An efficient class of estimators for finite population mean in the presence of non-response under ranked set sampling (RSS).

ABSTRACT: In this study, we address the problem of estimating the finite population mean when the non-response occurs on the characteristics under study. We propose a class of Rao-regression type estimators when ranked set sampling (RSS) procedure is used to collect the data from non-response group only and from both, the response and non-response groups. The information provided on the auxiliary variable is used at both stages i.e., at designing stage and the estimation stage. Expressions for bias and mean square error of the estimators are obtained up to first order of approximation. A comprehensive simulation study is carried out to observe the performances of the estimators under non-response.

Efficient estimators with categorical ranked set samples: estimation procedures for osteoporosis.

Project description:Ranked set sampling (RSS) design as a cost-effective sampling is a powerful tool in situations where measuring the variable of interest is costly and time-consuming; however, ranking information about sampling units can be obtained easily through inexpensive and easy to measure characteristics at little or no cost. In this paper, we study RSS data for analysis of an ordinal population. First, we compare the problem of non-representative extreme samples under RSS and commonly-used simple random sampling. Using RSS data with tie information, we propose non-parametric and maximum likelihood estimators for population parameters. Through extensive numerical studies, we investigate the effect of various factors including ranking ability, tie generating mechanisms, the number of categories and population setting on the performance of the estimators. Finally, we apply the proposed methods to the bone disorder data to estimate the proportions of patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis status.

Sensitive proportion in ranked set sampling.

Project description:This paper considers the concomitant-based rank set sampling (CRSS) for estimation of the sensitive proportion. It is shown that CRSS procedure provides an unbiased estimator of the population sensitive proportion, and it is always more precise than corresponding sample sensitive proportion (Warner SL (1965)) that based on simple random sampling (SRS) without increasing sampling cost. Additionally, a new estimator based on ratio method is introduced using CRSS protocol, preserving the respondent's confidentiality through a randomizing device. The numerical results of these estimators are obtained by using numerical integration technique. An application to real data is also given to support the methods.

Double extreme-cum-median ranked set sampling.

Project description:Extreme-cum-median ranked set sampling has been developed to address the problem of heterogeneity and outliers / extreme values. Double ranked set sampling has been suggested to obtain more reliable samples using the concept of degree of distinguishability. Dealing with heterogeneous and non-normal populations seems to be an area with a dearth of research. This article endeavors to address this research gap by introducing a new, improved ranked set sampling procedure that combines the aforementioned approaches, which is called double extreme-cum-median ranked set sampling. A simulation study for some symmetric and asymmetric probability distributions has been conducted. The results show that the newly proposed scheme performs better than its competitors under perfect and imperfect ranking, but the best performance has been observed for Weibull distribution with perfect ranking. An empirical study utilizing real-life data following skewed distribution was carried out. The real-life data results align well with the Monte Carlo simulation outcomes. Due to its flexible ranking options, the newly proposed technique is suggested for heterogeneous and non-normal populations.

On partial randomized response model using ranked set sampling.

Project description:In this paper, we propose a partial randomized response technique to collect reliable sensitive data for estimation of population proportion in ranked set sampling (RSS) scheme using auxiliary information. The idea is to increase confidence and (or) co-operation of the respondents by providing them the option of both 'direct' and 'randomized' response for the inquired sensitive question. This option is quite logical because perception of sensitive (insensitive) inquiry can vary among respondents. The properties of the proposed method are discussed and compared with existing randomized response techniques. Cost analysis is also carried out to prove supremacy of the suggested method. Finally, an application to clinical trial on AIDS is included.

Novel logarithmic imputation procedures using multi auxiliary information under ranked set sampling.

Project description:Ranked set sampling (RSS) is known to increase the efficiency of the estimators while comparing it with simple random sampling. The problem of missingness creates a gap in the information that needs to be addressed before proceeding for estimation. Negligible amount of work has been carried out to deal with missingness utilizing RSS. This paper proposes some logarithmic type methods of imputation for the estimation of population mean under RSS using auxiliary information. The properties of the suggested imputation procedures are examined. A simulation study is accomplished to show that the proposed imputation procedures exhibit better results in comparison to some of the existing imputation procedures. Few real applications of the proposed imputation procedures is also provided to generalize the simulation study.

Parameter estimation of Cambanis-type bivariate uniform distribution with Ranked Set Sampling.

Project description:The concept of ranked set sampling (RSS) is applicable whenever ranking on a set of sampling units can be done easily using a judgment method or based on an auxiliary variable. In this paper, we consider a study variable Y correlated with the auxiliary variable X and use it to rank the sampling units. Further (X,Y) is assumed to have Cambanis-type bivariate uniform (CTBU) distribution. We obtain an unbiased estimator of a scale parameter associated with the study variable Y based on different RSS schemes. We perform the efficiency comparison of the proposed estimators numerically. We present the trends in the efficiency performance of estimators under various RSS schemes with respect to parameters through line and surface plots. Further, we develop a Matlab function to simulate data from CTBU distribution and present the performance of proposed estimators through a simulation study. The results developed are implemented to real-life data also.

Estimation methods based on ranked set sampling for the power logarithmic distribution.

Project description:The sample strategy employed in statistical parameter estimation issues has a major impact on the accuracy of the parameter estimates. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a highly helpful technique for gathering data when it is difficult or impossible to quantify the units in a population. A bounded power logarithmic distribution (PLD) has been proposed recently, and it may be used to describe many real-world bounded data sets. In the current work, the three parameters of the PLD are estimated using the RSS technique. A number of conventional estimators using maximum likelihood, minimum spacing absolute log-distance, minimum spacing square distance, Anderson-Darling, minimum spacing absolute distance, maximum product of spacings, least squares, Cramer-von-Mises, minimum spacing square log distance, and minimum spacing Linex distance are investigated. The different estimates via RSS are compared with their simple random sampling (SRS) counterparts. We found that the maximum product spacing estimate appears to be the best option based on our simulation results for the SRS and RSS data sets. Estimates generated from SRS data sets are less efficient than those derived from RSS data sets. The usefulness of the RSS estimators is also investigated by means of a real data example.

Optimized inferences of finite population mean using robust parameters in systematic sampling.

Project description:In this article, we have proposed a generalized estimator for mean estimation by combining the ratio and regression methods of estimation in the presence of auxiliary information using systematic sampling. We incorporated some robust parameters of the auxiliary variable to obtain precise estimates of the proposed estimator. The mathematical expressions for bias and mean square error of proposed the estimator are derived under large sample approximation. Many other generalized ratio and product-type estimators are obtained from the proposed estimator using different choices of scalar constants. Some special cases are also discussed in which the proposed generalized estimator reduces to the usual mean, classical ratio, product, and regression type estimators. Mathematical conditions are obtained for which the proposed estimator will perform more precisely than the challenging estimators mentioned in this article. The efficiency of the proposed estimator is evaluated using four populations. Results showed that the proposed estimator is efficient and useful for survey sampling in comparison to the other existing estimators.

Monitoring of semiconductor manufacturing process on Bayesian AEWMA control chart under paired ranked set sampling schemes.

Project description:Quality control often employs memory-type control charts, including the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) and Shewhart control charts, to identify shifts in the location parameter of a process. This article pioneers a new Bayesian Adaptive EWMA (AEWMA) control chart, built on diverse loss functions (LFs) such as the square error loss function (SELF) and the Linex loss function (LLF). The proposed chart aims to enhance the process of identifying small to moderate as well as significant shifts in the mean, signifying a notable advancement in the field of quality control. These are implemented utilizing an informative prior for both posterior and posterior predictive distributions, employing various paired ranked set sampling (PRSS) schemes. The effectiveness of the suggested chart is appraised using average run length (ARL) and the standard deviation of run length (SDRL). Monte Carlo simulations are employed to contrast the recommended approach against other control charts. The outcomes demonstrate the dignitary performance of the recommended chart in identifying out-of-control signals, especially applying PRSS designs, in comparison to simple random sampling (SRS). Finally, a practical application was conducted in the semiconductor manufacturing context to appraise the efficacy of the offered chart using various paired ranked set sampling strategies. The results reveal that the suggested control chart performed well in capturing the out-of-control signals far better than the already in use control charts. Overall, this study interposes a new technique with diverse LFs and PRSS designs, improving the precision and effectiveness in detecting process mean shifts, thereby contributing to advancements in quality control and process monitoring.

A general class of improved population variance estimators under non-sampling errors using calibrated weights in stratified sampling.

Project description:This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for population variance within a stratified two-phase sampling design. It takes into account random non-response and measurement errors, specifically applying this method to estimate the variance in Gas turbine exhaust pressure data. The study integrates additional information from two highly positively correlated auxiliary variables to develop a general class of estimators tailored for the stratified two-phase sampling scheme. The properties of these estimators, in terms of their biases and mean square errors, have been thoroughly examined and extensively analyzed through numerical and simulation studies. Furthermore, the calibrated weights of the strata are derived. The proposed estimators outperform the natural estimator of population variance. Finally, suitable recommendations have been made for survey statisticians intending to apply these findings to real-life problems.
