ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(25)H(24)O(3), synthesized as a potential chiral catalyst, exhibits a range of C-C bond lengths in the penta-cyclo-undecane cage between 1.5144?(18) and 1.5856?(16)?Å. The two benzene rings are not planar with respect to each other, but rather are twisted at a torsion angle of 34.67?(17)°. The mol-ecule has an intra-molecular O-H?O inter-action and participates in two C-H?O inter-molecular inter-actions to form a one-dimensional chain.

Project description:The title compound, [Co(C10H15)(C2H4)2], was prepared by Na/Hg reduction of [Co2(C10H15)2(?-Cl)2] in THF under an ethyl-ene atmosphere and crystallized from pentane at 193?K. The Co-C(olefin) bonds have an average length of 2.022?(2)?Å, while the Co-C(penta-dien-yl) bonds average 2.103?(19)?Å. The olefin C=C bonds are 1.410?(1)?Å. The dihedral angle between the planes defined by the cyclo-penta-dienyl ligand and the two olefin ligands is 0.25?(12)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked into chains by C-H?? inter-actions.

The mol-ecule of the compound has four stereocenters and corresponds to the SSRR/RRSS diastereoisomer. In the mol-ecule, the maximum dihedral angle between the planar benzene rings is 80.40 (4)°. The H atoms of the hy-droxy groups are engaged in hydrogen bonding, forming infinite chains parallel to the a axis. These chains are inter-linked through water mol-ecules, resulting in the formation of a two-dimensional network parallel to the (001) plane. Futhermore C-H⋯O, C-H⋯π and slipped π-π inter-actions result in the formation of a three-dimensional network.

The penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dienyl (Cp*) ligand occupies three coordination sites, while two CO ligands and one N atom of the hexa-methyl-ene-tetra-mine ligand occupy the remaining coordination sites, completing a pseudo-octahedral geometry. Both the complex cation and the BF(4) (-) anion reside on crystallographic mirror planes. The Fe-N bond length is 2.069?(2) and the Fe-Cp*(centroid) distance is 1.7452?(3)?Å.
