Porphyrin Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots for Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence and Sensitive Detection of Cu².

ABSTRACT: Porphyrin (TMPyP) functionalized carbon quantum dots (CQDs-TMPyP), a novel and efficient carbon nanocomposite material, were developed as a novel luminescent material, which could be very useful for the sensitive detection of copper ions in the Cu²⁺ quenching luminescence of functionalized carbon quantum dots. Therefore, we constructed a sensitive "signal off" ECL biosensor for the detection of Cu²⁺. This sensor can sensitively respond to copper ions in the range of 10 nM to 10 μM, and the detection limit is 2.78 nM. At the same time, it has good selectivity and stability and a benign response in complex systems. With excellent properties, this proposed ECL biosensor provides an efficient and ultrasensitive method for Cu²⁺ detection.

Project description:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions and lowering the detection limit of Hg2+ is always a challenge in analytical chemistry and environmental analysis. In this work, sulfhydryl functionalized carbon quantum dots (HS-CQDs) were synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained HS-CQDs were able to detect mercury ions Hg2+ rapidly and sensitively through fluorescence quenching, which may be ascribed to the formation of nonfluorescent ground-state complexes and electron transfer reaction between HS-CQDs and Hg2+. A modification of the HS-CQD surface by -SH was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The HS-CQDs sensing system obtained a good linear relationship over a Hg2+ concentration ranging from 0.45 μM to 2.1 μM with a detection limit of 12 nM. Delightfully, the sensor has been successfully used to detect Hg2+ in real samples with satisfactory results. This means that the sensor has the potential to be used for testing actual samples.

Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots for fluorescence detection of Cu2+ and electrochemical monitoring of bisphenol A.

Project description:In this work, water-soluble nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CDs) were synthetized at low temperature via a simple hydrothermal strategy, using citric acid as the carbon source and polyethylenimine (PEI) as the nitrogen source. The as-prepared N-CDs with near spherical structure and sizes of 4.5-7.5 nm exhibited blue luminescence and a fluorescence quantum yield of 40.2%. Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FTIR spectroscopy measurements demonstrated the presence of the primary and secondary amines on the surface of the N-CDs. The fluorescence of N-CDs could be effectively quenched by Cu2+ owing to the formation of a copper-amine complex between Cu2+ and the amino groups on the surface of the N-CDs. Since this behavior was quite pronounced the fluorescence quenching was used for Cu2+ detection with high sensitivity and good selectivity. The linear range spanned the concentration of Cu2+ from 0.2 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 2 nM. In addition, the N-CDs could effectively electrochemically catalyze the oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA), which provided a promising method for BPA detection. The calibration range of BPA was 0.01 to 0.21 μM with a detection limit of 1.3 nM.

Arginine-modified black phosphorus quantum dots with dual excited states for enhanced electrochemiluminescence in bioanalysis.

Project description:The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is generally emitted via radiative transition of singlet or triplet excited state (S1 or T1). Herein, an ECL mechanism with the transitions of both S1 and T1 of black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) is found, and an arginine (Arg) modification strategy is proposed to passivate the surface oxidation defects of BPQDs, which could modulate the excited states for enhancing the ECL efficiency of BPQDs. The Arg modification leads to greater spatial overlap of highest and lowest occupied molecular orbitals, and spectral shift of radiative transitions, and improves the stability of anion radical of BPQDs. To verify the application of the proposed mechanism, it is used to construct a sensitive method for conveniently evaluating the inhibiting efficiency of cyclo-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-d-tyrosine-lysine to cell surface integrin by using Arg containing peptide modified BPQDs as signal tag. The dual excited states mediated ECL emitters provide a paradigm for adjustable ECL generation and extend the application of ECL analysis.

Quantum Dots with Highly Efficient, Stable, and Multicolor Electrochemiluminescence.

Project description:Outstanding photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence properties of quantum dots (QDs) promise possibilities for them to meet challenging expectations of electrochemiluminescence (ECL), which at present relies on inefficient and spectral-irresolvable emitters based on transition-metal complexes (such as Ru(bpy)3 2+). However, ECL is reported to be extremely sensitive to the surface traps on the QDs likely because of the spatially and temporally separated electrochemical charge injections. Results here reveal that, by engineering the interior inorganic structure (CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell structure) and inorganic-organic interface using new synthetic methods, the trap-insensitive QDs with near-unity PL quantum yield and monoexponential PL decay dynamics in water generated narrow band-edge ECL with efficiencies about six orders of magnitude higher than that of the standard Ru(bpy)3 2+. The band-edge and spectrally resolved ECL from CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs demonstrated a new readout scheme using electrochemical potential. Excellent ECL performance of QDs uncovered here offer opportunities to realize the full potential of ECL for biomedical detection and diagnosis.

Pb2+ Responsive Cu-In-Zn-S Quantum Dots With Low Cytotoxicity.

Project description:Water-soluble Cu-In-Zn-S quantum dots (CIZS QDs) with orange fluorescence have been synthesized with a glutathione (GSH) as stabilizer via facile a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimal reaction conditions of CIZS QDs including temperature, time, pH, and the molar ratios of precursors were studied. TEM results indicate that the aqueous-dispersible CIZS QDs are quasi-spherical, and the average diameters are 3.76 nm with excellent fluorescent stability. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of CIZS QDs was investigated by the microcalorimetry combining with TEM and the IC 50 was 10.2 μM . CIZS QDs showed a promising perspective in applications such as a fluorescent probe for bioimaging and biolabeling due to the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Moreover, the CIZS QDs can distinguish Pb2+ ion from other ions, offering great potentials in lead ion determination in drinking water. According to the results of UV, XRD, FL, PL, and ITC methods, the mechanism of CIZS QDs-Pb2+ assay is due to hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces in the formation of Pb2+ and CIZS QDs.

Aptamer-Modified Cu2+-Functionalized C-Dots: Versatile Means to Improve Nanozyme Activities-"Aptananozymes".

Project description:The covalent linkage of aptamer binding sites to nanoparticle nanozymes is introduced as a versatile method to improve the catalytic activity of nanozymes by concentrating the reaction substrates at the catalytic nanozyme core, thereby emulating the binding and catalytic active-site functions of native enzymes. The concept is exemplified with the synthesis of Cu2+ ion-functionalized carbon dots (C-dots), modified with the dopamine binding aptamer (DBA) or the tyrosinamide binding aptamer (TBA), for the catalyzed oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome by H2O2 or the oxygenation of l-tyrosinamide to the catechol product, which is subsequently oxidized to amidodopachrome, in the presence of H2O2/ascorbate mixture. Sets of structurally functionalized DBA-modified Cu2+ ion-functionalized C-dots or sets of structurally functionalized TBA-modified Cu2+ ion-functionalized C-dots are introduced as nanozymes of superior catalytic activities (aptananozymes) toward the oxidation of dopamine or the oxygenation of l-tyrosinamide, respectively. The aptananozymes reveal enhanced catalytic activities as compared to the separated catalyst and respective aptamer constituents. The catalytic functions of the aptananozymes are controlled by the structure of the aptamer units linked to the Cu2+ ion-functionalized C-dots. In addition, the aptananozyme shows chiroselective catalytic functions demonstrated by the chiroselective-catalyzed oxidation of l/d-DOPA to l/d-dopachrome. Binding studies of the substrates to the different aptananozymes and mechanistic studies associated with the catalytic transformations are discussed.

One-Step Preparation of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots With Anodic Electrochemiluminescence for Sensitive Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide and Glucose.

Project description:Simple and efficient synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) remains a great challenge. Herein, we present an anodic ECL-sensing platform based on nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs), which enables sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose. N-GQDs are easily prepared using one-step molecular fusion between carbon precursor and a dopant in an alkaline hydrothermal process. The synthesis is simple, green, and has high production yield. The as-prepared N-GQDs exhibit a single graphene-layered structure, uniform size, and good crystalline. In the presence of H2O2, N-GQDs possess high anodic ECL activity owing to the functional hydrazide groups. With N-GQDs being ECL probes, sensitive detection of H2O2 in the range of 0.3-100.0 μM with a limit of detection or LOD of 63 nM is achieved. As the oxidation of glucose catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx) produces H2O2, sensitive detection of glucose is also realized in the range of 0.7-90.0 μM (LOD of 96 nM).

Chitosan nanocomposites with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots and porphyrin.

Project description:Water-soluble nanocomposites based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and hydrophobic tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) molecules passivated by chitosan (CS) have been formed. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra evidence TPP presence in both monomeric and agglomerated forms in the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites demonstrate more pronounced singlet oxygen generation compared to free TPP in CS at the same concentration due to the intracomplex Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with a 45% average efficiency.

Graphene Oxide Quantum Dots Covalently Functionalized PVDF Membrane with Significantly-Enhanced Bactericidal and Antibiofouling Performances.

Project description:Covalent bonding of graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) onto amino modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane has generated a new type of nano-carbon functionalized membrane with significantly enhanced antibacterial and antibiofouling properties. A continuous filtration test using E. coli containing feedwater shows that the relative flux drop over GOQDs modified PVDF is 23%, which is significantly lower than those over pristine PVDF (86%) and GO-sheet modified PVDF (62%) after 10 h of filtration. The presence of GOQD coating layer effectively inactivates E. coli and S. aureus cells, and prevents the biofilm formation on the membrane surface, producing excellent antimicrobial activity and potentially antibiofouling capability, more superior than those of previously reported two-dimensional GO sheets and one-dimensional CNTs modified membranes. The distinctive antimicrobial and antibiofouling performances could be attributed to the unique structure and uniform dispersion of GOQDs, enabling the exposure of a larger fraction of active edges and facilitating the formation of oxidation stress. Furthermore, GOQDs modified membrane possesses satisfying long-term stability and durability due to the strong covalent interaction between PVDF and GOQDs. This study opens up a new synthetic avenue in the fabrication of efficient surface-functionalized polymer membranes for potential waste water treatment and biomolecules separation.

Catalytic nanozyme Zn/Cl-doped carbon quantum dots as ratiometric fluorescent probe for sequential on-off-on detection of riboflavin, Cu2+ and thiamine.

Project description:A novel metal-doped Zn/Cl carbon quantum dots (Zn/Cl-CQDs) was developed successfully as ratiometric fluorescent probes for the sequential on-off-on detection of riboflavin, Cu2+ ion and thiamine. The excellent catalytic performance of the Zn/Cl-CQDs nanozyme serves as an ideal platform for sensitive detection of thiamine. Due to the addition of riboflavin to the Zn/Cl-CQDs, the blue emission peak of Zn/Cl-CQDs at 440 nm remains unaffected and used as an internal reference approach, while the green emission peak of riboflavin at 520 nm appeared and increased remarkably. Following the presence of Cu2+, a quenching blue fluorescence signal of Zn/Cl-CQDs was observed which resulted in consequent fluorescent 'turn-off' response toward Cu2+ ion. Finally, upon the addition of thiamine to the above solution under alkaline condition, the blue emission of Zn/Cl-CQDs was gradually recovered. The prepared Zn/Cl-CQDs could act as a nanozyme catalyst for directly catalyzing the oxidation of non-fluorescent substrate of thiamine to produce highly fluorescent substrate of thiochrome. As a result, the blue fluorescence emission peak at 440 nm was recovered. Eventually, the sequential detection properties of ratiometric probes for riboflavin, Cu2+ ion and thiamine were successfully applied in VB2 tablets, drinking water and VB1 tablet with good recoveries of 96.21%, 98.25% and 98.44%, respectively.
