Project description:To better understand the chemistry of the combustion of ethanol, the structure of five low pressure laminar premixed flames has been investigated: a pure methane flame (φ=1), three pure ethanol flames (φ=0.7, 1.0, and 1.3), and an ethanol/methane mixture flames (φ=1). The flames have been stabilized on a burner at a pressure of 6.7 kPa using argon as dilutant, with a gas velocity at the burner of 64.3 cm/s at 333 K. The results consist of mole fraction profiles of 20 species measured as a function of the height above the burner by probe sampling followed by online gas chromatography analyses. A mechanism for the oxidation of ethanol was proposed. The reactions of ethanol and acetaldehyde were updated and include recent theoretical calculations while that of ethenol, dimethyl ether, acetone, and propanal were added in the mechanism. This mechanism was also tested against experimental results available in the literature for laminar burning velocities and laminar premixed flame where ethenol was detected. The main reaction pathways of consumption of ethanol are analyzed. The effect of the branching ratios of reaction C2H5OH+OH→Products+H2O is also discussed.

Project description:An ethanol gas sensor based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with various densities and nanoparticle functionalization was investigated. The CNFs were grown by means of a Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), and the synthesis conditions were varied to obtain different number of fibers per unit area. The devices with a larger density of CNFs lead to higher responses, with a maximal responsivity of 10%. Furthermore, to simultaneously improve the sensitivity and selectivity, CNFs were decorated with gold nanoparticles by an impaction printing method. After metal decoration, the devices showed a response 300% higher than pristine devices toward 5 ppm of ethanol gas. The morphology and structure of the different samples deposited on a silicon substrate were characterized by TEM, EDX, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy, and the results confirmed the presence of CNF decorated with gold. The influence of operating temperature (OT) and humidity were studied on the sensing devices. In the case of decorated samples with a high density of nanofibers, a less-strong cross-sensitivity was observed toward a variation in humidity and temperature.

Project description:It is well-known that electric and magnetic fields can control the growth direction, morphology and microstructure of one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (1-DCNMs), which plays a key role for its potential applications in micro-nano-electrics and devices. In this paper, we introduce a novel process for controlling growth of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with assistance of a strong magnetic field (up to 0.5 T in the center) in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. The results reveal that: 1) The CNFs get bundled when grown in the presence of a strong magnetic field and slightly get aligned parallel to the direction of the magnetic field; 2) The CNFs diameter become narrowed and homogenized with increase of the magnetic field; 3) With the increase of the magnetic field, the microstructure of CNFs is gradually changed, i.e., the strong magnetic field makes the disordered "solid-cored" CNFs transform into a kind of bamboo-liked carbon nanotubes; 4) We propose a mechanism that the reason for these variations and transformation is due to diamagnetic property of carbon atoms, so that it has direction selectivity in the precipitation process.

Project description:Direct growth of MoS2 nanowalls on vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) has been achieved using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) method under an acidic condition. The acidic condition was obtained through the addition of an HCl aqueous solution. We demonstrate that the HCl not only modifies the pH value for limiting the growth rate but also leads to the formation of NaCl, which is the key for the direct and unique growth of MoS2 on the VGCNF surface. A growth mechanism is therefore proposed. The growth of MoS2 onto the high electrically conducting VGCNF creates a unique structure that not only reduces the aggregation of MoS2 but also improves the electrical conductivity of the resulting composite electrode. The MoS2 nanowall/VGCNF composite shows Csp as high as 248 F g-1 at 5?mV s-1 and excellent electrochemical stability with a retention of 96% after 1,000 cycles at a high charge rate of 200?mV s-1. The ease of composite fabrication and electrochemical stability suggest that the MoS2 nanowall/VGCNF composite is a promising candidate electrode material for supercapacitor.

Project description:Two one-dimensional hierarchical hybrid nanostructures composed of NiCo2O4 nanorods and ultrathin nanosheets on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are controllably synthesized through facile solution methods combined with a simple thermal treatment. The structure of NiCo2O4 can be easily controlled to be nanorods or nanosheets by using different additives in the synthesis. These two different nanostructures are evaluated as electrodes for high performance supercapacitors, in view of their apparent advantages, such as high electroactive surface area, ultrathin and porous features, robust mechanical strength, shorter ion and electron transport path. Their electrochemical performance is systematically studied, and both of these two hierarchical hybrid nanostructures exhibit high capacitance and excellent cycling stability. The remarkable electrochemical performance will undoubtedly make these hybrid structures attractive for high-performance supercapacitors with high power and energy densities.

Project description:Multidimensional architecture design is a promising strategy to explore unique physicochemical characteristics by synergistically integrating different structural and compositional materials. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a novel dendritic hybrid architecture, where carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with nickel sulfide nanoparticles encapsulated inside are epitaxially grown out of the porous electrospun N-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) (denoted as CNT@NS@CNFs) through a combined strategy of electrospinning and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The adopted thiophene (C4H4S) not only serves as a carbon source for the growth of CNTs but also as a sulfur source for the sulfurization of Ni particles and S-doping into carbon matrices. When examined as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the dendritic CNT@NS@CNFs display superior lithium storage properties including good cycle stability and high rate capability, delivering a high reversible capacity of 630 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 200 cycles and 277 mA h g-1 at a high rate of 1000 mA g-1. These outstanding electrochemical properties can be attributed to the novel hybrid architecture, in which the encapsulation of nickel sulfide nanoparticles within the CNT/CNFs not only efficiently buffers the volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation, but also facilitates charge transfer and electrolyte diffusion owing to the highly conductive networks with open frame structures.

Project description:Acoustically modulated methane jet diffusion flames were used to enhance carbon nanostructure synthesis. A catalytic nickel substrate was employed to collect the deposit materials at sampling position z = 10 mm above the burner exit. The fabrication of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was significantly enhanced by acoustic excitation at frequencies near the natural flickering frequency (ƒ = 20 Hz) and near the acoustically resonant frequency (ƒ = 90 Hz), respectively. At these characteristic frequencies, flow mixing was markedly enhanced by acoustic excitation, and a flame structure with a bright slender core flame was generated, which provided a favorable flame environment for the growth of carbon nanomaterials. The production rate of CNOs was high at 20 Hz (near the natural flickering frequency), at which the gas temperature was about 680 °C. Additionally, a quantity of CNTs was obtained at 70-95 Hz, near the acoustically resonant frequency, at which the gas temperature was between 665 and 830 °C. However, no carbon nanomaterials were synthesized at other frequencies. The enhanced synthesis of CNOs and CNTs is attributed to the strong mixing of the fuel and oxidizer due to the acoustic excitation at resonant frequencies.

Project description:Carbon based nanomaterials offer the potential to provide solutions to key technological challenges. This work describes the preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers by template-assisted microwave pyrolysis of environmentally friendly precursors, citric acid and polyethyleneimine, in aqueous solution. SEM reveals a dense forest of vertically aligned cylindrical carbon nanofibers with an average diameter of ca. 200 nm, which are shown by TEM to be amorphous. Compositional analysis indicated the incorporation of amino and pyrrolic nitrogen, and carbon-oxygen moieties. These species contribute to UV light absorption with an absorption shoulder and tail towards visible wavelengths. UV excitation gave visible (blue) emission at ca. 450 nm with a quantum yield of ca. 5%; emission decay under pulsed excitation was predominantly mono-exponential with a lifetime of ca. 1 ns. The emission maximum is largely excitation wavelength independent suggesting the involvement of citrazinic acid-type functionalities in the fiber photophysics. Reversible pH-dependent excitation and emission behaviour was observed, with maximum emission at ca. pH 7. Nanofiber emission was also quenched in aqueous solutions of metal cations, in a concentration-dependent manner. Single nanofiber emission intensity was quite stable under continuous excitation permitting single fiber quenching-based metal ion detection whereby a significant (>90%) and prompt (sub-10 s) quenching was observed upon exposure to sub-millimolar Fe(iii) solutions. The introduction of these new 1D luminescent carbon nanofibers offers the potential for exciting developments across a range of applications.

Project description:Nanodiamonds are emerging as new nanoscale materials because of their chemical stability, excellent crystallinity, and unique optical properties. In this study, the structure of nanodiamonds was engineered to produce carbon nano-onion particles (CNOs) with multiple layers. Following a series of physicochemical characterizations of the CNOs, various evaluations for biological responses were conducted for potential biotechnological applications of the CNOs. The possibility of biological applications was first confirmed by assessment of toxicity to animal cells, evaluation of hemolysis reactions, and evaluation of reactive oxygen species. In addition, human immune cells were evaluated for any possible induction of an immune response by CNOs. Finally, the toxicity of CNOs to Escherichia coli present in the human colon was evaluated. CNOs have the chemical and physical properties to be a unique variety of carbon nanomaterials, and their toxicity to animal and human cells is sufficiently low that their biotechnological applications in the future are expected.

Project description:The increased serum concentration of CD36 is significantly associated with atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and diabetes mellitus. Currently, there is no sensor system used for the detection of CD36 in the clinical field. Therefore, there is a need to develop a sensor system for the detection of CD36. The large surface area/volume ratio and controllable surface conformation of electrospun nanofibers (ENs) make them highly attractive for immunosensor applications. In the present study, PS/MWCNT-PAMAM ENs were produced and used as an immobilization matrix of Anti-CD36. Thus, the electrochemical behavior of the developed nanocomposite-based ENs and their usage potential were investigated for immunosensor applications. First, an oxidized multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT-OH) was synthesized and modified with a polyamidoamine generation 3 (PAMAM G3) dendrimer. The synthesized MWCNT-PAMAM nanocomposite was mixed with polystyrene (PS) solutions at different ratios to produce bead-free, smooth, and uniform PS/MWCNT-PAMAM ENs. PS/MWCNT-PAMAM ENs were accumulated on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) using the electrospinning technique. A biofunctional surface on the PS/MWCNT-PAMAM EN-coated SPCE was created using carbodiimide chemistry by covalent immobilization of Anti-CD36. The analytic performance characteristics of the developed PS/MWCNT-PAMAM/Anti-CD36 immunosensor were determined by performing electrochemical measurements in the presence of the CD36 protein. The linear detection range was found to be from 5 to 40 ng/mL, and the limit of detection was calculated as 3.94 ng/mL for CD36. The developed PS/MWCNT-PAMAM/Anti-CD36 immunosensor also displayed high tolerance to interference substances, good repeatability, and high recovery percent (recovery%) for artificial blood serum analysis.
