pioneered by the success on active transport of ions across membranes in 1980 using the regulation of the binding properties of crown ethers with covalently linked photoisomerizable units, extensive studies on the movements by using varied interactions between moving objects and environments have been reported. Photoinduced movements of various objects ranging from molecules, polymers to microscopic particles were discussed from the aspects of the driving for the movements, materials design to achieve the movements and systems design to see and to utilize the movements are summarized in this review.

Light-induced displacement of PLASTID MOVEMENT IMPAIRED1 precedes light-dependent chloroplast movements.

Project description:Light-dependent chloroplast movements are an actin-dependent cellular response to changes in the light environment that help plants maximize photosynthetic potential and reduce photodamage. Over a dozen proteins are known to be required for normal chloroplast movements, but the molecular mechanisms regulating the transformation of light perception into chloroplast motility are not fully understood. Here, we show that in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) the actin-bundling plasma membrane-associated proteins THRUMIN1, PLASTID MOVEMENT IMPAIRED1 (PMI1), and KINESIN-LIKE PROTEIN FOR ACTIN-BASED CHLOROPLAST MOVEMENT1 (KAC1) interact through the 14-3-3 proteins KAPPA and OMEGA. We also show that the interaction of PMI1 with 14-3-3 KAPPA and OMEGA is regulated by blue light activation of the Phototropin2 photoreceptor. Live-cell confocal microscopy revealed light-induced dynamic changes in the cellular localizations of PMI1 and KAC1. In particular, PMI1 was relocated away from irradiated areas of the plasma membrane in less than a minute after blue light exposure, consistent with PMI1 playing a critical role in initiating light-dependent chloroplast movements. We present a modified conceptual model for high light-dependent chloroplast movements in which PMI1 acts as the mobile signal that initiates a coordinated sequence of changes in protein-protein and protein-plasma membrane interactions that initiate the chloroplast movement response and determine where in the cell chloroplasts are able to anchor to the plasma membrane.

Abnormal Eye Movements in Parkinsonism and Movement Disorders.

Project description:Abnormal eye movements are commonly observed in movement disorders. Ocular motility examination should include bedside evaluation and laboratory recording of ocular misalignment, involuntary eye movements, including nystagmus and saccadic intrusions/oscillations, triggered nystagmus, saccades, smooth pursuit (SP), and the vestibulo-ocular reflex. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) mostly show hypometric saccades, especially for the selfpaced saccades, and impaired SP. Early vertical saccadic palsy is characteristic of progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson's syndrome. Patients with cortico-basal syndrome typically show a delayed onset of saccades. Downbeat and gaze-evoked nystagmus and hypermetric saccades are characteristic ocular motor findings in ataxic disorders due to cerebellar dysfunction. In this review, we discuss various ocular motor findings in movement disorders, including PD and related disorders, ataxic syndromes, and hyperkinetic movement disorders. Systemic evaluation of the ocular motor functions may provide valuable information for early detection and monitoring of movement disorders, despite an overlap in the abnormal eye movements among different movement disorders.

Joint species movement modeling: how do traits influence movements?

Project description:Joint species distribution modeling has enabled researchers to move from species-level to community-level analyses, leading to statistically more efficient and ecologically more informative use of data. Here, we propose joint species movement modeling (JSMM) as an analogous approach that enables inferring both species- and community-level movement parameters from multispecies movement data. The species-level movement parameters are modeled as a function of species traits and phylogenetic relationships, allowing one to ask how species traits influence movements, and whether phylogenetically related species are similar in their movement behavior. We illustrate the modeling framework with two contrasting case studies: a stochastic redistribution model for direct observations of bird movements and a spatially structured diffusion model for capture-recapture data on moth movements. In both cases, the JSMM identified several traits that explain differences in movement behavior among species, such as movement rate increasing with body size in both birds and moths. We show with simulations that the JSMM approach increases precision of species-specific parameter estimates by borrowing information from other species that are closely related or have similar traits. The JSMM framework is applicable for many kinds of data, and it facilitates a mechanistic understanding of the causes and consequences of interspecific variation in movement behavior.

Restricted truncal sagittal movements of rapid eye movement behaviour disorder.

Project description:Unlike sleep-walkers, patients with rapid-eye-movement-behaviour disorder (RBD) rarely leave the bed during the re-enactment of their dreams. RBD movements may be independent of spatial co-ordinates of the 'outside-world', and instead rely on (allocentric) brain-generated virtual space-maps, as evident by patients' limited truncal/axial movements. To confirm this, a semiology analysis of video-polysomnography records of 38 RBD patients was undertaken and paradoxically restricted truncal/thoraco-lumbar movements during complex dream re-enactments demonstrated.

Classification of Articulator Movements and Movement Direction from Sensorimotor Cortex Activity.

Project description:For people suffering from severe paralysis, communication can be difficult or nearly impossible. Technology systems called brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are being developed to assist these people with communication by using their brain activity to control a computer without any muscle activity. To benefit the development of BCIs that employ neural activity related to speech, we investigated if neural activity patterns related to different articulator movements can be distinguished from each other. We recorded with electrocorticography (ECoG), the neural activity related to different articulator movements in 4 epilepsy patients and classified which articulator participants moved based on the sensorimotor cortex activity patterns. The same was done for different movement directions of a single articulator, the tongue. In both experiments highly accurate classification was obtained, on average 92% for different articulators and 85% for different tongue directions. Furthermore, the data show that only a small part of the sensorimotor cortex is needed for classification (ca. 1?cm2). We show that recordings from small parts of the sensorimotor cortex contain information about different articulator movements which might be used for BCI control. Our results are of interest for BCI systems that aim to decode neural activity related to (actual or attempted) movements from a contained cortical area.

Positional Change of the Eyeball During Eye Movements: Evidence of Translatory Movement.

Project description:Purpose: To investigate the positional change of the eyeball induced by horizontal and vertical gazing to deduce translatory movement, using three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: In this prospective observational study participants underwent orbital MRI during central, right, left, up, and down gazing. MRI scans were processed using self-developed software; this software enabled 3D MR image reconstruction and the superimposition of reconstructed image sets between different gazes. After acquiring the coordinates of the eyeball centroid in each gaze, the changes in centroid coordinates from central gaze to the other gazes were estimated, and correlations with associated factors were evaluated. Results: The mean distance of centroid movement was 0.69 ± 0.27 mm in abduction, 0.68 ± 0.27 mm in adduction, 0.43 ± 0.23 mm in elevation, and 0.44 ± 0.19 mm in depression. The mean angle of centroid movement in horizontal gaze, measured in terms of the movement of the left eye centroid in the axial plane, was 228.7° in abduction and -4.2° in adduction. In vertical gaze, the mean angle of centroid movement was -96.8° in elevation and 101.8° in depression. Axial length and ocular volume were negatively correlated with the distance of centroid movement in horizontal gaze. Conclusions: The position of the eyeball moved in the same direction as the gaze during horizontal gaze, but in the opposite direction during vertical gaze. For accurate eye movement analyses, such as the measurement of the deviation angle in strabismus, translation should be considered in addition to rotation.

Markerless vision-based functional movement screening movements evaluation with deep neural networks.

Project description:The functional movement screen (FMS) test is a seven-test battery used to assess fundamental movement abilities of individuals. It is commonly used to predict sports injuries but relies on clinical expertise and is not suitable for self-examination. This study presents an automatic FMS movement assessment framework using a multi-view deep neural network called MVDNN. The framework combines automatic skeleton extraction with manual feature selection to extract 3D trajectory features of human skeleton joints from two different directions. Three mainstream methods of time-series modeling are then used to learn high-level feature representation from skeleton sequences, and motion features from two views are fused to provide complementary information. Results of public FMS movements dataset demonstrate that our MVDNN outperforms current state-of-the-art methods with an average miF1 score of 0.857, maF1 score of 0.768, and Kappa score of 0.640 over ten runs.

Using the center of pressure movement analysis in evaluating spontaneous movements in infants: a comparative study with general movements assessment.

Project description:BackgroundResearchers have attempted to automate the spontaneous movement assessment and have sought quantitative and objective methods over the past decade. The purpose of the study was to present a quantitative assessment method of spontaneous movement using center-of-pressure (COP) movement analysis.MethodsA total of 101 infants were included in the study. The infants were placed in the supine position on the force plate with the cranial-caudal orientation. In this position, the recording of video and COP movement data were made simultaneously for 3 min. Video recordings were used to observe global and detailed general movement assessment (GMA), and COP time series data were used to obtain quantitative movement parameters.ResultsAccording to the global GMA, 13 infants displayed absent fidgety movements (FMs) and 88 infants displayed normal FMs. The binary logistic regression model indicated significant association between global GMA and COP movement parameters (chi-square = 20.817, p < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of this model were 85% (95% CI: 55-98), 83% (95% CI: 73-90), and 83% (95% CI: 74-90), respectively. The multiple linear regression model showed a significant association between detailed GMA (motor optimality score-revised/MOS-R) and COP movement parameters (F = 10.349, p < 0.001). The MOS-R total score was predicted with a standard error of approximately 1.8 points (6%).ConclusionsThe present study demonstrated the possible avenues for using COP movement analysis to objectively detect the absent FMs and MOS-R total score in clinical settings. Although the method presented in this study requires further validation, it may complement observational GMA and be clinically useful for infant screening purposes, particularly in clinical settings where access to expertise in observational GMA is not available.

Movement-synchronized cerebellum rhythm coordinates multi-joint movements in young and elderly adults.

Project description:Rhythmic limb multi-joint movement like locomotion is controlled by intralimb coordination. Intralimb coordination changes entail immediate alterations in movement patterns and be related with cerebellum function. Synchronized cerebellum activity has known to modulate the frequency of walking, but not known the effect of only intralimb coordination. The purpose of this study was to reveal the effect of synchronized and unsynchronized cerebellum activity on the coordination of multi-joint movements of the unilateral leg in young and elderly people. To achieve our purpose, we applied synchronized and unsynchronized cerebellum transcranial alternating current stimulation during cyclic unilateral multi-joint movement by visual tracking task. The results showed that the reduction in comprehensive synchrony between targets and movements through trials had no significant differences under all stimulus conditions in young and elderly people. However, the reduction in variation of synchronization through trials was significantly smaller under the synchronized transcranial alternating current stimulation condition in both young and elderly groups. Variation of synchronization was remarkably reduced under the synchronized transcranial alternating current stimulation condition for the elderly group. This study showed that movement-synchronized cerebellum activity contributes to reducing fluctuations in movement synchrony by coordinating unilateral multi-joint movements. Moreover, this reduction was remarkable in the elderly group.

Influence of remote pain on movement control and muscle endurance during repetitive movements.

Project description:During fatiguing tasks, people adapt their movement strategies to offset effects of muscle fatigue. Painful stimuli may compete for cognitive resources during this process, impairing fatigue adaptation. This study determined how pain affected movement control and muscle endurance during a repetitive task and how pain catastrophizing moderated these effects. Twenty-two healthy young adults performed timed reaching movements until voluntary exhaustion on two separate days. On 1 day, subjects simultaneously experienced ischemic pain in the contralateral arm. Subjective pain, and effort were recorded at regular intervals. Timing errors, distance and speed were calculated for each movement. Detrended fluctuation analysis was used to quantify temporal persistence in each time series. Subjects made shorter, slower movements during the last compared to the first minute of fatigue on both days (p < 0.001). Deviations in movement speed were corrected faster in the no pain condition compared to the pain condition (p = 0.042), but only early during the condition. Time to fatigue was influenced by pain and the order of testing. Subjects performed the task longer on the second day whether the condition was pain or no pain. This effect was larger when the pain condition was first (3.4 compared to 1.1 min. increase). Subjects with high and low pain catastrophizing responded similarly to the painful stimuli. The results suggest that pain causes people to adopt more conservative movement strategies which can affect the fatigue rate, but these effects depend on familiarity with the painful stimulus and the fatiguing task.
