Synthesis of cyanopyridine based conjugated polymer.

ABSTRACT: This data file contains the detailed synthetic procedure for the synthesis of two new cyanopyridine based conjugated polymer P1 and P2 along with the synthesis of its monomers. The synthesised polymers can be used for electroluminescence and photovoltaic (PV) application. The physical data of the polymers are provided in this data file along with the morphological data of the polymer thin films. The data provided here are in association with the research article entitled 'Cyanopyridine based conjugated polymer-synthesis and characterisation' (Hemavathi et al., 2015) [3].

Design, Synthesis, and Application in OFET of a Quinoxaline-Based D-A Conjugated Polymer.

Project description:A novel alternating donor-acceptor polymer PQ1 is designed and synthesized by palladium-catalyzed Stille coupling between quinoxaline as an electron-deficient unit and indacenodithiophene (IDT) as electron-rich groups. Polymer PQ1 presents not only a strong intramolecular charge transfer effect, which is beneficial for the charge transport within single molecules but also a narrow electrochemical band gap and a high highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level. In addition, the optical absorption study indicates that the PQ1 film exhibits good aggregation, which is an advantage for the charge transport between neighboring molecules. As a consequence, PQ1 presents p-type semiconductor properties with a high hole mobility of up to 0.12 cm2 V-1 s-1. This study reveals the great potential of quinoxaline-type chromophores in constructing novel organic semiconductors.

Integrated circuits based on conjugated polymer monolayer.

Project description:It is still a great challenge to fabricate conjugated polymer monolayer field-effect transistors (PoM-FETs) due to intricate crystallization and film formation of conjugated polymers. Here we demonstrate PoM-FETs based on a single monolayer of a conjugated polymer. The resulting PoM-FETs are highly reproducible and exhibit charge carrier mobilities reaching 3?cm2?V-1?s-1. The high performance is attributed to the strong interactions of the polymer chains present already in solution leading to pronounced edge-on packing and well-defined microstructure in the monolayer. The high reproducibility enables the integration of discrete unipolar PoM-FETs into inverters and ring oscillators. Real logic functionality has been demonstrated by constructing a 15-bit code generator in which hundreds of self-assembled PoM-FETs are addressed simultaneously. Our results provide the state-of-the-art example of integrated circuits based on a conjugated polymer monolayer, opening prospective pathways for bottom-up organic electronics.

?-Conjugated Microporous Polymer Films: Designed Synthesis, Conducting Properties, and Photoenergy Conversions.

Project description:Conjugated microporous polymers are a unique class of polymers that combine extended ?-conjugation with inherent porosity. However, these polymers are synthesized through solution-phase reactions to yield insoluble and unprocessable solids, which preclude not only the evaluation of their conducting properties but also the fabrication of thin films for device implementation. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of thin films of ?-conjugated microporous polymers by designing thiophene-based electropolymerization at the solution-electrode interface. High-quality films are prepared on a large area of various electrodes, the film thickness is controllable, and the films are used for device fabrication. These films are outstanding hole conductors and, upon incorporation of fullerenes into the pores, function as highly efficient photoactive layers for energy conversions. Our film strategy may boost the applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

A Redox Conjugated Polymer-Based All-Solid-State Reference Electrode.

Project description:This work reports the design, synthesis, and characterization of a novel redox-active conjugated polyaniline containing quinone moiety as a solid state reference electrode. The union of electro-active quinone with ?-conjugated polyaniline was created by the first chemical synthesis of para-dimethoxybenzene-functionalized aniline as a monomer using a palladium-mediated coupling. The successful polymerization of the as-prepared monomer was accomplished without acid additives. Its post-polymerization modification with strong Lewis acid boron tribromide furnished unique poly (aniline quinone/hydroquinone) with desired properties for all-solid-state reference electrode (RE) applications. The electrochemical responses from the conjugated polyaniline backbone in this unique polymer have been "suppressed" by the quinone pendant. The resulting poly (aniline quinone) showed a quasi-reversible redox process from the redox behavior of the pendant quinone. The stable electrode potential of this poly (aniline quinone/hydroquinone) suggested that it was a single phase in which the amounts of totally reduced and totally oxidized species could be maintained at a constant in various solvents and electrolytes. Its electrochemical stability was excellent with 95% peak current retention after continuous cyclic voltammetric testing. The aniline and quinone moieties in poly (aniline quinone/hydroquinone) render it to have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compatibility. It showed excellent behavior as a reference electrode in aqueous and non-aqueous media and can be used in both non-zero current and zero-current conditions, providing a stable potential with a maximum potential drift of ~4.7 mV over ten consecutive days.

Conjugated polymer-based fluorescence turn-on sensor for nitric oxide.

Project description:A turn-on fluorescent sensor for NO (g) in solution was synthesized using a bipyridyl-substituted poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative (CP1) as the sensory scaffold. The action of NO (g) upon the CP1-Cu(II) complex reduces it to the CP1-Cu(I) complex with a concomitant 2.8-fold increase in emission intensity. The reagent is selective for NO (g) versus other biological reactive nitrogen species, except for nitroxyl, and has a detection sensitivity limit of 6.3 nM. [structure: see text]

Polymer Labelling with a Conjugated Polymer-Based Luminescence Probe for Recycling in the Circular Economy.

Project description:In this paper, we present the use of a disubstituted polyacetylene with high thermal stability and quantum yield as a fluorescence label for the identification, tracing, recycling, and eventually anti-counterfeiting applications of thermoplastics. A new method was developed for the dispersion of poly[1-phenyl-2-[p-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl]acetylene] (PTMSDPA) into polymer blends. For such purposes, four representative commodity plastics were selected, i.e., polypropylene, low-density polyethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polylactide. Polymer recycling was mimicked by two reprocessing cycles of the material, which imparted intensive luminescence to the labelled polymer blends when excited by proper illumination. The concentration of the labelling polymer in the matrices was approximately a few tens ppm by weight. Luminescence was visible to the naked eye and survived the simulated recycling successfully. In addition, luminescence emission maxima were correlated with polymer polarity and glass transition temperature, showing a marked blueshift in luminescence emission maxima with the increase in processing temperature and time. This blueshift results from the dispersion of the labelling polymer into the labelled polymer matrix. During processing, the polyacetylene chains disentangled, thereby suppressing their intermolecular interactions. Moreover, shear forces imposed during viscous polymer melt mixing enforced conformational changes, which shortened the average conjugation length of PTMSDPA chain segments. Combined, these two mechanisms shift the luminescence of the probe from a solid- to a more solution-like state. Thus, PTMSDPA can be used as a luminescent probe for dispersion quality, polymer blend homogeneity, and processing history, in addition to the identification, tracing, and recycling of thermoplastics.

Chiral Dibenzopentalene-Based Conjugated Nanohoops through Stereoselective Synthesis.

Project description:Conjugated nanohoops allow to investigate the effect of radial conjugation and bending on the involved π-systems. They can possess unexpected optoelectronic properties and their radially oriented π-system makes them attractive for host-guest chemistry. Bending the π-subsystems can lead to chiral hoops. Herein, we report the stereoselective synthesis of two enantiomers of chiral conjugated nanohoops by incorporating dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes (DBPs), which are generated in the last synthetic step from enantiomerically pure diketone precursors. Owing to its bent shape, this diketone unit was used as the only bent precursor and novel "corner unit" in the synthesis of the hoops. The [6]DBP[4]Ph-hoops contain six antiaromatic DBP units and four bridging phenylene groups. The small HOMO-LUMO gap and ambipolar electrochemical character of the DBP units is reflected in the optoelectronic properties of the hoop. Electronic circular dichroism spectra and MD simulations showed that the chiral hoop did not racemize even when heated to 110 °C. Due to its large diameter, it was able to accommodate two C60 molecules, as binding studies indicate.

Synthesis of a Conjugated D-A Polymer with Bi(disilanobithiophene) as a New Donor Component.

Project description:A new conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) polymer pDSBT2-BT containing bi(disilano-bisthiophene) and benzothiadiazole as donor and acceptor units, respectively, was prepared. The polymer showed a broad UV-vis absorption band at ?max = 599 nm in chlorobenzene. The absorption band was shifted to ?max = 629 nm when the polymer was measured as a film, indicating enhanced interchain interactions of the polymer. Bulk hetero-junction polymer solar cells (BHJ-PSCs) were fabricated using pDSBT2-BT and PC71BM as host and guest materials, respectively. Optimization of cell fabrication conditions provided a maximal power conversion efficiency of 3.3% and the following cell parameters: Voc = 0.86 V, Jsc = 7.56 mA/cm², and FF = 0.51. Although the efficiency still leaves much to be desired, these data underscore the potential of pDSBT2-BT as a high-voltage polymer solar cell material.

Synthesis and Acid-Responsiveness of an Insulated π-Conjugated Polymer Containing Spiropyrans in Its Backbone.

Project description:A π-conjugated polymer containing spiropyrans (SPs), which could be almost completely converted to protonated merocyanines (MCH⁺) and back to the SP form by adding an acid and a base, respectively, was developed. The insulation of the π-conjugated polymer, referred to as insulated spiropyran-containing poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (ins-SP-PPE), using permethylated α-cyclodextrins (PM α-CD) suppressed the π-π interaction between the polymer chains containing MCH⁺, and the installation of PM α-CD improved the switching ability of SPs. The polymer exhibited repeatable acidochromism with almost complete conversion between the SP and MCH⁺ forms. Photoluminescence measurements were conducted and the acid-induced luminescence quenching of the polymer in the solution was observed, which stemmed from energy transfer from the PPE to MCH⁺ moieties. In the solid state, the quantum yield of ins-SP-PPE was more than twice that of the uninsulated polymer, which derived from the insulation effects. The acid-induced luminescence quenching was also observed in the solid state.
