Project description:This paper is the first studying on designing exponentially passive analysis for T-S fuzzy of dynamic systems with various time-varying delays such as neutral, discrete, and distributed time-varying delays. Constructing the new Lyapunov-Krasovskii function and the Newton-Leibniz theory, the zero equations, and the matrix inequality techniques, the multiple delay-dependent criteria, with assuring exponentially passive on the discussed T-S fuzzy system, are defined in respect of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) that can be checked easily using the LMI toolbox of MATLAB. Those approaches give less conservative, exponentially passive criteria for special cases of general stability of a neutral differential system. Furthermore, the results of this study are delay-dependent, which depend on the lower and upper bound with the time-varying delay. Lastly, some numerical examples illustrate the performance of our criteria based on the results obtained and summarize some of the previous achievements.

Project description:Neural systems display rich short-term dynamics at various levels, e.g., spike-frequency adaptation (SFA) at the single-neuron level, and short-term facilitation (STF) and depression (STD) at the synapse level. These dynamical features typically cover a broad range of time scales and exhibit large diversity in different brain regions. It remains unclear what is the computational benefit for the brain to have such variability in short-term dynamics. In this study, we propose that the brain can exploit such dynamical features to implement multiple seemingly contradictory computations in a single neural circuit. To demonstrate this idea, we use continuous attractor neural network (CANN) as a working model and include STF, SFA and STD with increasing time constants in its dynamics. Three computational tasks are considered, which are persistent activity, adaptation, and anticipative tracking. These tasks require conflicting neural mechanisms, and hence cannot be implemented by a single dynamical feature or any combination with similar time constants. However, with properly coordinated STF, SFA and STD, we show that the network is able to implement the three computational tasks concurrently. We hope this study will shed light on the understanding of how the brain orchestrates its rich dynamics at various levels to realize diverse cognitive functions.

Project description:Proxy temperature data records featuring local time series, regional averages from areas all around the globe, as well as global averages, are analyzed using the Slow Feature Analysis (SFA) method. As explained in the paper, SFA is much more effective than the traditional Fourier analysis in identifying slow-varying (low-frequency) signals in data sets of a limited length. We find the existence of a striking gap from ~1000 to about ~20,000 years, which separates intrinsic climatic oscillations with periods ranging from ~60 years to ~1000 years, from the longer time-scale periodicities (20,000 year+) involving external forcing associated with Milankovitch cycles. The absence of natural oscillations with periods within the gap is consistent with cumulative evidence based on past data analyses, as well as with earlier theoretical and modeling studies.

Project description:The question of finite-time blowup of the 3D incompressible Euler equations is numerically investigated in a periodic cylinder with solid boundaries. Using rotational symmetry, the equations are discretized in the (2D) meridian plane on an adaptive (moving) mesh and is integrated in time with adaptively chosen time steps. The vorticity is observed to develop a ring-singularity on the solid boundary with a growth proportional to ∼(ts - t)(-2.46), where ts ∼ 0.0035056 is the estimated singularity time. A local analysis also suggests the existence of a self-similar blowup. The simulations stop at τ(2) = 0.003505 at which time the vorticity amplifies by more than (3 × 10(8))-fold and the maximum mesh resolution exceeds (3 × 10(12))(2). The vorticity vector is observed to maintain four significant digits throughout the computations.

Project description:An analytic study was conducted on coupled partial differential equations. We formally derived new solitary wave solutions of generalized coupled system of Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) and KdV equations by using modified extended tanh method. The traveling wave solutions for each generalized coupled system of ZK and KdV equations are shown in form of periodic, dark, and bright solitary wave solutions. The structures of the obtained solutions are distinct and stable.

Project description:The question of how Earth's climate is stabilized on geologic time scales is important for understanding Earth's history, long-term consequences of anthropogenic climate change, and planetary habitability. Here, we quantify the typical amplitude of past global temperature fluctuations on time scales from hundreds to tens of millions of years and use it to assess the presence or absence of long-term stabilizing feedbacks in the climate system. On time scales between 4 and 400 ka, fluctuations fail to grow with time scale, suggesting that stabilizing mechanisms like the hypothesized "weathering feedback" have exerted dominant control in this regime. Fluctuations grow on longer time scales, potentially due to tectonically or biologically driven changes that make weathering act as a climate forcing and a feedback. These slower fluctuations show no evidence of being damped, implying that chance may still have played a nonnegligible role in maintaining the long-term habitability of Earth.

Project description:In this paper, we present a formal quantification of uncertainty induced by numerical solutions of ordinary and partial differential equation models. Numerical solutions of differential equations contain inherent uncertainties due to the finite-dimensional approximation of an unknown and implicitly defined function. When statistically analysing models based on differential equations describing physical, or other naturally occurring, phenomena, it can be important to explicitly account for the uncertainty introduced by the numerical method. Doing so enables objective determination of this source of uncertainty, relative to other uncertainties, such as those caused by data contaminated with noise or model error induced by missing physical or inadequate descriptors. As ever larger scale mathematical models are being used in the sciences, often sacrificing complete resolution of the differential equation on the grids used, formally accounting for the uncertainty in the numerical method is becoming increasingly more important. This paper provides the formal means to incorporate this uncertainty in a statistical model and its subsequent analysis. We show that a wide variety of existing solvers can be randomised, inducing a probability measure over the solutions of such differential equations. These measures exhibit contraction to a Dirac measure around the true unknown solution, where the rates of convergence are consistent with the underlying deterministic numerical method. Furthermore, we employ the method of modified equations to demonstrate enhanced rates of convergence to stochastic perturbations of the original deterministic problem. Ordinary differential equations and elliptic partial differential equations are used to illustrate the approach to quantify uncertainty in both the statistical analysis of the forward and inverse problems.

Project description:Biological membranes are highly dynamic and complex lipid bilayers, responsible for the fate of living cells. To achieve this function, the hydrating environment is crucial. However, membrane imaging typically neglects water, focusing on the insertion of probes, resonant responses of lipids, or the hydrophobic core. Owing to a recent improvement of second-harmonic (SH) imaging throughput by three orders of magnitude, we show here that we can use SH microscopy to follow membrane hydration of freestanding lipid bilayers on millisecond time scales. Instead of using the UV/VIS resonant response of specific membrane-inserted fluorophores to record static SH images over time scales of >1,000 s, we SH imaged symmetric and asymmetric lipid membranes, while varying the ionic strength and pH of the adjacent solutions. We show that the nonresonant SH response of water molecules aligned by charge-dipole interactions with charged lipids can be used as a label-free probe of membrane structure and dynamics. Lipid domain diffusion is imaged label-free by means of the hydration of charged domains. The orientational ordering of water is used to construct electrostatic membrane potential maps. The average membrane potential depends quadratically on an applied external bias, which is modeled by nonlinear optical theory. Spatiotemporal fluctuations on the order of 100-mV changes in the membrane potential are seen. These changes imply that membranes are very dynamic, not only in their structure but also in their membrane potential landscape. This may have important consequences for membrane function, mechanical stability, and protein/pore distributions.

To obtain the desired results, we employ the Banach fixed point theorem (BFPT), a nonlinear variation of the Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem (SFPT), and the Krasnoselski fixed point theorem (KFPT). Additionally, we provide illustrative examples that demonstrate the key findings. Furthermore, we address a scenario where an initial value integral condition is considered.
