The gnd gene, encoding 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.44), was sequenced in 87 strains of 15 species assigned to five nominal genera of the Enterobacteriaceae, including 36 isolates of Salmonella enterica and 32 strains of Escherichia coli. In S. enterica, the effective (realized) rate of recombination of horizontally transferred gnd sequences is only moderately higher than the rates for other chromosomal housekeeping genes.
