Project description:ProblemThe World Health Organization calls on all with quality medical information to share it with the public and combat health misinformation; however, U.S. medical schools do not currently teach students effective communication with lay audiences about health. Most physicians have inadequate training in mass communication strategies.ApproachIn August 2018, a novel 90-minute class at the University of Minnesota Medical School introduced fourth-year medical students to basic skills for communicating with lay audiences through mass media. Instructors were physicians with experience interacting with the general public via radio, op-ed articles, social media, print media, television, and community and legislative advocacy. After a 20-minute lecture and sharing of instructors' personal experiences, students completed two 30-minute small-group activities. They identified communications objectives and talking points for a health topic, drafting these as Tweets or an op-ed article outline, then presented talking points in a mock press conference with their peers, practicing skills just learned. Pre- and postsurveys documented students' previous engagement and comfort with future engagement with mass media messaging.OutcomesOver 1 week, 142 students participated in 6 separate classes, and 127 completed both pre- and postsurveys. Before the course, only 6% (7/127) of students had comfortably engaged with social media and 14% (18/127) had engaged with traditional media in their professional roles. After the course, students self-reported an increase in their comfort, perceived ability, and likelihood of using specific communications skills to advocate for their patients (all P < .001).Next stepsThe course will be expanded into a 5-session thread for third- and fourth-year medical students spread over 2 years. This thread will include meeting physicians who engage with lay audiences, identifying best practices for mass health communication, identifying bias and misinformation, "dos and don'ts" of social media, and communication skills for legislative advocacy.

Project description:Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) is not a new idea, but it has recently attracted renewed interest since seawater presents a reduced absorption window for blue-green light. Due to its higher bandwidth, underwater optical wireless communications can support higher data rates at low latency levels compared to acoustic and RF counterparts. The paper is aimed at those who want to undertake studies on UOWC. It offers an overview on the current technologies and those potentially available soon. Particular attention has been given to offering a recent bibliography, especially on the use of single-photon receivers.

Project description:The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) couples IoT technologies with healthcare services in order to support real-time, remote patient monitoring and treatment. However, the interconnectivity of critical medical devices with other systems in various network layers creates new opportunities for remote adversaries. Since most of the communication protocols have not been specifically designed for the needs of connected medical devices, there is a need to classify the available IoT communication technologies in terms of security. In this paper we classify IoT communication protocols, with respect to their application in IoMT. Then we describe the main characteristics of IoT communication protocols used at the perception, network and application layer of medical devices. We examine the inherent security characteristics and limitations of IoMT-specific communication protocols. Based on realistic attacks we identify available mitigation controls that may be applied to secure IoMT communications, as well as existing research and implementation gaps.

Project description:Quantum communications promises reliable transmission of quantum information, efficient distribution of entanglement and generation of completely secure keys. For all these tasks, we need to determine the optimal point-to-point rates that are achievable by two remote parties at the ends of a quantum channel, without restrictions on their local operations and classical communication, which can be unlimited and two-way. These two-way assisted capacities represent the ultimate rates that are reachable without quantum repeaters. Here, by constructing an upper bound based on the relative entropy of entanglement and devising a dimension-independent technique dubbed 'teleportation stretching', we establish these capacities for many fundamental channels, namely bosonic lossy channels, quantum-limited amplifiers, dephasing and erasure channels in arbitrary dimension. In particular, we exactly determine the fundamental rate-loss tradeoff affecting any protocol of quantum key distribution. Our findings set the limits of point-to-point quantum communications and provide precise and general benchmarks for quantum repeaters.

Project description:Allostery in proteins influences various biological processes such as regulation of gene transcription and activities of enzymes and cell signaling. Computational approaches for analysis of allosteric coupling provide inexpensive opportunities to predict mutations and to design small-molecule agents to control protein function and cellular activity. We develop a computationally efficient network-based method, Ohm, to identify and characterize allosteric communication networks within proteins. Unlike previously developed simulation-based approaches, Ohm relies solely on the structure of the protein of interest. We use Ohm to map allosteric networks in a dataset composed of 20 proteins experimentally identified to be allosterically regulated. Further, the Ohm allostery prediction for the protein CheY correlates well with NMR CHESCA studies. Our webserver, Ohm.dokhlab.org, automatically determines allosteric network architecture and identifies critical coupled residues within this network.

Project description:Heart failure is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Cardiac remodelling is first an adaptive, becoming a maladaptive, compensatory mechanism that finally causes ventricular dysfunction independently of the etiology of the initial insult. In the present article the authors describe the elements of the human heart, examining their basic functions and their inter-communication under both normal and pathological circumstances. Cardiac myocytes carry out mechanical and electrical functions of the heart and cardiac fibroblasts maintain its structural integrity. Several factors can affect fibroblast activation and under pathological stress they transdifferentiate into myofibroblasts. Endothelial cells have complex biological functions, including the control of vascular permeability, vasomotion, regulation of haemostasis, immune responses and angiogenesis. The extracellular matrix is a complex architectural network consisting of a variety of proteins. Various routes using a plethora of products and mediators contribute to the cross-talk of the myocytes with endothelial cells, extracellular matrix and cardiac fibroblasts. A better understanding of the entire mechanism of cellular communication by the established or the more recently discovered agents will certainly emerge promising new perspectives when looking at the prevention of heart failure and leading to more substantial therapeutic interventions.
