Project description:Coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitors are a promising class of energy storage devices requiring high performance for flexible and miniature electronic devices. Yet, they are still struggling from inferior energy density, which comes from the limited choices in materials and structure used. Here, Zn-doped CuO nanowires were designed as 3D framework for aligned distributing high mass loading of MnO2 nanosheets. Zn could be introduced into the CuO crystal lattice to tune the covalency character and thus improve charge transport. The Zn-CuO@MnO2 as positive electrode obtained superior performance without sacrificing its areal and gravimetric capacitances with the increasing of mass loading of MnO2 due to 3D Zn-CuO framework enabling efficient electron transport. A novel category of free-standing asymmetric coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitor based on Zn0.11CuO@MnO2 core electrode possesses superior specific capacitance and enhanced cell potential window. This asymmetric coaxial structure provides superior performance including higher capacity and better stability under deformation because of sufficient contact between the electrodes and electrolyte. Based on these advantages, the as-prepared asymmetric coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitor exhibits a high specific capacitance of 296.6 mF cm-2 and energy density of 133.47 μWh cm-2. In addition, its capacitance retention reaches 76.57% after bending 10,000 times, which demonstrates as-prepared device's excellent flexibility and long-term cycling stability.

Project description:Flexible supercapacitor electrodes with high mass loading are crucial for obtaining favorable electrochemical performance but still challenging due to sluggish electron and ion transport. Herein, rationally designed CNT/MnO2/graphene-grafted carbon cloth electrodes are prepared by a "graft-deposit-coat" strategy. Due to the large surface area and good conductivity, graphene grafted on carbon cloth offers additional surface areas for the uniform deposition of MnO2 (9.1 mg cm-2) and facilitates charge transfer. Meanwhile, the nanostructured MnO2 provides abundant electroactive sites and short ion transport distance, and CNT coated on MnO2 acts as interconnected conductive "highways" to accelerate the electron transport, significantly improving redox reaction kinetics. Benefiting from high mass loading of electroactive materials, favorable conductivity, and a porous structure, the electrode achieves large areal capacitances without compromising rate capability. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrates a wide working voltage (2.2 V) and high energy density of 10.18 mWh cm-3.

Project description:Three kinds of MnO₂/Ni foam composite electrode with hierarchical meso-macroporous structures were prepared using potentiodynamic (PD), potentiostatic (PS), and a combination of PS and PD(PS + PD) modes of electrodeposition. The electrodeposition mode markedly influenced the surface morphological, textural, and supercapacitive properties of the MnO₂/Ni electrodes. The supercapacitive performance of the MnO₂/Ni electrode obtained via PS + PD(PS + PD(MnO₂/Ni)) was found to be superior to those of MnO₂/Ni electrodes obtained via PD and PS, respectively. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device, activated carbon (AC)/PS + PD(MnO₂/Ni), utilizing PS + PD(MnO₂/Ni) as a positive electrode and AC as a negative electrode, was fabricated. The device exhibited an energy density of 7.7 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 600 W·kg-1 and superior cycling stability, retaining 98% of its initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. The good supercapacitive performance and excellent stability of the AC/PS + PD(MnO₂/Ni) device can be ascribed to its high surface area, hierarchical structure, and interconnected three-dimensional reticular configuration of the nickel metal support, which facilitates electrolyte ion intercalation and deintercalation at the electrode/electrolyte interface and mitigates volume change during repeated charge/discharge cycling. These results demonstrate the great potential of the combination of PS and PD modes for MnO₂ electrodeposition for the development of high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors.

Project description:Helical hierarchical porous Na x MnO2/CC and MoO2/CC, which are assembled from nanosheets and nanoparticles, respectively, are fabricated using a simple electrodeposition method. These unique helical porous structures enable electrodes to have a high capacitance and an outstanding cycling performance. Based on the helical Na x MnO2/CC as the positive electrodes and helical MoO2/CC as the negative electrodes, high performance Na x MnO2/CC//MoO2/CC asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) are successfully assembled, and they achieve a maximum volume Csp of 2.04 F cm-3 and a maximum energy density of 0.92 mW h cm-3 for the whole device and an excellent cycling stability with 97.22% Csp retention after 6000 cycles.

Project description:One-dimensional (1D) yarn or fiber-based supercapacitors that have small diameter, volume and high mechanical strength are needed due to the demands on power source for wearable electronics, micro-devices, and implantable medical devices. The composite sheath is fabricated on a commercially available CNT yarn substrate by alternating depositions of MnO2 and Ag layers. Synergistic effect of high loading level of pseudocapacitive MnO2 and reasonably improved rate-capability are achieved. In the composite sheath, the interconnected networks provide electrical contact between MnO2 aggregates and adjacent Ag layer. The conductive Ag inter layers shorten the solid-state charge diffusion length in the MnO2. Moreover, generated electrons during the charge/discharge process can be collected rapidly by the adjacent Ag layer, therefore, the great extents of MnO2 could be loaded onto the surface of CNT core fiber electrode without a significant rate-capability degradation. Due to the high MnO2 loading level, the composite sheath-core yarn supercapacitor showed excellent specific areal capacitance (322.2 mF/cm2) and according energy density (18.3 µWh/cm2).

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted significant interest because of their heteroatom-containing architectures, high porous networks, large surface areas, and capacity to include redox-active units, which can provide good electrochemical efficiency in energy applications. In this research, we synthesized two novel hydroxy-functionalized COFs-TAPT-2,3-NA(OH)2, TAPT-2,6-NA(OH)2 COFs-through Schiff-base [3 + 2] polycondensations of 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl)triazine (TAPT-3NH2) with 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dicarbaldehyde (2,3-NADC) and 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,5-dicarbaldehyde (2,6-NADC), respectively. The resultant hydroxy-functionalized COFs featured high BET-specific surface areas up to 1089 m2 g-1, excellent crystallinity, and superior thermal stability up to 60.44% char yield. When used as supercapacitor electrodes, the hydroxy-functionalized COFs exhibited electrochemical redox activity due to the presence of redox-active 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene in their COF skeletons. The hydroxy-functionalized COFs showed specific capacitance of 271 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 with excellent stability after 2000 cycles of 86.5% capacitance retention. Well-known pore features and high surface areas of such COFs, together with their superior supercapacitor performance, make them suitable electrode materials for use in practical applications.

Project description:This study presents a novel strategy to enhance the energy storage performance of asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) by utilizing nanoporous NiCoN flower structures as the positive electrode material. The NiCoN material is synthesized via a straightforward hydrothermal method, followed by calcination in a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting electrode demonstrates exceptional electrochemical properties, including a high specific capacity of 773 C g-1 (1955 F g-1), excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability. The hierarchical architecture of the NiCoN electrode, composed of interconnected porous nanosheets, facilitates efficient charge transfer and enhanced electrolyte ion diffusion. When paired with activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode in the NiCoN//AC ASC configuration, the device achieves an impressive energy density of 36 W h kg-1 at a power density of 775 W kg-1. Moreover, the device exhibits remarkable cycling stability, retaining 85% of its initial capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. These findings underscore the potential of NiCoN as a high-performance electrode material for ASCs, offering a promising pathway for advancements in next-generation energy storage technologies.

Project description:Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are a kind of promising cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries because of their abundant raw materials and high theoretical capacities. However, their synthesis always involves long time calcination at a high temperature, leading to low synthesis efficiency and high energy consumption. Herein, an ultra-fast synthesis strategy of Mn-based LTMOs in minutes is developed directly from alkali-transition metal based-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The phase transformation from the MOF to LTMO is systematically investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, variable temperature optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the results reveal that the uniform distribution of K and Mn ions in MOFs promotes fast phase transformation. As a cathode in potassium-ion batteries, the fast-synthesized Mn-based LTMO demonstrates an excellent electrochemical performance with 119 mA h g-1 and good cycling stability, highlighting the high production efficiency of LTMOs for future large-scale manufacturing and application of potassium-ion batteries.

Project description:The implementation of high mass loading MnO2 on electrochemical electrodes of supercapacitors is currently challenging due to the poor electrical conductivity and elongated electron/ion transport distance. In this paper, a NiCo2O4/MnO2 heterostructure was built on the surface of three-dimensional graphene/nickel foam (GNF) by a hydrothermal method. The petal structured NiCo2O4 loaded on graphene played a wonderful role as a supporting framework, which provided more space for the growth of high mass loading MnO2 microflowers, thereby increasing the utilization rate of the active material MnO2. The GNF@NiCo2O4/MnO2 composite was used as a positive electrode and achieved a high areal capacitance of 1630.5 mF cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 in the neutral Na2SO4 solution. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with the GNF@NiCo2O4/MnO2 positive electrode and activated carbon negative electrode possessed a wide voltage window (2.1 V) and splendid energy density (45.9 Wh kg-1), which was attributed to the satisfactory electroactive area, low resistance, quick mass diffusion and ion transport caused by high mass loading MnO2.

Project description:Design and fabrication of a hierarchical core/shell MgCo2O4@MnO2 nanowall arrays on Ni-foam by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The electrochemical measurements prove these composites with MnO2 definitely offer better supercapacitive performance of the MgCo2O4 electrode material. The nanowall structure provides more active sites and charge transfer during the Faradic reaction. The MgCo2O4@MnO2 nanowall shows an excellent electrochemical performance (852.5 F g-1 at 1 A g-1). The asymmetric supercapacitor is composed of the MgCo2O4@MnO2 nanowall and the activated carbon (AC). The energy densities of the asymmetric supercapacitor device can keep up 67.2 Wh·kg-1 at 5760.0 W·kg-1. The MgCo2O4@MnO2 nanowall shows excellent supercapacitive performance and has a great potential for more research and application in the asymmetric supercapacitor devices field.
