A new record of the rare alga Pachycladella P. C. Silva (Chlorophyceae) in New England.

ABSTRACT: A rarely reported taxon, the microscopic green alga Pachycladella, was found in a pond in Connecticut. Due to an unresolved taxonomic debate within the genus, the species-level identity of the newly discovered population cannot be determined with absolute certainty. However, according to the currently accepted classification the Connecticut specimens best match Pachycladella zatoriensis, heretofore only known from Europe. The find represents not only the first record of Pachycladella in Connecticut, but also in the entire New England region. This study highlights the need for continuing floristic surveys even in regions previously well explored.

Pleurastrosarcina terriformae, a new species of a rare desert trebouxiophycean alga discovered by an integrative approach.

Project description:Biological soil crusts of extreme habitats (semi-deserts and deserts) are dominated by cyanobacteria and microalgae. The most abundant taxa are green algae belonging to the classes Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae. Specimens with sarcinoid-like morphology (cells arranged in packages) represent one group of these microalgae. The genus Pleurastrosarcina consists of two species, which were originally described as Chlorosarcina (P. brevispinosa and P. longispinosa). Both species are exclusively found from arid soils. However, these species were only reported few times and probably overlooked especially if no akinetes were present. During studying soil samples collected from different regions of the Atacama desert (Chile), we isolated two strains, which were morphologically similar to both Pleurastrosarcina species. The phylogenetic analyses confirmed that they belong to this genus. The ITS-2/CBC approach revealed that both new isolates represent a new species, P. terriformae. The comparison with other available strains demonstrated that this new species is not restricted to South America and was also found in coastal area in Europe. The six investigated strains showed a high phenotypic plasticity, which is reflected in the descriptions of several varieties.

The habitat-modifying red alga Ramicrusta on Pacific reefs: A new generic record for the Tropical Northwestern Pacific and the description of four new species from Guam.

Project description:The genus Ramicrusta (order Peyssonneliales) is a new record for Micronesia, with range expansions of Ramicrusta fujiiana and R. lateralis to Guam. In addition, four species (Ramicrusta adjoulanensis, R. asanitensis, R. labtasiensis, and R. taogamensis) are newly described from Guam using molecular and anatomical characters. Ramicrusta lateralis specimens from Guam share most anatomical features with the holotype description from Vanuatu, but the plants from Guam are more tightly adherent, rigid, and robust than those of Vanuatu. Ramicrusta adjoulanensis possesses a well-developed epithallus with frequent cell fusions, secondary pit connections, and lacking hair bases or trichocytes, similar to Ramicrusta bonairensis. Ramicrusta adjoulanensis differs from other Ramicrusta species in having occasionally free margins and being attached by frequently produced, relatively long rhizoids (75-100 μm long). Ramicrusta asanitensis shares features with many other species, but the thickness of the crust (upwards of 2 mm thick), heavy calcification in the epithallus, and the extent of secondary, tertiary, and quaternary growth, differentiate it from other Ramicrusta species. Ramicrusta labtasiensis shares features with its close relative Ramicrusta lateralis but possesses frequent, robust, and relatively long rhizoids (75-95 μm long) throughout its entire undersurface. Ramicrusta taogamensis resembles its close relative Ramicrusta appressa but is primarily distinguished by its generally well-developed epithallus with occasional secondary pit connections and cell fusions. The six species reported here make Guam equal to Vanuatu in currently having the highest known species richness of Ramicrusta in the world.

Rare Acetogenins with Anti-Inflammatory Effect from the Red Alga Laurencia obtusa.

Project description:Three new rare C12 acetogenins (enyne derivatives 1⁻3) were isolated from the organic extract obtained from the red alga Laurencia obtusa, collected from the Red Sea. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were established by spectroscopical data analyses. Potent anti-inflammatory effect of the isolated metabolites was evidenced by inhibition of the release of inflammatory mediators (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) by employing Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC).

Project description:Typhrasa is a rare genus that comprises two species and that has previously been reported only from Europe and North America. The present study expands the geographical scope of the genus by describing two new species - T. polycystis and T. rugocephala - from subtropical China. The new species are supported by morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU and tef-1α). The new species have very similar morphological characteristics and are 98% similar in their ITS region. However, T. rugocephala has two types of long gills at the same time, rarely fusiform pleurocystidia with rostrum. Detailed descriptions, colour photos, illustrations and a key to related species are presented in this paper.
