Project description:Hybrid systems have attracted significant attention within the scientific community due to their multifunctionality, which has resulted in increasing demands for wearable electronics, green energy, and miniaturization. Furthermore, MXenes are promising two-dimensional materials that have been applied in various areas due to their unique properties. Herein, a flexible, transparent, and conductive electrode (FTCE) based on a multilayer hybrid MXene/Ag/MXene structure that can be applied to realize an inverted organic solar cell (OSC) with memory and learning functionalities is reported. This optimized FTCE exhibits high transmittance (84%), low sheet resistance (9.7 Ω sq-1 ), and reliable operation (even after 2000 bending cycles). Moreover, the OSC using this FTCE achieves a power conversion efficiency of 13.86% and sustained photovoltaic performance, even after hundreds of switching cycles. The fabricated memristive OSC (MemOSC) device also exhibits reliable resistive switching behavior at low operating voltages of 0.60 and -0.33 V (similar to biological synapses), an excellent ON/OFF ratio (103 ), stable endurance performance (4 × 103 ), and memory retention properties (104 s). Moreover, the MemOSC device can mimic synaptic functionalities on a biological time scale. Thus, MXene can potentially be used as an electrode for highly efficient OSCs with memristive functions for future intelligent solar cell modules.

Project description:This study presents first evidence that reliable EEG data can be recorded with a new cEEGrid electrode array, which consists of ten electrodes printed on flexible sheet and arranged in a c-shape to fit around the ear. Ten participants wore two cEEGrid systems for at least seven hours. Using a smartphone for stimulus delivery and signal acquisition, resting EEG and auditory oddball data were collected in the morning and in the afternoon six to seven hours apart. Analysis of resting EEG data confirmed well-known spectral differences between eyes open and eyes closed conditions. The ERP results confirmed the predicted condition effects with significantly larger P300 amplitudes for target compared to standard tones, and a high test-retest reliability of the P300 amplitude (r > = .74). Moreover, a linear classifier trained on data from the morning session revealed similar performance in classification accuracy for the morning and the afternoon sessions (both > 70%). These findings demonstrate the feasibility of concealed and comfortable brain activity acquisition over many hours.

Project description:Head and neck cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages, and surgical resection with wide margins is generally indicated, despite this treatment being associated with poor postoperative quality of life (QOL). We have previously reported on the therapeutic effects of skeletal muscle-derived multipotent stem cells (Sk-MSCs), which exert reconstitution capacity for muscle-nerve-blood vessel units. Recently, we further developed a 3D patch-transplantation system using Sk-MSC sheet-pellets. The aim of this study is the application of the 3D Sk-MSC transplantation system to the reconstitution of facial complex nerve-vascular networks after severe damage. Mouse experiments were performed for histological analysis and rats were used for functional examinations. The Sk-MSC sheet-pellets were prepared from GFP-Tg mice and SD rats, and were transplanted into the facial resection model (ST). Culture medium was transplanted as a control (NT). In the mouse experiment, facial-nerve-palsy (FNP) scoring was performed weekly during the recovery period, and immunohistochemistry was used for the evaluation of histological recovery after 8 weeks. In rats, contractility of facial muscles was measured via electrical stimulation of facial nerves root, as the marker of total functional recovery at 8 weeks after transplantation. The ST-group showed significantly higher FNP (about three fold) scores when compared to the NT-group after 2-8 weeks. Similarly, significant functional recovery of whisker movement muscles was confirmed in the ST-group at 8 weeks after transplantation. In addition, engrafted GFP+ cells formed complex branches of nerve-vascular networks, with differentiation into Schwann cells and perineurial/endoneurial cells, as well as vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Thus, Sk-MSC sheet-pellet transplantation is potentially useful for functional reconstitution therapy of large defects in facial nerve-vascular networks.

Project description:ObjectiveTo develop a noninvasive technique to quantitatively assess the pulsatile deformation due to cardiac contractions of the optic nerve head (ONH).DesignEvaluation of a diagnostic test or technology.ParticipantsHealthy subjects with no history of refractive surgery, divided into 2 cohorts on the basis of their axial length (AL).MethodsWe present a noninvasive technique to quantitatively assess the pulsatile deformation of the ONH tissue by combining high-frequency OCT imaging and widely available image processing algorithms. We performed a thorough validation of the approach, numerically and experimentally, evaluating the sensitivity of the method to artificially induced deformation and its robustness to different noise levels. We performed deformation measurements in cohorts of healthy (n = 9) and myopic (n = 5) subjects in different physiological strain conditions by calculating the amplitude of tissue displacement in both the primary position and abduction. The head rotation was measured using a goniometer. During imaging in abduction, the head was rotated 40° ± 3°, and subjects were instructed to direct their gaze toward the OCT visual target.Main outcome measuresPulsatile tissue displacement maps.ResultsThe robustness of the method was assessed using artificial deformations and increasing noise levels. The results show acceptable absolute errors before the noise simulations grossly exaggerate image degradation. For the group of subjects with AL of < 25 mm (n = 9), the median pulsatile displacement of the ONH was 7.8 ± 1.3 μm in the primary position and 8.9 ± 1.2 μm in abduction. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference (P ≤ 0.005) between the 2 paired measures. Reproducibility was tested in 2 different sessions in 5 different subjects with the same intraocular pressure, and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.99 was obtained (P < 0.005).ConclusionsThe computational pipeline demonstrated good reproducibility and had the capacity to accurately map the pulsatile deformation of the optic nerve. In a clinical setting, we detected physiological changes in normal subjects supporting its translation potential as a novel biomarker for the diagnosis and progression of optic nerve diseases.

Project description:BackgroundPeripheral nerve stimulation with implanted nerve cuff electrodes can restore standing, stepping and other functions to individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). We performed the first study to evaluate the clinical electrodiagnostic changes due to electrode implantation acutely, chronic presence on the nerve peri- and post-operatively, and long-term delivery of electrical stimulation.MethodsA man with bilateral lower extremity paralysis secondary to cervical SCI sustained 5 years prior to enrollment received an implanted standing neuroprosthesis including composite flat interface nerve electrodes (C-FINEs) electrodes implanted around the proximal femoral nerves near the inguinal ligaments. Electromyography quantified neurophysiology preoperatively, intraoperatively, and through 1 year postoperatively. Stimulation charge thresholds, evoked knee extension moments, and weight distribution during standing quantified neuroprosthesis function over the same interval.ResultsFemoral compound motor unit action potentials increased 31% in amplitude and 34% in area while evoked knee extension moments increased significantly (p < 0.01) by 79% over 1 year of rehabilitation with standing and quadriceps exercises. Charge thresholds were low and stable, averaging 19.7 nC ± 6.2 (SEM). Changes in saphenous nerve action potentials and needle electromyography suggested minor nerve irritation perioperatively.ConclusionsThis is the first human trial reporting acute and chronic neurophysiologic changes due to application of and stimulation through nerve cuff electrodes. Electrodiagnostics indicated preserved nerve health with strengthened responses following stimulated exercise. Temporary electrodiagnostic changes suggest minor nerve irritation only intra- and peri-operatively, not continuing chronically nor impacting function. These outcomes follow implantation of a neuroprosthesis enabling standing and demonstrate the ability to safely implant electrodes on the proximal femoral nerve close to the inguinal ligament. We demonstrate the electrodiagnostic findings that can be expected from implanting nerve cuff electrodes and their time-course for resolution, potentially applicable to prostheses modulating other peripheral nerves and functions.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT01923662 , retrospectively registered August 15, 2013.

Project description:Peripheral neuromodulation has been widely used throughout clinical practices and basic neuroscience research. However, the mechanical and geometrical mismatches at current electrode-nerve interfaces and complicated surgical implantation often induce irreversible neural damage, such as axonal degradation. Here, compatible with traditional 2D planar processing, we propose a 3D twining electrode by integrating stretchable mesh serpentine wires onto a flexible shape memory substrate, which has permanent shape reconfigurability (from 2D to 3D), distinct elastic modulus controllability (from ~100 MPa to ~300 kPa), and shape memory recoverability at body temperature. Similar to the climbing process of twining plants, the temporarily flattened 2D stiff twining electrode can naturally self-climb onto nerves driven by 37°C normal saline and form 3D flexible neural interfaces with minimal constraint on the deforming nerves. In vivo animal experiments, including right vagus nerve stimulation for reducing the heart rate and action potential recording of the sciatic nerve, demonstrate the potential clinical utility.

Project description:The transmittance, conductivity, and flexibility are the crucial properties for the development of next-generation flexible electrodes. Achieving a good trade-off between transmittance and conductivity of flexible electrodes has been a challenge because the two properties are inversely proportional. Herein, we reveal a good trade-off between transmittance and conductivity of gold nanomesh (AuNM) can be achieved through appropriately increasing the AuNM thickness no more than 40 nm, the mean free path of electrons in Au metal. The further flexibility investigation indicates that the AuNM electrodes with mesh structure show higher tolerance than the Au bulk film, and the AuNM electrodes with smaller inter-aperture wire width can accommodate more tensile strains than a counterpart with bigger inter-aperture wire width. The simulated results based on finite element analysis (FEA) show good agreement with experimental results, which indicates the fabrication method of versatile nanosphere lithography (NSL) is reliable. These results established a promising approach toward next-generation large-scale flexible transparent AuNM electrodes for flexible electronics.

Project description:Copper electrodes with a micromesh/nanomesh structure were fabricated on a polyimide substrate using UV lithography and wet etching to produce flexible transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs). Well-defined mesh electrodes were realized through the use of high-quality Cu thin films. The films were fabricated using radio-frequency (RF) sputtering with a single-crystal Cu target--a simple but innovative approach that overcame the low oxidation resistance of ordinary Cu. Hybrid Cu mesh electrodes were fabricated by adding a capping layer of either ZnO or Al-doped ZnO. The sheet resistance and the transmittance of the electrode with an Al-doped ZnO capping layer were 6.197 ohm/sq and 90.657%, respectively, and the figure of merit was 60.502 × 10(-3)/ohm, which remained relatively unchanged after thermal annealing at 200 °C and 1,000 cycles of bending. This fabrication technique enables the mass production of large-area flexible TCEs, and the stability and high performance of Cu mesh hybrid electrodes in harsh environments suggests they have strong potential for application in smart displays and solar cells.

Project description:Self-healing and flexibility are significant for many emerging applications of secondary batteries, which have attracted broad attention. Herein, a self-healing flexible quasi-solid Zn-ion battery composing of flexible all-in-one cathode (VS2 nanosheets growing on carbon cloth) and anode (electrochemically deposited Zn nanowires), and a self-healing hydrogel electrolyte, is presented. The free-standing all-in-one electrodes enable a high capacity and robust structure during flexible transformation of the battery, and the hydrogel electrolyte possesses a good self-healing performance. The presented battery remains as a high retention potential even after healing from being cut into six pieces. When bending at 60°, 90°, and 180°, the battery capacities remain 124, 125, and 114 mAh g-1, respectively, cycling at a current density of 50 mA g-1. Moreover, after cutting and healing twice, the battery still delivers a stable capacity, indicating a potential use of self-healing and wearable electronics.

Project description:AimsWe sought to determine whether somatic lumbar nerve transfer to the pelvic nerve's anterior vesical branch after sacral decentralization for detrusor muscle reinnervation also leads to aberrant innervation of the bladder outlet.MethodsTwenty-six female mongrel hound dogs underwent transection of sacral dorsal and ventral spinal roots (ie, sacral decentralization). Immediately afterward, 12 received genitofemoral nerve transfer and 9 received femoral nerve branch transfer. Five were left sacrally decentralized. Controls included 3 sham-operated and 6 unoperated. Eight months postsurgery, the bladder and urethra were injected with retrograde tracing dyes cystoscopically. After 3 weeks, detrusor and urethral pressures were assayed electrophysiologically immediately before euthanasia and characterization of neural reinnervation.ResultsElectrical stimulation of spinal cords or roots did not lead to increased urethral sphincter pressure in nerve transfer animals, compared with decentralized animals, confirming a lack of functional reinnervation of the bladder outlet. In contrast, mean detrusor pressure increased after lumbar cord/root stimulation. In sham/unoperated animals, urethral and bladder dye injections resulted in labeled neurons in sacral level neural structures (dorsal root ganglia [DRG], sympathetic trunk ganglia [STG], and spinal cord ventral horns); labeling absent in decentralized animals. Urethral dye injections did not result in labeling in lumbar or sacral level neural structures in either nerve transfer group while bladder dye injections lead to increased labeled neurons in lumbar level DRG, STG, and ventral horns, compared to sacrally decentralized animals.ConclusionPelvic nerve transfer for bladder reinnervation does not impact urethral sphincter innervation.
