Project description:Active solids consume energy to allow for actuation, shape change, and wave propagation not possible in equilibrium. Whereas active interfaces have been realized across many experimental systems, control of three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials remains a challenge. Here, we develop continuum theory and microscopic simulations that describe a 3D soft solid whose boundary experiences active surface stresses. The competition between active boundary and elastic bulk yields a broad range of previously unexplored phenomena, which are demonstrations of so-called active elastocapillarity. In contrast to thin shells and vesicles, we discover that bulk 3D elasticity controls snap-through transitions between different anisotropic shapes. These transitions meet at a critical point, allowing a universal classification via Landau theory. In addition, the active surface modifies elastic wave propagation to allow zero, or even negative, group velocities. These phenomena offer robust principles for programming shape change and functionality into active solids, from robotic metamaterials down to shape-shifting nanoparticles.

Project description:Asphaltenes, heavy aromatic components of crude oil, are known to adsorb on surfaces and can lead to pipe clogging or hinder oil recovery. Because of their multicomponent structure, the details of their interactions with surfaces are complex. We investigate the effect of the physicochemical properties of the substrate on the extent and mechanism of this adsorption. Using wetting measurements, we relate the initial kinetics of deposition to the interfacial energy of the surface. We then quantify the long-term adsorption dynamics using a quartz crystal microbalance and ellipsometry. Finally, we investigate the mechanism and morphology of adsorption with force spectroscopy measurements as a function of surface chemistry. We determine different adsorption regimes differing in orientation, packing density, and initial kinetics on different substrate functionalizations. Specifically, we find that alkane substrates delay the initial monolayer formation, fluorinated surfaces exhibit fast adsorption but low bonding strength, and hydroxyl substrates lead to a different adsorption orientation and a high packing density of the asphaltene layer.

Project description:Protein adsorption modeling primarily focuses on the role of the complexities and differences in the role of the protein constituents. However, experimental evidence suggests that adsorption of human blood-borne protein molecules of widely varying size and purpose is more similar than different. A model, which treats proteins as hard, non-interacting spheres, explains the observed regularity of human blood borne protein adsorption as a result of the dominant role of the solvent in the adsorption process. Here we independently evaluate the efficacy of this model, and adjust the model to a dependence on molecular volume as opposed to molecular weight. In addition, we explore the role of adsorption-induced conformation or orientation changes, and demonstrate that volume invariant changes are well represented by this model and changes that include changes in the molecular volume are not. By focusing on molecular volume, the model can be applied to non-spherical molecules such as fibrinogen and accurately captures differences between BSA, multi-layer, and HSA, monolayer, adsorption. These findings confirm the importance of the solvent in protein adsorption, elucidate the importance of molecular volume on surface tension change, and suggest that this model is generally applicable.

Project description:The article summarizes the results of our research on the behavior of ions at uncharged fluid interfaces, with a focus on moderately to highly concentrated aqueous electrolytes. The ion-specific properties of such interfaces have been analyzed. The ion-specificity series are different for water|air and water|oil; different for surface tension σ, surface Δχ potential and electrolyte adsorption, and they change with concentration. A methodology has been developed that allows to disentangle the multiple factors controlling the ion order. The direct ion-surface interactions are not always the most significant factor behind the observed ion sequences: indirect effects stemming from conjugate bulk properties are often more important. For example, the order of the surface tension with the nature of the anion (σKOH > σKCl > σKNO3 for potassium salts) is often the result of bulk nonideality and follows the order of the bulk activity coefficients (γKOH > γKCl > γKNO3) rather than that of a specific ion-surface interaction potential. The surface Δχ potential of aqueous solutions is, in many cases, insensitive to the ion distribution in the electric double layer but reflects the orientation of water at the surface, through the ion-specific dielectric permittivity ε of the solution. Even the sign of Δχ is often the result of the decrement of ε in the presence of electrolyte. A whole new level of complexity appears when the ions interact with an uncharged surfactant monolayer. A method has been developed to measure the electrolyte adsorption isotherms on monolayers of varying area per surfactant molecule via a combination of experiments-compression isotherms and surface pressure of equilibrium spread monolayers. The obtained isotherms demonstrate that the ions exhibit a maximum in their adsorption on monolayers of intermediate density. The maximum is explained with the interplay between ion-surfactant complexation, volume exclusion and osmotic effects.

Project description:The proliferation of computer-aided design and additive manufacturing enables on-demand fabrication of complex, three-dimensional structures. However, combining the versatility of cell-laden hydrogels within the 3D printing process remains a challenge. Herein, we describe a facile and versatile method that integrates polymer networks (including hydrogels) with 3D-printed mechanical supports to fabricate multicomponent (bio)materials. The approach exploits surface tension to coat fenestrated surfaces with suspended liquid films that can be transformed into solid films. The operating parameters for the process are determined using a physical model, and complex geometric structures are successfully fabricated. We engineer, by tailoring the window geometry, scaffolds with anisotropic mechanical properties that compress longitudinally (~30% strain) without damaging the hydrogel coating. Finally, the process is amenable to high cell density encapsulation and co-culture. Viability (>95%) was maintained 28 days after encapsulation. This general approach can generate biocompatible, macroscale devices with structural integrity and anisotropic mechanical properties.

Project description:We have studied homogeneous cavitation in liquid nitrogen and normal liquid helium. We monitor the fluid content in a large number of independent mesopores with an ink-bottle shape, either when the fluid in the pores is quenched to a constant pressure or submitted to a pressure decreasing at a controlled rate. For both fluids, we show that, close enough to their critical point, the cavitation pressure threshold is in good agreement with the Classical Nucleation Theory (CNT). In contrast, at lower temperatures, deviations are observed, consistent with a reduction of the surface tension for bubbles smaller than two nanometers in radius. For nitrogen, we could accurately measure the nucleation rate as a function of the liquid pressure down to the triple point, where the critical bubble radius is about one nanometer. We find that CNT still holds, provided that the curvature dependence of the surface tension is taken into account. Furthermore, we evaluate the first- and second-order corrections in curvature, which are in reasonable agreement with recent calculations for a Lennard-Jones fluid.

Project description:In the course of animal morphogenesis, large-scale cell movements occur, which involve the rearrangement, mutual spreading, and compartmentalization of cell populations in specific configurations. Morphogenetic cell rearrangements such as cell sorting and mutual tissue spreading have been compared with the behaviors of immiscible liquids, which they closely resemble. Based on this similarity, it has been proposed that tissues behave as liquids and possess a characteristic surface tension, which arises as a collective, macroscopic property of groups of mobile, cohering cells. But how are tissue surface tensions generated? Different theories have been proposed to explain how mesoscopic cell properties such as cell-cell adhesion and contractility of cell interfaces may underlie tissue surface tensions. Although recent work suggests that both may be contributors, an explicit model for the dependence of tissue surface tension on these mesoscopic parameters has been missing. Here we show explicitly that the ratio of adhesion to cortical tension determines tissue surface tension. Our minimal model successfully explains the available experimental data and makes predictions, based on the feedback between mechanical energy and geometry, about the shapes of aggregate surface cells, which we verify experimentally. This model indicates that there is a crossover from adhesion dominated to cortical-tension dominated behavior as a function of the ratio between these two quantities.

Project description:Under certain conditions, during binary mixture adsorption in nanoporous hosts, the concentration of one component may temporarily exceed its equilibrium value. This implies that, in contrast to Fick's Law, molecules must diffuse in the direction of increasing rather than decreasing concentration. Although this phenomenon of 'overshooting' has been observed previously, it is only recently, using microimaging techniques, that diffusive fluxes in the interior of nanoporous materials have become accessible to direct observation. Here we report the application of interference microscopy to monitor 'uphill' fluxes, covering the entire period of overshooting from initiation until final equilibration. It is shown that the evolution of the profiles can be adequately predicted from the single-component diffusivities together with the binary adsorption equilibrium data. The guest molecules studied (carbon dioxide, ethane and propene) and the host material (ZSM-58 or DDR) are of practical interest in relation to the development of kinetically selective adsorption separation processes.

Project description:The surface tension of water is an important parameter for many biological or industrial processes, and roughly a factor of 3 higher than that of nonpolar liquids such as oils, which is usually attributed to hydrogen bonding and dipolar interactions. Here we show by studying the formation of water drops that the surface tension of a freshly created water surface is even higher (∼90 mN m-1) than under equilibrium conditions (∼72 mN m-1) with a relaxation process occurring on a long time scale (∼1 ms). Dynamic adsorption effects of protons or hydroxides may be at the origin of this dynamic surface tension. However, changing the pH does not significantly change the dynamic surface tension. It also seems unlikely that hydrogen bonding or dipole orientation effects play any role at the relatively long time scale probed in the experiments.

Project description:The understanding of the mechanisms involved in the interaction of proteins with inorganic surfaces is of major interest in both fundamental research and applications such as nanotechnology. However, despite intense research, the mechanisms and the structural determinants of protein/surface interactions are still unclear. We developed a strategy consisting in identifying, in a mixture of hundreds of soluble proteins, those proteins that are adsorbed on the surface and those that are not. If the two protein subsets are large enough, their statistical comparative analysis must reveal the physicochemical determinants relevant for adsorption versus non-adsorption. This methodology was tested with silica nanoparticles. We found that the adsorbed proteins contain a higher number of charged amino acids, particularly arginine, which is consistent with involvement of this basic amino acid in electrostatic interactions with silica. The analysis also identified a marked bias toward low aromatic amino acid content (phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine and histidine) in adsorbed proteins. Structural analyses and molecular dynamics simulations of proteins from the two groups indicate that non-adsorbed proteins have twice as many π-π interactions and higher structural rigidity. The data are consistent with the notion that adsorption is correlated with the flexibility of the protein and with its ability to spread on the surface. Our findings led us to propose a refined model of protein adsorption.
