Project description:We report an experimental study of the 2D dynamics of active particles driven by quantum vortices on the free surface of superfluid helium at T = 1.45 К. The particle motion at short times (< 25 ms) relates to anomalous diffusion mode typical for active particles, while for longer times it corresponds to normal diffusion mode. The values of the rotational and translational kinetic energies of the particle allow to determine for the first time the intensity of the particle-vortex interaction and the dissipation rate of the vortex bundle energy. Strong bonding between a particle and a vortex is explained by coupling of normal and superfluid components.

Project description:A fundamental and intrinsic property of any device or natural system is its relaxation time relax, which is the time it takes to return to equilibrium after the sudden change of a control parameter [1]. Reducing ?relax, is frequently necessary, and is often obtained by a complex feedback process. To overcome the limitations of such an approach, alternative methods based on driving have been recently demonstrated [2, 3], for isolated quantum and classical systems [4-9]. Their extension to open systems in contact with a thermostat is a stumbling block for applications. Here, we design a protocol, named Engineered Swift Equilibration (ESE), that shortcuts time-consuming relaxations, and we apply it to a Brownian particle trapped in an optical potential whose properties can be controlled in time. We implement the process experimentally, showing that it allows the system to reach equilibrium times faster than the natural equilibration rate. We also estimate the increase of the dissipated energy needed to get such a time reduction. The method paves the way for applications in micro and nano devices, where the reduction of operation time represents as substantial a challenge as miniaturization [10].

Project description:One of the key characteristics of mesoporous films, making them attractive in many applications, is the surface enhancement gained by the porosity. Today, this attribute is rarely presented for particle-based mesoporous films. This work shows that krypton physisorption can be used to determine the available surface area of particle-based silica films synthesized by the direct growth (DiG) method. The surface area per substrate area of the films was measured to be 50-170 m2/m2 and the surface area per film volume was 310-490 m2/cm3 when the film thickness was varied between 100 and 520 nm. For comparison, a 105 nm thick film synthesized using dip-coating was used, as this technique renders more smooth films. The corresponding values for the dip-coated film was 90 m2/m2 and 880 m2/cm3, showing a higher surface area per film volume for the continuous film. The method is hence suitable for the characterization of mesoporous films synthesized with various techniques and can be used for the optimization of catalysts, drug delivery systems, and sensors.

Project description:One single-particle reconstruction technique is the reconstruction of macromolecules from projection images of randomly oriented particles (SPRR). In SPRR the reliability and consequent interpretation of the final reconstruction is affected by errors arising from incorrect assignment of projection angles to individual particles. In order to improve the resolution of SPRR we studied the influence of imperfect assignment on 3D blurring. We find that this blurring can be described as a Point Spread Function (PSF) that depends on the distance from geometrical center of the reconstructed volume and that blurring is higher at the periphery. This particular PSF can be described by an almost pure tangential angular function with a negligible radial component. We have developed a reliable algorithm for spherical deconvolution of the 3D reconstruction. This spherical deconvolution operation was tested on reconstructions of GroEL and mitochondrial ribosomes. We show that spherical deconvolution improves the quality of SPRR by reducing blurring and enhancing high frequency components, particularly near the periphery of the reconstruction.

Project description:A body with mechanical sensors may remotely detect particles suspended in the surrounding fluid via controlled agitation. Here we propose a sensory mode that relies on generating unsteady flow and sensing particle-induced distortions in the flow field. We demonstrate the basic physical principle in a simple analytical model, which consists of a small spherical particle at some distance from a plate undergoing impulsive or oscillatory motion. The model shows that changes in pressure or shear on the plate can be used to infer the location and size of the sphere. The key ingredient is to produce strong shear or strain around the sphere, which requires careful tuning of the viscous boundary layer on the moving plate. This elucidates how some organisms and devices may control their unsteady dynamics to enhance their range of perception.

Project description:Physical chemical characterization of nanomaterials is critical to assessing quality control during production, evaluating the impact of material properties on human health and the environment, and developing regulatory frameworks for their use. We have investigated a set of 29 nanomaterials from four metal oxide families (aluminum, copper, titanium and zinc) with a focus on the measurands that are important for the basic characterization of dry nanomaterials and the determination of the dose metrics for nanotoxicology. These include crystalline phase and crystallite size, measured by powder X-ray diffraction, particle shape and size distributions from transmission electron microscopy, and specific surface area, measured by gas adsorption. The results are compared to the nominal data provided by the manufacturer, where available. While the crystalline phase data are generally reliable, data on minor components that may impact toxicity is often lacking. The crystal and particle size data highlight the issues in obtaining size measurements of materials with broad size distributions and significant levels of aggregation, and indicate that reliance on nominal values provided by the manufacturer is frequently inadequate for toxicological studies aimed at identifying differences between nanoforms. The data will be used for the development of models and strategies for grouping and read-across to support regulatory human health and environmental assessments of metal oxide nanomaterials.

Project description:BackgroundBrownian Dynamics (BD) is a coarse-grained implicit-solvent simulation method that is routinely used to investigate binary protein association dynamics, but due to its efficiency in handling large simulation volumes and particle numbers it is well suited to also describe many-protein scenarios as they often occur in biological cells.ResultsHere we introduce our "brownmove" simulation package which was designed to handle many-particle problems with varying particle numbers and allows for a very flexible definition of rigid and flexible protein and polymer models. Both a Brownian and a Langevin dynamics (LD) propagation scheme can be used and hydrodynamic interactions are treated efficiently with our recently introduced TEA-HI ansatz [Geyer, Winter, JCP 130 (2009) 114905]. With simulations of constrained polymers and flexible models of spherical proteins we demonstrate that it is crucial to include hydrodynamics when multi-bead models are used in BD or LD simulations. Only then both the translational and the rotational diffusion coefficients and the timescales of the internal dynamics can be reproduced correctly. In the third example project we show how constant density boundary conditions [Geyer et al, JCP 120 (2004) 4573] can be used to set up a non-equilibrium simulation of diffusional transport across an array of fixed obstacles. Finally, we demonstrate how the agglomeration dynamics of multiple particles with attractive patches can be analysed conveniently with the help of a dynamic interaction network.ConclusionsCombining BD and LD propagation, fast hydrodynamics, a flexible protein model, and interfaces for "open" simulation settings, our freely available "brownmove" simulation package constitutes a new platform for coarse-grained many-particle simulations of biologically relevant diffusion and transport processes.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Although epidemiologic studies have shown associations between particle mass and daily mortality, evidence on other particle metrics is weak. OBJECTIVES:We investigated associations of size-specific particle number concentration (PNC) and lung-deposited particle surface area concentration (PSC) with cause-specific daily mortality in contrast to PM10. METHODS:We used time-series data (March 2009-December 2014) on daily natural, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality (NM, CVM, RM) of three adjacent cities in the Ruhr Area, Germany. Size-specific PNC (electric mobility diameter of 13.3-750?nm), PSC, and PM10 were measured at an urban background monitoring site. In single- and multipollutant Poisson regression models, we estimated percentage change (95% confidence interval) [% (95% CI)] in mortality per interquartile range (IQR) in exposure at single-day (0-7) and aggregated lags (0-1, 2-3, 4-7), accounting for time trend, temperature, humidity, day of week, holidays, period of seasonal population decrease, and influenza. RESULTS:PNC100-750 and PSC were highly correlated and had similar immediate (lag0-1) and delayed (lag4-7) associations with NM and CVM, for example, 1.12% (95% CI: 0.09, 2.33) and 1.56% (95% CI: 0.22, 2.92) higher NM with IQR increases in PNC100-750 at lag0-1 and lag4-7, respectfully, which were slightly stronger then associations with IQR increases in PM10. Positive associations between PNC and NM were strongest for accumulation mode particles (PNC 100-500?nm), and for larger UFPs (PNC 50-100?nm). Associations between NM and PNC<100 changed little after adjustment for O3 or PM10, but were more sensitive to adjustment for NO2. CONCLUSION:Size-specific PNC (50-500?nm) and lung-deposited PSC were associated with natural and cardiovascular mortality in the Ruhr Area. Although associations were similar to those estimated for an IQR increase in PM10, particle number size distributions can be linked to emission sources, and thus may be more informative for potential public health interventions. Moreover, PSC could be used as an alternative metric that integrates particle size distribution as well as deposition efficiency. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP2054.

Project description:Colloidal gels have unique properties due to a complex microstructure which forms into an extended network. Although the bulk properties of colloidal gels have been studied, there has been difficulty correlating those properties with individual colloidal dynamics on the microscale due to the very high viscosity and elasticity of the material. We utilize rotational X-ray tracking (RXT) to investigate the rotational motion of component crystalline colloidal particles in a colloidal gel of alumina and decanoic acid. Our investigation has determined that the high elasticity of the bulk is echoed by a high elasticity experienced by individual colloidal particles themselves but also finds an unexpected high degree of rotational diffusion, indicating a large degree of freedom in the rotational motion of individual colloids even within a tightly bound system.

Project description:We compute the entropy production engendered in the environment from a single Brownian particle which moves in a gradient flow, and show that it corresponds in expectation to classical near-equilibrium entropy production in the surrounding fluid with specific mesoscopic transport coefficients. With temperature gradient, extra terms are found which result from the nonlinear interaction between the particle and the non-equilibrated environment. The calculations are based on the fluctuation relations which relate entropy production to the probabilities of stochastic paths and carried out in a multi-time formalism.
