Many eukaryotic cell surface proteins are bound to the membrane via the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor that is covalently linked to their carboxy-terminus. The GPI anchor precursor is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and post-translationally linked to protein.
