Project description:Alginate (Alg) is a renewable polymer with excellent hemostatic properties and biocapability and is widely used for hemostatic wound dressing. However, the swelling properties of alginate-based wound dressings need to be promoted to meet the requirements of wider application. Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA) is a natural polymer with high hydrophility. In the current study, novel Alg/PGA composite microparticles with double network structure were prepared by the emulsification/internal gelation method. It was found from the structure characterization that a double network structure was formed in the composite microparticles due to the ion chelation interaction between Ca2+ and the carboxylate groups of Alg and PGA and the electrostatic interaction between the secondary amine group of PGA and the carboxylate groups of Alg and PGA. The swelling behavior of the composite microparticles was significantly improved due to the high hydrophility of PGA. Influences of the preparing conditions on the swelling behavior of the composites were investigated. The porous microparticles could be formed while compositing of PGA. Thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis method. Moreover, in vitro cytocompatibility test of microparticles exhibited good biocompatibility with L929 cells. All results indicated that such Alg/PGA composite microparticles are a promising candidate in the field of wound dressing for hemostasis or rapid removal of exudates.

Project description:1. Methyl retinoate has been converted into methyl 5,6-monoepoxyretinoate by reaction with monoperphthalic acid. The epoxy acid ester on alkaline hydrolysis gave 5,6-monoepoxyretinoic acid. 2. Treatment of the 5,6-monoepoxy compounds with ethanolic hydrochloric acid gave the corresponding 5,8-epoxy (furanoid) compounds. 3. With lithium aluminium hydride, the acid and the ester groups were selectively reduced to primary alcohols. 4. Administration of methyl 5,6-monoepoxyretinoate intraperitoneally and subcutaneously had good growth response in vitamin A-deficient rats. 5. 5,6-Monoepoxyretinoic acid, when given intraperitoneally as the sodium salt, was 157% as active as all-trans-retinyl acetate. 6. Methyl 5,6-monoepoxyretinoate was hydrolysed to the epoxy acid by rat-liver homogenate. It had 35% of the biological activity of all-trans-retinyl acetate in the rat when given orally.

Project description:The incorporation of the trifluoromethoxy group into organic molecules has become very popular due to the unique properties of the named substituent that has a "pseudohalogen" character, while the chemical properties of the synthesized compound, especially heterocycles with such a group, are less studied. As trifluoromethoxy-substituted pyrazines are still unknown, we have developed efficient and scalable methods for 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethoxypyrazine synthesis, showing the synthetic utility of this molecule for Buchwald-Hartwig amination and the Kumada-Corriu and Suzuki and Sonogashira coupling reactions. Some comparisons of chlorine atom and trifluoromethoxy group stability in these transformations have been carried out.

Project description:A pH-responsive membrane is expected to be used for applications such as drug delivery, controlling chemical release, bioprocessing, and water treatment. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) is a pH-responsive polymer that swells at high pH. A tubular α-alumina porous support was coated with PAA by grafting to introduce appropriate functional groups, followed by polymerization with acrylic acid. The permeances of acetic acid, lactic acid, phenol, and caffeine were evaluated by circulating water inside the membrane, measuring the concentration of species that permeated into the water, and analyzing the results with the permeation model. The permeance of all species decreased with increasing pH, and that of phenol was the largest among these species. At high pH, the PAA carboxy group in the membrane dissociated into carboxy ions and protons, causing the swelling of PAA due to electrical repulsion between the negative charges of the PAA chain, which decreased the pore size of the membrane and suppressed permeation. Furthermore, the electrical repulsion between negatively charged species and the PAA membrane also suppressed the permeation. The results of this study demonstrated that the PAA-coated α-alumina porous support functioned as a pH-responsive membrane.

Project description:Plasticized poly (lactic acid) (PPLA) was prepared by melt blending poly (lactic acid) (PLA) with 10 wt% of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), with varied molecular weights range from 400 to 4000. The structure, thermal property, morphology, and surface free energy of the PPLA were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angles (CA). The resulting PPLA results indicated that the introduction of PEG to the blend systems resulted in a ductile fracture, a decrease in the melt temperature (Tm) and glass transfer temperature (Tg), and an increase in the degree of crystallization (χc), which indicated an improved flexibility. In addition, the polarity of the PPLA increased and the surface free energy decreased. The resulting PPLA was subsequently used as matrix to blend with wood flour to prepare composites. The mechanical strength, melting behavior, thermal stability, and microscopy of the PPLA/wood flour composites were also evaluated. These results illustrated that the plasticized PPLA matrix was beneficial to the interfacial compatibility between the polar filler and the substrate.

Project description:1. Hyaluronic acid was isolated from ox synovial fluid by sedimentation equilibrium in a caesium chloride density gradient (Silpananta, Dunstone & Ogston, 1967). The product was almost free from chondroitin sulphate and from protein. 2. Its composition did not differ significantly from that of the carbohydrate part of the protein-containing material isolated by filtration. Its physicochemical properties and molecular configuration were similar, except for its viscosity, which showed markedly reduced concentration-dependence and shear-dependence. This suggests that the associated protein tends to form links between molecules of hyaluronic acid. 3. The accurate measurement of viscosity at very low velocity gradient, by use of the damping of oscillations in a Couette viscometer, is described. 4. A method is described for measuring, approximately, the thermodynamic non-ideality of a solute from the shape of its schlieren curve at sedimentation equilibrium in a density gradient. 5. A value for the partial specific volume of hyaluronic acid in dilute salt solution was calculated from its isopycnic density in a caesium chloride gradient.

Project description:Tantalum disulfide (TaS2) two-dimensional film material has attracted wide attention due to its unique optical and electrical properties. In this work, we report the preparation of 1?T-TaS2 quantum dots (1?T-TaS2 QDs) by top-down method. Herein, we prepared the TaS2 QDs having a monodisperse grain size of around 3?nm by an effective ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation method. Optical studies using UV-Vis, PL, and PLE techniques on the as-prepared TaS2 QDs exhibited ultraviolet absorption at 283?nm. Furthermore, we found that dimension reduction of TaS2 has led to a modification of the band gap, namely a transition from indirect to direct band gap, which is explained using first-principle calculations. By using quinine as reference, the fluorescence quantum yield is 45.6%. Therefore, our results suggest TaS2 QDs have unique and extraordinary optical properties. Moreover, the low-cost, facile method of producing high quality TaS2 QDs in this work is ideal for mass production to ensure commercial viability of devices based on this material. Project description:With the development of global industry, industrial wastewater pollution has caused serious environmental problems, and the demand for green and sustainable adsorbents is increasingly strong in the society. In this article, lignin/cellulose hydrogel materials were prepared using sodium lignosulfonate and cellulose as raw materials and 0.1% acetic acid solution as a solvent. The results showed that the optimal adsorption conditions for Congo red were as follows: an adsorption time of 4 h, a pH value of 6, and an adsorption temperature of 45 °C. The adsorption process was in line with the Langmuir isothermal model and a quasi-second-order kinetic model, which belonged to single molecular layer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 294.0 mg/g. The optimal adsorption conditions for Malachite green were as follows: an adsorption time of 4 h, a pH value of 4, and an adsorption temperature of 60 °C. The adsorption process was consistent with the Freundlich isothermal model and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which belonged to the chemisorption-dominated multimolecular layer adsorption with the maximum adsorption capacity of 129.8 mg/g.

Project description:Thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) combines the high elasticity of elastomers and excellent processability of thermoplastics. Novel bio-based TPV based on poly (lactide) (PLA) and poly (1,4-butanediol/2,3-butanediol/succinate/itaconic acid) (PBBSI) were prepared in this research. PBBSI copolyesters were synthesized by melting polycondensation, and the molecular weights, chemical structures and compositions of the copolyesters were characterized by GPC, NMR and FTIR. Bio-based 2,3-butanediol was successfully incorporated to depress the crystallization behavior of the PBBSI copolyester. With an increase of 2,3-butanediol content, the PBBSI copolyester transformed from a rigid plastic to a soft elastomer. Furthermore, the obtained TPV has good elasticity and rheological properties, which means it can be applied as a 3D-printing material.

Project description:Protocatechuic acid (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid; PCA) is a phenolic acid present in plants as a secondary metabolite and is also produced in the human organism as a metabolite from the degradation of polyphenols by the intestinal microbiota, particularly of flavonoids. However, PCA, like most polyphenols, is biotransformed in the human body to different conjugates as sulfates, which are found circulating in blood and could be involved in the bioactivity of the original compound. This paper describes a simple process for the preparation of PCA monosulfates with satisfactory yields. Two compounds were obtained that were identified as PCA-3-sulfate and PCA-4-sulfate by mass spectrometry and ¹H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance using one- and two-dimensional techniques (heteronuclear single-quantum coherence and heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation). Differential MS fragmentation behavior and UV spectra were observed for each compound, which could be used for their identification in samples of unknown composition. The described procedure can be used for the preparation of these polyphenol metabolites in view of their use in in vivo and in vitro studies, as well as standards for their analysis in biological fluids, to contribute to the elucidation of biological effects of dietary polyphenols.
