Dataset for corporate valuation and analyses of peer effects in corporate practices and local factors favoring innovation.

ABSTRACT: This data article provides cross-sectionals on the local values of the coefficients of ROE, R&D-TO-SALES, and TOTAL ASSET as regressors of the MARKET-TO-BOOK ratio and is related to the research article entitled "Do Local Causations Matter? The Effect of Firm Location on the Relations of ROE, R&D, and Firm Size with Market-to-Book" (A. Carosi, 2016) [1]. The data are aggregated at the regional level (NUTS2). The reported data are the regional average values of the coefficients of ROE, R&D-TO-SALES, and LN(TOTAL ASSET) on LN(MARKET-TO-BOOK), estimated upon the Italian non-financial listed firms in 1999-2007. Local coefficient estimates for family firms and utilities are also provided.

Corporate governance practices, barriers and drivers: A survey dataset.

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper is used to examine the corporate governance (CG) practices and compute the CG index among Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) listed firms. Dataset is useful in exploring the different barriers to and drivers of good CG practices. The survey questionnaire was distributed to 350 respondents from 350 PSX listed firms, nevertheless, 120 respondents returned the questionnaire. After reviewing the filled questionnaires, fifteen questionnaires were found to be incomplete. Therefore, the final sample consisted of 105 respondents from 105 PSX listed firms. The survey dataset was analysed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and hierarchical multiple linear regression. SPSS 24 was used to analyse the data. For further findings and interpretation, please refer to the research article entitled "Corporate Governance in Extreme Institutional Environment: Evidence From Emerging Economy" [1]. We also suggest referring to another article that was used to develop the survey questionnaire [2].

Crowding in or crowding out? How local government debt influences corporate innovation for China.

Project description:The pressure upon local governments to redeem their debt could affect government fiscal ability. It could consequently affect their fiscal policies on corporations, which might distort corporate innovation. Based on the data of Chinese Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies and the local government implicit short-term debt financed by local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) in 31 provinces, this paper shows that local government debt (LGD) negatively affects corporate R&D investment in China, thereby suggesting a strong crowding-out effect. The crowding-out effect is more pronounced when the firm is a non-state-owned enterprise (NSOE), the firm's size is small, the firm's age is young, or the firm is in the lower market competition. This paper provide evidence by interacting the terms that local government actions, such as consumption of fiscal resources, strengthening tax collection efforts, or consumption of credit resources, might partially account for the crowding-out effect. This study illustrates the innovation costs of local government debt.

Regional Peer Effects of Corporate Tax Avoidance.

Project description:This study empirically demonstrates significant regional peer effects due to tax avoidance. We used peer companies' idiosyncratic stock returns as an instrumental variable to address potential endogeneity problems. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that for companies with a stronger intensity of regional tax collection and management, a higher degree of informatization, and companies with a low management shareholding ratio, the regional peer effects of enterprise tax avoidance are more significant. Finally, we determined that the managers' information learning, reputation consideration, and information communication are key mechanisms propagating peer effects. The conclusions of this paper enrich and expand the peer effect theory of corporate tax avoidance, thereby providing a theoretical basis and empirical evidence for tax authorities in supervising corporate tax avoidance.

Does real estate bubble affect corporate innovation? Evidence from China.

Project description:With the rapid increase of downward pressure on China's economy, the stability of the property market, as an important part of the economic transformation process, also has a far-reaching impact on enterprises' R&D investment. We select the data of Chinese large and medium-sized industrial enterprises from 1998 to 2015 as our research sample and propose a new combination measurement model based on closeness degree to measure the real estate bubble level in China accurately. The structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) theory is utilized to empirically test the dynamic relationship between the real estate bubble, corporate liquidity, and R&D investment. The results indicate that the real estate bubble level in China is increasing, and a certain risk of deviating from the safety interval in the future exists; The rapid expansion of the real estate bubble has a continuing negative impact on corporate R&D investment, that is, its "credit mitigation effect" is much smaller than the "capital relocation effect," and industrial enterprises will fall into the so-called "low-tech lock-in" state. In other words, to a certain extent, the development of this kind of real estate bubble will not be conducive to the transformation and upgradation of enterprises and long-term economic growth.

Comprehensive dataset for corporate governance in Oman: Data for a three-level quality assessment of corporate governance.

Project description:This article describes a dataset on firm-level corporate governance (CG) mechanisms in the Sultanate of Oman. It incorporates, in cross-sectional time series (pooled panel) data, eleven variables: corporate governance quality, board of directors' quality, audit committee quality, board independence, board expertise, board size, board meetings, audit committee independence, audit committee expertise, audit committee size, and audit committee meetings. The dataset is derived from 1540 firm-year observations for the period 2005 to 2017, excluding financial firms (482) and firms with missing data (29), resulting in a final sample of 1029 firm-year observations. The data were extracted from six sources: OSIRIS database, CG reports, Google, firm's website, directors' websites, and Bloomberg. Scholarly researchers can readily use this dataset as two data types were created to allow individual and composite measurements of corporate governance mechanisms. The individual determinants are: board independence, board expertise, board size, board meetings, audit committee independence, audit committee expertise, audit committee size, and audit committee meetings. The composite measurements are: corporate governance quality, board of directors' quality, and audit committee quality. This dataset could be used for investigating corporate governance mechanisms in different business and market issues.

Employee resourcing strategies and universities' corporate image: A survey dataset.

Project description:The data examined the effect of employee resourcing strategies on corporate image. The data were generated from a total of 500 copies of questionnaire administered to the academic staff of the six (6) selected private Universities in Southwest, Nigeria, out of which four hundred and forty-three (443) were retrieved. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the respondents for this study. Descriptive and Linear Regression, were used for the presentation of the data. Mean score was used as statistical tool of analysis. Therefore, the data presented in this article is made available to facilitate further and more comprehensive investigation on the subject matter.

Local pattern classification differentiates processes of economic valuation.

Project description:For effective decision making, individuals must be able to form subjective values from many types of information. Yet, the neural mechanisms that underlie potential differences in value computation across different decision scenarios are incompletely understood. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), in conjunction with the machine learning technique of support vector machines (SVM), to identify brain regions that contain unique local information associated with different types of valuation. We used a combinatoric approach that evaluated the unique contributions of different brain regions to model generalization strength. Local voxel patterns in left posterior parietal cortex contained unique information differentiating probabilistic and intertemporal valuation, a result that was not accessible using standard fMRI analyses. We conclude that the early valuation phases for these reward types differ on a fine spatial scale, suggesting the existence of computational topographies along the value construction pathway.

Neural valuation of antidrinking campaigns and risky peer influence in daily life.

Project description:ObjectiveHealth behavior is affected by competing sources of influence like media messages and peers. In the context of alcohol consumption, college students are targeted by antidrinking media messages, but tend to have proalcohol conversations with peers. How do humans integrate competing sources of influence on daily behavior? We observed individuals under exposure to antialcohol media messages and proalcohol conversations and tested a "common neural value" account of how contradictory influences are integrated to affect behavior.MethodsParticipants were instructed to cognitively regulate responses to antidrinking media messages while undergoing fMRI at baseline. Individual differences in success in message-consistent or -derogating regulation were indexed by changes in activity within the neural valuation system (ventral striatum/VS, ventromedial prefrontal cortex/VMPFC), providing a proxy for success in finding value in message-consistent/-derogating engagement. To measure peer influence, we tracked daily drinking-related conversations and drinking behavior for 30 days using mobile electronic diaries.ResultsPeer conversations, on average, were positive toward drinking. More positive conversations led to more future drinking, particularly for participants who showed greater neural value signals when derogating antidrinking media. Susceptibility to risky peer influence decreased with increasing success in up-regulating message-consistent neural valuation responses to antidrinking media. Neural effects were driven by VS-activity.ConclusionsResults are consistent with a dynamic value integration process where contradictory influences inform a common neural value signal. Reductions in the value of a behavior (through antidrinking campaigns) may buffer against future value increases after exposure to competing influences (proalcohol peers) with important real-world consequences. Dataset on ethical leadership and corporate reputation - Nigerian deposit money banks׳ perspective.

Project description:Banking institutions play a critical role in any economy, and their stability is crucial to the economic development of a nation. The wave of corporate scandals that rocked the industry left the public with a loss of confidence. Efforts have since been channeled by banks towards developing their corporate governance mechanisms, except that the aspect of ethical leadership and how it translates to a bank׳s corporate reputation has not received sufficient attention. The dataset presented the perception of employees in selected deposit money banks in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to elicit data from the employees. Inferential statistics such as correlation, and regression analysis were adopted. The data collected focused on the impact of ethical leadership on corporate reputation. It also provided information on the significant factors affecting ethical leadership as well as the measures of corporate reputation. The survey data when analysed can be a pointer in determining the unique ethical leadership predictors that could enhance a bank׳s reputation.

FinTech and macroeconomics: Dataset from the US peer-to-peer lending platform.

Project description:We aggregate the United States (US) state-level data with LendingClub's loan book covering the period from 2008 to 2019. LendingClub is a FinTech lending company that provides loans through a technology-driven platform. It was one of the pioneering and leading US peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms. Our dataset consists of over two million observations (N=2,703,430) with diverse loan, borrowers and state-specific features. We provide the description of variables, descriptive statistics, and STATA code with the full dataset. The US possesses significant cross-state variation in terms of economic and demographic characteristics while having risk-sharing policies at the federal level to protect states' creditworthiness. This unique feature of our combined database creates an ideal opportunity to explore the P2P lending market within the context of macroeconomic variables. As the dataset covers a 12-year period for all US states, it enables further cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the FinTech lending market.
