Professional identity of Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak: A nation-wide cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT: Practicing in unprecedented working environment and fighting against the COVID-19 crisis influenced the image of nursing in the general population, as well as among nurses themselves. This study aimed to describe the sense of professional identity among Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 outbreak and to explore the relationship between psychological resilience and the sense of professional identity in this cohort. A nationwide online cross-sectional survey was conducted. Nursing students were recruited from 18 Chinese universities. The 10-item Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC-10) evaluated psychological resilience and professional identity was assessed by the Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nursing Students (PIQNS). A total of 6348 respondents had a moderate level of professional identity to nursing (average PIQNS score at 62.02 ± 12.02). About 86% of respondents attributed the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in elevating the nursing image. Psychological resilience was the strongest contributor to professional identity (β = 0.371, P < 0.001). There was a high level of professional identity among Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 crisis. Policy support and courses to enhance psychological resilience are critical to sustain professional identity among nursing students.

Project description:BackgroundProfessional commitment of nursing students is closely related to the stability of the nursing team. Personality traits and metacognition may be related to professional commitment. We investigate the association between Big Five personality, metacognition, and professional commitment among nursing students, and further explore whether Big Five personality modifies the association between metacognition and professional commitment.MethodsFrom December 2023 to January 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 3631 nursing students from 17 universities in China through the online platform Sojump.com by cluster sampling method and using the general information questionnaire, BFI-44 (Big Five Inventory 44) scale, metacognition scale and professional commitment scale to investigate their demographic data, personality traits, level of metacognition and level of professional commitment. Latent profile analysis was employed to identify optimal categories of personality traits. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the personality traits and professional commitment, as well as metacognition and professional commitment in all participants and participants with different personality traits subgroups, adjusting for potential covariates. Furthermore, the potential mediating role of metacognition between personality traits and professional commitment was also investigated.ResultsThree distinct personality traits were identified: sensitive-negative personality (65.2%), ordinary personality (26.6%), and open-positive personality (8.2%). Compared with nursing students with sensitive-negative personality, nursing students with ordinary personality and open-positive personality were associated with professional commitment, respectively [OR (95% CI): 7.01 (5.99-8.20), 21.09 (15.43-28.83)]. The p value for trend of personality and professional commitment was < 0.001. Metacognition was associated with professional commitment [OR (95% CI): 5.95 (5.20-6.81); p < 0.001]. Personality traits could modify the association between metacognition and professional commitment (pinteraction = 0.009). The mediating role of metacognition between Big Five personality and professional commitment has also been verified.ConclusionsPersonality traits and metacognition of nursing students need to be paid attention to, and interventions based on metacognition may help nursing students with different personality traits to improve their professional commitment level.

Project description:BackgroundTransition shock is prevalent among nursing interns. Future time perspective helps nursing interns learn and work more effectively and improve their problem-solving skills. Professional self-concept and professional identity play an important central and driving role in nursing interns' career choices and career development. However, the mechanism by which future time perspective, professional self-concept and professional identity are linked to transition shock among nursing interns remains unknown.ObjectivesWe assess the degree of transition shock experienced by nursing interns and investigate the connections among transition shock, future-focused viewpoint, professional identity, and professional self-concept.DesignA descriptive, cross-sectional design was conducted.SettingEight hospitals in Hunan Province, China were included in the study.ParticipantsNursing interns at the studied hospital participated in the study.MethodsA total of 1090 nursing interns [929 female, 161 male] were recruited from eight hospitals. Data on transition shock, future time perspective, professional self-concept and professional identity among nursing interns were collected using questionnaires from 30 May to June 15, 2022.ResultsOn a 4-point rating scale, the participants' felt transition shock had a mean overall score of 2.39 (SD = 0.52). The dimension with the highest score was overwhelming workload (mean = 2.74, SD = 0.58), while the dimension with the lowest score was incongruity between work and personal life (mean = 2.16, SD = 0.70).Professional identity was statistically significantly correlated with transition shock (r = -0.198, p < 0.01). The preferred level of nursing (β = 0.354, p < 00.01), professional self-concept (β = 0.226, p < 00.01), professional identity (β = -0.2576, p < 00.01) and future time perspective (β = 0.119, p < 00.01) were predictors of transition shock.ConclusionsThe development of nursing interns' sense of professional identity and future time perspective should be enhanced during both the education phase and clinical placement to help nursing interns overcome the experience of transition shock.
