Project description:3-Chloroquinoline-2,4-diones react with cyanide ions in dimethyl formamide to give 3-cyanoquinoline-2,4-diones in small yields due to the strong hindrance of the substituent at the C-3 atom. Good yields can be achieved if the substituent at this position is the methyl group. In the methanol solution, the reaction proceeds by an addition mechanism to form 2-oxo-1a,2,3,7b-tetrahydrooxireno[2,3-c]quinoline-7b-carbonitriles, from which 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-4-carbonitriles are subsequently formed by opening of the epoxide ring with methanol. Some minor products of these reactions have also been isolated. The 1 H, 13 C and 15 N NMR spectra of the prepared compounds were measured, and all resonances were assigned using appropriate two-dimensional spectra.

Project description:Bringing together the concepts of self-immolative linkers and chemiluminogen dioxetane modules, a chemiluminescence-based sensor for fluoride with signal amplification is presented. Signal amplification is obtained by triggering two chemiluminescence events for each reacting fluoride ion that in turn releases two fluoride ions for each ion. As expected, the chemiluminescence signal starts to rise following an induction period. In addition to the analytical potential, this chemical system is also of interest as a demonstration of positive feedback loop character.

Project description:Primary amines present in protonated polypeptides can be covalently modified via gas-phase ion/ion reactions using bifunctional reagent ions. The use of reagent anions with a charge-bearing site that leads to strong interactions with the polypeptide, such as sulfonic acid, gives rise to the formation of a long-lived adduct. A distinct reactive functional group, an aldehyde in the present case, can then undergo reaction with the peptide. Collisional activation of the adduct ion formed from a reagent with an aldehyde group and a peptide ion with a primary amine gives rise to water loss in conjunction with imine (Schiff base) formation. The covalently bound modification is retained upon subsequent collisional activation. This work demonstrates the ability to selectively modify polypeptide ions in the gas phase within the context of a multistage mass spectrometry experiment.

Project description:This study investigates the sensing properties of two distinct compounds, denoted as 1 and 2, featuring acylhydrazone units. Spectroscopic analyses reveal the disruption of the supramolecular assembly upon binding with cyanide ions, consequently due to the hydrogen bonding interaction with acylhydrazone units. This leads to a ratiometric, color-changing response of both the compounds specifically towards cyanide ions. The investigation sheds light on the reversible nature of the cyanide-probe interaction and highlights the potential for reusability in cyanide ion detection. Moreover, compound 1, distinguished by its long alkyl chains, displays a superior response to CN- ions (∼4-fold larger signal), in contrast to compound 2. However, interference was observed from other basic anions, such as F- and AcO-. The research suggests the dominating role of supramolecular assembly, intermolecular interaction, and local hydrophobic environment around the binding sites on the analytical performance of the probe molecules. The findings underscore the significance of structural design and molecular assembly in dictating the selectivity and sensitivity of compounds, offering valuable insights for the development of efficient sensor systems in diverse real-world applications.

Project description:High toxicity and extensive accessibility of fluoride and cyanide ions in diverse environmental media encouraged attention for scheming well-organized probes for their detection. Keeping in mind we have designed and synthesized thiosemicarbazone-based chemosensors RB-1, RB-2 and RB-3 for the detection of fluoride and cyanide ions. The structural elucidation of the synthesized chemosensors is done by employing different analytical techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance and electronic absorption specrtoscopies. Admirable detection limit, binding constant and fast response time (2 s) to F- and CN- ions enlarged the applications of these chemosensors. Additional confirmation of the sensing ability of these chemosensors is derived from DFT and TDDFT calculations with M06/6-311G(d,p) method by performing FMO, UV-Vis, QTAIM and global reactivity parameters elucidation. Overall results point out that investigated chemosensors are suitable candidates for sensing the F- ions. These chemosensors were successfully applied to detect F- ions in a commercial toothpaste sample.

Project description:Fluoride ions (F-) play an important role in preventing cavities and treating osteoporosis, but excessive exposure can lead to serious health problems such as fluorosis and kidney damage. These dual characteristics highlight the need for selective and sensitive methods to detect fluoride ions for health monitoring. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the anion-binding ability of Py-CT4, a fluorescent chemosensor in which pyrene is linked to calix[4]triazole via an ester linker. Notably, Py-CT4 exhibited significant fluorescence quenching for F- compared to other anions, and its fluorescence intensity gradually decreased with increasing F- concentration. This phenomenon is driven by electron transfer from calix[4]triazole to pyrene, initiated by hydrogen bonding with F- and followed by F--induced deprotonation of calix[4]triazole. The selectivity of Py-CT4 for F- appears to stem from its relatively flexible structure and low acidity compared to the previously reported Py-CT4+. Py-CT4 thus represents the first macrocyclic receptor based on charge-neutral 1,2,3-triazole that selectively recognizes F- through fluorescence quenching. Compared to traditional detection methods, Py-CT4 utilizes the advantages of fluorescent detection, such as higher sensitivity, faster response times, and ease of use, for fluoride ion detection. Py-CT4 also demonstrates excellent selectivity for F- even in the presence of competing anions. These features make Py-CT4 a promising tool for monitoring fluoride ions in biological and environmental systems, providing valuable insights into public health and safety.

Project description:The development of an effective and selective chemosensor for CN- ions has become the need of the hour due to their hazardous impact on the environment and humans. Herein, we report the synthesis of two novel chemosensors, IF-1 and IF-2 based on 3-hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide and aldehyde derivatives that have shown selective sensing of CN- ions. IF-2 exhibited exclusive binding with CN- ions that is further confirmed by the binding constant value of 4.77 × 104 M-1 with a low detection limit (8.2 μM). The chemosensory potential is attributed to deprotonation of the labile Schiff base center by CN- ions that results in a color change from colorless to yellow as visible by the naked eye. Accompanying this, a DFT study was also performed in order to find the interaction between the sensor (IF-1) and its ions (F-). A notable charge transfer from 3-hydroxy-2-naphthamide to 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-methylphenol, was indicated by the FMO analysis. The QTAIM analysis revealed that in the complex compound, the strongest pure hydrogen-hydrogen bonding was observed between H53 and H58, indicated by a ρ value of +0.017807. Due to its selective response, IF-2 can be successfully used for making test strips for the detection of CN- ions.

Project description:A novel fluoride (F-) colorimetric and fluorescent probe (P1) based on a core-extended perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) (PTAC) derivative was developed. The probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for distinguishing F- from other common anions through significant changes of the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra. Job's plot analysis revealed that the stoichiometry of the P1-F- interaction is 1 : 1. The association constant between P1 and F- was estimated to be 9.7 × 102 M-1 and the detection limit of F- was about 0.97 μM. An approximately 76 nm red-shift in the absorption and fluorescent quenching response was observed when F- was associated with P1. The emission intensity (I 574) decreased linearly along with the F- concentration from 3 × 10-5 M to 2 × 10-4 M. The mechanism of intermolecular proton transfer (IPT) was deduced based on the changes in the absorption, fluorescence, electrochemistry, and 1H NMR titration spectra. The density functional theory (DFT) theoretical results of the P1-F- complex are in good agreement with the experimental results. The rapid detection of F- ions in the solid state and living cells was also studied.

Project description:Rapid and efficient analysis of fluoride ion is crucial to providing key information for fluoride ion hazard assessment and pollution management. In this study, we synthesized one symmetrical structure called 1,4-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene (1a) and two asymmetrical structures, namely 2-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-1H-phenanthro(9,10-d)imidazole (1b) and 2-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo(4,5-f)(1,10)phenanthroline (1c), which served as an efficient anion sensor for fluoride ion over a wide range of other anions (Cl-, Br-, I-, NO₃-, ClO₄-, HSO₄-, BF₄-, and PF₆-) owing to imidazole group in the main backbone. The absorption intensity of compound 1a at λmax 358 nm slightly decreased; however, a new band at λmax 414 nm appeared upon the addition of fluoride ion, while no evident change occurred upon the addition of eight other anions. The photoluminescence intensity of compound 1a at λmax 426 nm was nearly quenched and fluorescence emission spectra were broadened when fluoride ion was added into dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution of compound 1a. Compared with the optical behaviors of the DMSO solution of compound 1a in the presence of Bu₄N⁺F-, compounds 1b and 1c exhibited considerable sensitivity to fluoride ion due to the increase in coplanarity. Furthermore, compared with the fluorescence emission behaviors of the DMSO solutions of compounds 1a and 1b in the presence of Bu₄N⁺F-, compound 1c exhibited the most significant sensitivity to fluoride ion due to the charge transfer enhancement. Consequently, the detection limits of compounds 1a-1c increased from 5.47 × 10-6 M to 4.21 × 10-6 M to 9.12 × 10-7 M. Furthermore, the largest red shift (75 nm) of the DMSO solution compound 1c in the presence of fluoride ion can be observed. Our results suggest that the increase in coplanarity and the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups to the imidazole backbone can improve the performance in detecting fluoride ion.

Project description:A highly selective, novel BINOL based sensor BBCN has been developed for the fluorescent ratiometric detection of cyanide ions (CN-). The optical study revealed that BBCN exhibited unique spectral changes only with cyanide ions in the presence of other competing ions. Besides, an apparent fluorescent colour change from green to blue was observed. A clear linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence ratiometric ratio of BBCN and the concentration of CN- with a reasonably low detection limit (LOD) of 189 nM (507 ppb). The optical response was due to the nucleophilic addition of CN- to the dicyanovinyl group of the sensor, which compromises the probe's intramolecular charge transfer. This mechanism was well confirmed by Job's plot, 1H-NMR and ESI-MS studies. BBCN showed immediate spectral response towards (1 second) CN- and detection could be realized in a broad pH window. Furthermore, the practical utility of BBCN was studied by test paper-based analysis and the detection of CN- in various water resources.
