Project description:There is increasing evidence that hearing-impaired (HI) individuals do not use the same listening strategies as normal-hearing (NH) individuals, even when wearing optimally fitted hearing aids. In this perspective, better characterization of individual perceptual strategies is an important step toward designing more effective speech-processing algorithms. Here, we describe two complementary approaches for (a) revealing the acoustic cues used by a participant in a /d/-/g/ categorization task in noise and (b) measuring the relative contributions of these cues to decision. These two approaches involve natural speech recordings altered by the addition of a “bump noise.” The bumps were narrowband bursts of noise localized on the spectrotemporal locations of the acoustic cues, allowing the experimenter to manipulate the consonant percept. The cue-weighting strategies were estimated for three groups of participants: 17 NH listeners, 18 HI listeners with high-frequency loss, and 15 HI listeners with flat loss. HI participants were provided with individual frequency-dependent amplification to compensate for their hearing loss. Although all listeners relied more heavily on the high-frequency cue than on the low-frequency cue, an important variability was observed in the individual weights, mostly explained by differences in internal noise. Individuals with high-frequency loss relied slightly less heavily on the high-frequency cue relative to the low-frequency cue, compared with NH individuals, suggesting a possible influence of supra-threshold deficits on cue-weighting strategies. Altogether, these results suggest a need for individually tailored speech-in-noise processing in hearing aids, if more effective speech discriminability in noise is to be achieved.

Project description:Studies on consonant perception under noise conditions typically describe the average consonant error as exponential in the Articulation Index (AI). While this AI formula nicely fits the average error over all consonants, it does not fit the error for any consonant at the utterance level. This study analyzes the error patterns of six stop consonants /p, t, k, b, d, g/ with four vowels (/α/, /ε/, /I/, /ae/), at the individual consonant (i.e., utterance) level. The findings include that the utterance error is essentially zero for signal to noise ratios (SNRs) at least -2 dB, for >78% of the stop consonant utterances. For these utterances, the error is essentially a step function in the SNR at the utterance's detection threshold. This binary error dependence is consistent with the audibility of a single binary defining acoustic feature, having zero error above the feature's detection threshold. Also 11% of the sounds have high error, defined as ≥ 20% for SNRs greater than or equal to -2 dB. A grand average across many such sounds, having a natural distribution in thresholds, results in the error being exponential in the AI measure, as observed. A detailed analysis of the variance from the AI error is provided along with a Bernoulli-trials analysis of the statistical significance.

Project description:Children with reading impairments have deficits in phonological awareness, phonemic categorization, speech-in-noise perception, and psychophysical tasks such as frequency and temporal discrimination. Many of these children also exhibit abnormal encoding of speech stimuli in the auditory brainstem, even though responses to click stimuli are normal. In typically developing children the auditory brainstem response reflects acoustic differences between contrastive stop consonants. The current study investigated whether this subcortical differentiation of stop consonants was related to reading ability and speech-in-noise performance. Across a group of children with a wide range of reading ability, the subcortical differentiation of 3 speech stimuli ([ba], [da], [ga]) was found to be correlated with phonological awareness, reading, and speech-in-noise perception, with better performers exhibiting greater differences among responses to the 3 syllables. When subjects were categorized into terciles based on phonological awareness and speech-in-noise performance, the top-performing third in each grouping had greater subcortical differentiation than the bottom third. These results are consistent with the view that the neural processes underlying phonological awareness and speech-in-noise perception depend on reciprocal interactions between cognitive and perceptual processes.

Project description:Synthetic speech has been widely used in the study of speech cues. A serious disadvantage of this method is that it requires prior knowledge about the cues to be identified in order to synthesize the speech. Incomplete or inaccurate hypotheses about the cues often lead to speech sounds of low quality. In this research a psychoacoustic method, named three-dimensional deep search (3DDS), is developed to explore the perceptual cues of stop consonants from naturally produced speech. For a given sound, it measures the contribution of each subcomponent to perception by time truncating, highpass/lowpass filtering, or masking the speech with white noise. The AI-gram, a visualization tool that simulates the auditory peripheral processing, is used to predict the audible components of the speech sound. The results are generally in agreement with the classical studies that stops are characterized by a short duration burst followed by a F2 transition, suggesting the effectiveness of the 3DDS method. However, it is also shown that /ba/ and /pa/ may have a wide band click as the dominant cue. F2 transition is not necessary for the perception of /ta/ and /ka/. Moreover, many stop consonants contain conflicting cues that are characteristic of competing sounds. The robustness of a consonant sound to noise is determined by the intensity of the dominant cue.

Project description:The existing missing data literature does not provide a clear prescription for estimating interaction effects with missing data, particularly when the interaction involves a pair of continuous variables. In this article, we describe maximum likelihood and multiple imputation procedures for this common analysis problem. We outline 3 latent variable model specifications for interaction analyses with missing data. These models apply procedures from the latent variable interaction literature to analyses with a single indicator per construct (e.g., a regression analysis with scale scores). We also discuss multiple imputation for interaction effects, emphasizing an approach that applies standard imputation procedures to the product of 2 raw score predictors. We thoroughly describe the process of probing interaction effects with maximum likelihood and multiple imputation. For both missing data handling techniques, we outline centering and transformation strategies that researchers can implement in popular software packages, and we use a series of real data analyses to illustrate these methods. Finally, we use computer simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed techniques.

Project description:Causal inference-the process of deciding whether two incoming signals come from the same source-is an important step in audiovisual (AV) speech perception. This research explored causal inference and perception of incongruent AV English consonants. Nine adults were presented auditory, visual, congruent AV, and incongruent AV consonant-vowel syllables. Incongruent AV stimuli included auditory and visual syllables with matched vowels, but mismatched consonants. Open-set responses were collected. For most incongruent syllables, participants were aware of the mismatch between auditory and visual signals (59.04%) or reported the auditory syllable (33.73%). Otherwise, participants reported the visual syllable (1.13%) or some other syllable (6.11%). Statistical analyses were used to assess whether visual distinctiveness and place, voice, and manner features predicted responses. Mismatch responses occurred more when the auditory and visual consonants were visually distinct, when place and manner differed across auditory and visual consonants, and for consonants with high visual accuracy. Auditory responses occurred more when the auditory and visual consonants were visually similar, when place and manner were the same across auditory and visual stimuli, and with consonants produced further back in the mouth. Visual responses occurred more when voicing and manner were the same across auditory and visual stimuli, and for front and middle consonants. Other responses were variable, but typically matched the visual place, auditory voice, and auditory manner of the input. Overall, results indicate that causal inference and incongruent AV consonant perception depend on salience and reliability of auditory and visual inputs and degree of redundancy between auditory and visual inputs. A parameter-free computational model of incongruent AV speech perception based on unimodal confusions, with a causal inference rule, was applied. Data from the current study present an opportunity to test and improve the generalizability of current AV speech integration models.

Project description:The accuracy of interdisciplinarity measurements is directly related to the quality of the underlying bibliographic data. Existing indicators of interdisciplinarity are not capable of reflecting the inaccuracies introduced by incorrect and incomplete records because correct and complete bibliographic data can rarely be obtained. This is the case for the Rao-Stirling index, which cannot handle references that are not categorized into disciplinary fields. We introduce a method that addresses this problem. It extends the Rao-Stirling index to acknowledge missing data by calculating its interval of uncertainty using computational optimization. The evaluation of our method indicates that the uncertainty interval is not only useful for estimating the inaccuracy of interdisciplinarity measurements, but it also delivers slightly more accurate aggregated interdisciplinarity measurements than the Rao-Stirling index.

Project description:Variation in solar ultraviolet radiation induces a wide-range of plant responses from the cellular to whole-plant scale. We demonstrate here for the first time that partial stomatal closure caused by ultraviolet radiation exposure results in significant increases in leaf temperature. Significant leaf warming in response to ultraviolet radiation was consistent in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) across different experimental approaches. In field experiments where solar ultraviolet radiation was attenuated using filters, exposure to ultraviolet radiation significantly decreased stomatal conductance and increased leaf temperature by up to 1.5°C. Using fluorescent lamps to provide ultraviolet radiation treatments, smaller but significant increases in leaf temperature due to decreases in stomatal conductance occurred in both multi-day controlled environment growth room experiments and short-term (< 2 hours) climate cabinet irradiance response experiments. We show that leaf warming due to partial stomatal closure is independent of any direct warming effects of ultraviolet radiation manipulations. We discuss the implications of ultraviolet radiation-induced warming both for horticultural crop production and understanding broader plant responses to ultraviolet radiation.

Project description:The Moon may have formed from an Earth-orbiting disk of vapor and melt produced by a giant impact.1 The Moon and Earth's mantles have similar compositions. However, it is unclear why lunar samples are more depleted in volatile elements than terrestrial mantle rocks2-3, given that an evaporative escape mechanism4 appears inconsistent with expected disk conditions.5 Dynamical models6-7 suggest that the Moon initially accreted from the outermost disk, but later acquired up to 60% of its mass from melt originating from the inner disk. Here we combine dynamical, thermal and chemical models to show that volatile depletion in the Moon can be explained by preferential accretion of volatile-rich melt in the inner disk to the Earth, rather than to the growing Moon. Melt in the inner disk is initially hot and volatile-poor, but volatiles condense as the disk cools. In our simulations, the delivery of inner disk melt to the Moon effectively ceases when gravitational interactions cause the Moon's orbit to expand away from the disk, and this termination of lunar accretion occurs prior to condensation of potassium and more volatile elements. Thus, the portion of the Moon derived from the inner disk is expected to be volatile depleted. We suggest that this mechanism may explain part or all of the Moon's volatile depletion, depending on the degree of mixing within the lunar interior.
