Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is attractive as an anode material for next-generation batteries, because of its layered structure being favorable for the insertion/deinsertion of Li+ ions, and its fairly high theoretical capacity. However, since the MoS2 anode material has exhibited disadvantages, such as low electrical conductivity and poor cycling stability, to improve the electrochemical performance of MoS2 in this study, a nanocomposite structure consisting of MoS2 and GNS (MoS2/GNS) as an anode for LIBs was prepared, by controlling the weight ratios of MoS2/GNS. The X-ray diffraction patterns and electron microscopic analysis showed that the nanocomposite electrode structure consisted of well-formed MoS2 nanoparticles and GNS. Compared to MoS2-only, the MoS2/GNS composites exhibited high retention and improved capacity at high current densities. In particular, among these nanocomposite samples, MoS2/GNS(8 : 2) with an appropriate portion of GNS exhibited the best LIB performance, due to the lowest interfacial resistance and highest Li-ion diffusivity.

Project description:CO2 can be electrochemically reduced to different products depending on the nature of catalysts. In this work, we report comprehensive kinetic studies on catalytic selectivity and product distribution of the CO2 reduction reaction on various metal surfaces. The influences on reaction kinetics can be clearly analyzed from the variation of reaction driving force (binding energy difference) and reaction resistance (reorganization energy). Moreover, the CO2RR product distributions are further affected by external factors such as electrode potential and solution pH. A potential-mediated mechanism is found to determine the competing two-electron reduction products of CO2 that shifts from thermodynamics-controlled product formic acid at less negative electrode potentials to kinetic-controlled product CO at more negative electrode potentials. Based on detailed kinetic simulations, a three-parameter descriptor is applied to identify the catalytic selectivity of CO, formate, hydrocarbons/alcohols, as well as side product H2. The present kinetic study not only well explains the catalytic selectivity and product distribution of experimental results but also provides a fast way for catalyst screening.

Project description:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction to fuels presents one of the great challenges in chemistry. Herein we present an understanding of trends in electrocatalytic activity for carbon dioxide reduction over different metal catalysts that rationalize a number of experimental observations including the selectivity with respect to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. We also identify two design criteria for more active catalysts. The understanding is based on density functional theory calculations of activation energies for electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction as a basis for an electrochemical kinetic model of the process. We develop scaling relations relating transition state energies to the carbon monoxide adsorption energy and determine the optimal value of this descriptor to be very close to that of copper.

Project description:Herein, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate on carbon-supported bismuth nanoparticles is reported. Carbon-supported Bi nanoparticles (about 10 nm in size) were synthesized using a simple, fast and scalable approach performed under room conditions. The so-prepared Bi electrocatalyst was characterized by different physicochemical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction and subsequently air-brushed on a carbon paper to prepare electrodes. These electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and also by cyclic voltammetry. Finally, CO2 electroreduction electrolyses were performed at different electrode potentials for 3 h. At the optimal electrode potential (-1.6 V vs AgCl/Ag), the concentration of formate was about 77 mM with a faradaic efficiency of 93 ± 2.5%. A 100% faradaic efficiency was found at a lower potential (-1.5 V vs AgCl/Ag) with a formate concentration of about 55 mM. In terms of stability, we observed that after about 70 h (in 3 h electrolysis experiments at different potentials), the electrode deactivates due to the gradual loss of metal as shown by SEM/EDX analyses of the deactivated electrodes.

Project description:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to multi-carbon fuels and chemical feedstocks is an appealing approach to mitigate excessive CO2 emissions. However, the reported catalysts always show either a low Faradaic efficiency of the C2+ product or poor long-term stability. Herein, we report a facile and scalable anodic corrosion method to synthesize oxygen-rich ultrathin CuO nanoplate arrays, which form Cu/Cu2O heterogeneous interfaces through self-evolution during electrocatalysis. The catalyst exhibits a high C2H4 Faradaic efficiency of 84.5%, stable electrolysis for ~55 h in a flow cell using a neutral KCl electrolyte, and a full-cell ethylene energy efficiency of 27.6% at 200 mA cm-2 in a membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer. Mechanism analyses reveal that the stable nanostructures, stable Cu/Cu2O interfaces, and enhanced adsorption of the *OCCOH intermediate preserve selective and prolonged C2H4 production. The robust and scalable produced catalyst coupled with mild electrolytic conditions facilitates the practical application of electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Project description:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with metal-nitrogen (M-N) sites are one of the most promising electrocatalysts for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO2R). However, challenges in simultaneously enhancing the activity and selectivity greatly limit the efficiency of ECO2R due to the improper interaction of reactants/intermediates on these catalytic sites. Herein, we report a carbon-based nickel (Ni) cluster catalyst containing both single-atom and cluster sites (NiNx-T, T = 500-800) through a ligand-mediated method and realize a highly active and selective electrocatalytic CO2R process. The catalytic performance can be regulated by the dispersion of Ni-N species via controlling the pyrolysis condition. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of pyrrolic-nitrogen coordinated Ni single-atom and cluster sites, NiNx-600 exhibits a satisfying catalytic performance, including a high partial current density of 61.85 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 7,291 h-1 at -1.2 V vs. RHE, and almost 100% selectivity toward carbon monoxide (CO) production, as well as good stability under 10 h of continuous electrolysis. This work discloses the significant role of regulating the coordination environment of the transition metal sites and the synergistic effect between the isolated single-site and cluster site in enhancing the ECO2R performance.

Project description:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide offers a promising avenue to produce valuable fuels and chemicals using greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as the carbon feedstock. Because industrial carbon dioxide point sources often contain numerous contaminants, such as nitrogen oxides, understanding the potential impact of contaminants on carbon dioxide electrolysis is crucial for practical applications. Herein, we investigate the impact of various nitrogen oxides, including nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide, on carbon dioxide electroreduction on three model electrocatalysts (i.e., copper, silver, and tin). We demonstrate that the presence of nitrogen oxides (up to 0.83%) in the carbon dioxide feed leads to a considerable Faradaic efficiency loss in carbon dioxide electroreduction, which is caused by the preferential electroreduction of nitrogen oxides over carbon dioxide. The primary products of nitrogen oxides electroreduction include nitrous oxide, nitrogen, hydroxylamine, and ammonia. Despite the loss in Faradaic efficiency, the electrocatalysts exhibit similar carbon dioxide reduction performances once a pure carbon dioxide feed is restored, indicating a negligible long-term impact of nitrogen oxides on the catalytic properties of the model catalysts.

Project description:The activity and selectivity of a copper electrocatalyst during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) are largely dominated by the interplay between local reaction environment, the catalyst surface, and the adsorbed intermediates. In situ characterization studies have revealed many aspects of this intimate relationship between surface reactivity and adsorbed species, but these investigations are often limited by the spatial and temporal resolution of the analytical technique of choice. Here, Raman spectroscopy with both space and time resolution was used to reveal the distribution of adsorbed species and potential reaction intermediates on a copper electrode during eCO2RR. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the in situ Raman spectra revealed that a working electrocatalyst exhibits spatial heterogeneities in adsorbed species, and that the electrode surface can be divided into CO-dominant (mainly located at dendrite structures) and C-C dominant regions (mainly located at the roughened electrode surface). Our spectral evaluation further showed that in the CO-dominant regions, linear CO was observed (as characterized by a band at ∼2090 cm-1), accompanied by the more classical Cu-CO bending and stretching vibrations located at ∼280 and ∼360 cm-1, respectively. In contrast, in the C-C directing region, these three Raman bands are suppressed, while at the same time a band at ∼495 cm-1 and a broad Cu-CO band at ∼2050 cm-1 dominate the Raman spectra. Furthermore, PCA revealed that anodization creates more C-C dominant regions, and labeling experiments confirmed that the 495 cm-1 band originates from the presence of a Cu-C intermediate. These results indicate that a copper electrode at work is very dynamic, thereby clearly displaying spatiotemporal heterogeneities, and that in situ micro-spectroscopic techniques are crucial for understanding the eCO2RR mechanism of working electrocatalyst materials.

Project description:Hybridizing structured carbon materials with MoS2 has been demonstrated to be an effective method to increase the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and durability of MoS2. In this study, we report the growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of uniform hollow carbon spheres (HCS) to form a hydrangea-like nanocomposite. The HCS were formed through carbonization of a phenol formaldehyde template, and the MoS2 nanosheets were grown on the HCS surfaces through a hydrothermal method. The nanocomposites have the advantages of significantly improved electrical conductivity, ease of varying the MoS2 loading, and minimizing stacking of MoS2 nanosheets, which are manifested by their remarkably improved HER performance. The well-tuned carbon-MoS2 composite shows a Tafel slope of 48.9 mV dec-1, an onset potential of -0.079 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), and an overpotential of 126 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 after 1000 potential cycles.

Project description:Increasing the loading density of nanoparticles on carbon support is essential for making Pt-alloy/C catalysts practical in H2-air fuel cells. The challenge lies in increasing the loading while suppressing the sintering of Pt-alloy nanoparticles. This work presents a 40% Pt-weighted sub-4 nm PtCo/C alloy catalyst via a simple incipient wetness impregnation method. By carefully optimizing the synthetic conditions such as Pt/Co ratios, calcination temperature, and time, the size of supported PtCo alloy nanoparticles is successfully controlled below 4 nm, and a high electrochemical surface area of 93.8 m2/g is achieved, which is 3.4 times that of commercial PtCo/C-TKK catalysts. Demonstrated by electrochemical oxygen reduction reactions, PtCo/C alloy catalysts present an enhanced mass activity of 0.465 A/mg at 0.9 V vs. RHE, which is 2.0 times that of the PtCo/C-TKK catalyst. Therefore, the developed PtCo/C alloy catalyst has the potential to be a highly practical catalyst for H2-air fuel cells.
