Project description:The present work exhibits the effects of Sn addition on the magnetic properties and microstructure of FeCoNi(CuAl)0.8Snx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) high-entropy alloys (HEAs). The results show all the samples consist of a mixed structure of face-centered-cubic (FCC) phase and body-centered-cubic (BCC) phase. The addition of Sn promotes the formation of BCC phase, and it also affects the shape of Cu-rich nano-precipitates in BCC matrix. It also shows that the Curie temperatures (Tc) of the FCC phase and the saturation magnetization (Ms) of the FeCoNi(CuAl)0.8Snx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) HEAs increase greatly while the remanence (Br) decreases after the addition of Sn into FeCoNi(CuAl)0.8 HEA. The thermomagnetic curves indicate that the phases of the FeCoNi(CuAl)0.8Snx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) HEAs will transform from FCC with low Tc to BCC phase with high Tc at temperature of 600-700 K. This work provides a new idea for FeCoNi(CuAl)0.8Snx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) HEAs for their potential application as soft magnets to be used at high temperatures.

Project description:Heusler type Ni-Mn-Ga ferromagnetic shape memory alloys can demonstrate excellent magnetic shape memory effect in single crystals. However, such effect in polycrystalline alloys is greatly weakened due to the random distribution of crystallographic orientation. Microstructure optimization and texture control are of great significance and challenge to improve the functional behaviors of polycrystalline alloys. In this paper, we summarize our recent progress on the microstructure control in polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga alloys in the form of bulk alloys, melt-spun ribbons and thin films, based on the detailed crystallographic characterizations through neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. The presented results are expected to offer some guidelines for the microstructure modification and functional performance control of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys.

Project description:Structural analysis of epitaxial layers of the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) quaternary dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS), together with investigations of their magnetotransport properties, has been thoroughly performed. The obtained results are compared with those for the reference (Ga,Mn)As layers, grown under similar conditions, with the aim to reveal an impact of Bi incorporation on the properties of this DMS material. Incorporation of Bi into GaAs strongly enhances the spin-orbit coupling strength in this semiconductor, and the same has been expected for the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) alloy. In turn, importantly for specific spintronic applications, strong spin-orbit coupling in ferromagnetic systems opens a possibility of directly controlling the direction of magnetization by the electric current. Our investigations, performed with high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy, demonstrate that the (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) layers of high structural quality and smooth interfaces can be grown by means of the low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy method, despite a large difference between the sizes of Bi and As atoms. Depending on the applied buffer layer, the DMS layers can be grown under either compressive or tensile misfit strain, which influences their magnetic properties. It is shown that even small 1% Bi content in the layers strongly affects their magnetoelectric properties, such as the coercive field and anisotropic magnetoresistance.

Project description:The behavior of γ-β/β0 phase transition in TiAl alloy doped with β stabilizers (V, Cr, Mn) are studied by using the first principles method. It is found that alloying addition as well as anharmonic lattice vibration and disordered atomic occupation contributes to enhance the stability of cubic structure and accordingly introduce the disordered β phase into the high-temperature microstructure. The formation of low-temperature β0 phase originates from not only the stabilization of cubic structure but also the destabilization of tetragonal structure. In particular, the latter is the main reason for the premature precipitation of the hard-brittle β0 phase in the room-temperature microstructure at low nominal doping concentrations. We also find a special doping region in which the γ and the β phases are stable, while the β0 phase is unstable. The existence of this region provides an opportunity for the regulation of the contents of β and β0 phases.

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper is supporting the research article "Enhanced magnetic refrigeration capacity in Ni-Mn-Ga micro-particles" (Qian, et al., 2018) [1]. The martensite transformation temperature (Ms ) and the Curie point (Tc ) of the annealed alloys with nominal composition Ni55-xMn20+xGa25 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, atomic percent, labeled as A1, A2, A3 and A4, respectively) varied with x, yielding a temperature difference Tc -Mc of 7.2 K at x = 0.5 (A3). The magnetization difference (ΔM) between the austenite and martensite, the field dependence of transformation temperature (ΔT/ΔH) and the thermal hysteresis loss of A3 and the according stress relief annealing (SRA) particles were demonstrated. The isothermal magnetization curves of A3 and the SRA particles were measured in order to determine the magnetocaloric effect.

Project description:Single crystalline Ni-Mn-Ga is well known as a prototype ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) exhibiting a giant magnetic field-induced strain (MFIS), up to 12%, due to the magnetically driven twin boundary rearrangement. The large stroke and fast magnetomechanical response make it important for actuators and sensors. Polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga is inexpensive and technologically easy accessible, but constrains from the grain boundaries inhibit the twin boundary motion, whereby a very low MFIS is observed. Here, we have shown for the first time that a polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga can be split into the magnetostrain-active single grains which, being specially assembled in a silicone polymer matrix, caused large and fully reversible MFIS of the resulting composite. We termed the unique reversibility of a large MFIS of the composite as the magnetic field-induced rubber-like behavior. The magnetostrain of individual particles was explored by the X-ray μCT 3D imaging. The results suggest novel solutions for development of the low cost magnetic actuators and sensors for haptic applications.

Project description:In the absent of magnetic field, we have observed the anisotropic spin polarization degree of photoconduction (SPD-PC) in (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs heterojunction. We think three kinds of mechanisms contribute to the magnetic related signal, (i) (Ga,Mn)As self-producing due to the valence band polarization, (ii) unequal intensity of left and right circularly polarized light reaching to GaAs layer to excite unequal spin polarized carriers in GaAs layer, and (iii) (Ga,Mn)As as the spin filter layer for spin transport from GaAs to (Ga,Mn)As. Different from the previous experiments, the influence coming from the Zeeman splitting induced by an external magnetic field can be avoided here. While temperature dependence experiment indicates that the SPD-PC is mixed with the magnetic uncorrelated signals, which may come from current induced spin polarization.

Project description:Analysis and design of materials and fluids requires understanding of the fundamental relationships between structure, composition, and properties. Dislocations and grain boundaries influence microstructure evolution through the enhancement of diffusion and by facilitating heterogeneous nucleation, where atoms must overcome a potential barrier to enable the early stage of formation of a phase. Adsorption and spinodal decomposition are known precursor states to nucleation and phase transition; however, nucleation remains the less well-understood step in the complete thermodynamic sequence that shapes a microstructure. Here, we report near-atomic-scale observations of a phase transition mechanism that consists in solute adsorption to crystalline defects followed by linear and planar spinodal fluctuations in an Fe-Mn model alloy. These fluctuations provide a pathway for austenite nucleation due to the higher driving force for phase transition in the solute-rich regions. Our observations are supported by thermodynamic calculations, which predict the possibility of spinodal decomposition due to magnetic ordering.

Project description:High-entropy alloys have exhibited unusual materials properties. The stability of equimolar single-phase solid solution of five or more elements is supposedly rare and identifying the existence of such alloys has been challenging because of the vast chemical space of possible combinations. Herein, based on high-throughput density-functional theory calculations, we construct a chemical map of single-phase equimolar high-entropy alloys by investigating over 658,000 equimolar quinary alloys through a binary regular solid-solution model. We identify 30,201 potential single-phase equimolar alloys (5% of the possible combinations) forming mainly in body-centered cubic structures. We unveil the chemistries that are likely to form high-entropy alloys, and identify the complex interplay among mixing enthalpy, intermetallics formation, and melting point that drives the formation of these solid solutions. We demonstrate the power of our method by predicting the existence of two new high-entropy alloys, i.e. the body-centered cubic AlCoMnNiV and the face-centered cubic CoFeMnNiZn, which are successfully synthesized.

Project description:In Nd2Fe14B-based permanent materials, the intergranular phase has a strong influence on magnetic properties. Here, we study the effect of partial substitution of Fe by Co on the microstructure to gain insight into the mechanism of enhancing magnetic properties of (Nd0.8Pr0.2)2.2Fe14-xCoxB (x = 0, 1.75, 2, 2.25) alloys. Our results show that the substitution Co for Fe changes the magnetic properties obviously by tuning the chemistry and distribution of the intergranular phase between hard magnetic grains. In particular, for (Nd0.8Pr0.2)2.2Fe12Co2B (x = 2) alloy, no obvious intergranular phase is observed. And the through-thickness homogeneity and ultrafine microstructure with an average size of ~25 nm is obtained, which produces maximum product ((BH)max) of 141 kJ/m3, 29% higher than that of quaternary alloy. Our findings provide a new idea to design prospective permanent alloys with increased magnetic properties by tuning the distribution and chemical composition of the intergranular phase.
