Project description:BackgroundMargin Reflex Distance 1(MRD 1) only describes the central height of upper eyelid and relies on the examiner's experience and disregards eyelid contour abnormalities. Therefore MRD 1 may not be sufficient for an acceptable result to evaluate the outcomes of ptosis surgery. The primary purpose of this study was to assess outcomes of unilateral ptosis correction based on parameters including degree of symmetry, MRD 1, peak height of the upper lid, temporal and nasal ocular surface area, and temporal/nasal area ratio with an objective, quantitative, and repeatable method.MethodsThis study was designed as a retrospective non-randomized case-control study. Medical records of the patients with unilateral ptosis between October 2015 and December 2020 were reviewed. Patients with unilateral ptosis who underwent surgical correction and levator function of 5 mm or greater were included in the study. Two groups were defined; ptotic eye was case group and contralateral eye was control group. Data analysis was performed Image J and Matlab softwares.ResultsThirty-four patients were included in the study. Mean age of patients was 58.8 ± 12.7 years (range 15-75 years). Mean follow-up time was 19.5 ± 7.3 months (range 8-40 months). Four patients were diagnosed with congenital ptosis and 30 patients aponeurotic ptosis. Mean preoperative degree of symmetry for overall eyelid contour was 36.6 ± 27.5% (range 1-92%). Mean postoperative degree of symmetry for overall eyelid contour was 72.4 ± 16.5% (range 55-92%). Temporal/Nasal (T/N) area ratios for contralateral normal eye was 1.19 pre-postoperative, and it was 1.11 preoperatively, 1.15 postoperatively for operated ptotic eye.ConclusionsThis study primarily demonstrated a quantitative, objective, and repeatable method to investigate the degree of symmetry after eyelid surgeries. Secondly, this study suggested that T/N ratio may not be a reliable parameter to evaluate the eyelid symmetry.

Project description:BackgroundInvolutional entropion and upper eyelid ptosis are common eyelid diseases in the elderly population. They represent a frequent cause of discomfort and often result in significant visual and functional impairment. The surgical management of these disorders includes various treatment options and techniques and is usually carried out in multiple time sessions.Case reportWe report the case of a 72 year old female patient, suffering from right eye involutional lower eyelid entropion and ptosis, who was treated synchronously for both conditions, by applying the lateral tarsal strip procedure and the levator resection technique.ConclusionThe synchronous treatment of involutional entropion and ptosis is an alternative treatment strategy, which could potentially improve surgical outcome, while reducing postoperative recovery time and treatment costs.

Any change in the periocular unit leads to facial imbalance and functional disharmony, leading both the young and the elderly to seek consultation, thus making blepharoplasty the surgical procedure of choice for both cosmetic and functional amelioration. The applied anatomy, indications of upper eyelid blepharoplasty, preoperative workup, surgical procedure, postoperative care, and complications would be discussed in detail in this review article.

Project description:The present study aims to use enhanced ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC) as an artificial muscle (a soft-active actuator) to restore eyelid movement of patients with ptosis. The previous eyelid movement mechanisms contained drawbacks, specifically in the lower eyelid. We used finite element analysis (FEA) to find the optimal mechanism among two different models (A and B). In addition to common electrodes of IPMC (gold and platinum), the bovine serum albumin (BSA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) polymers, with optimal weight percentages of carbon nanotube (CNT) nanofiller, were also utilized as non-metallic electrodes to improve the efficiency of the IPMC actuator. In both models, IPMC with nanocomposite electrodes had higher efficiency as compared to the metallic electrodes. In model A, which moved eyelids indirectly, IPMC with MCC-CNT electrode generated a higher force (25.4%) and less stress (5.9 times) as compared to IPMC with BSA-CNT electrode. However, the use of model A (even with IPMCs) with nanocomposite electrodes can have limitations such as possible malposition issues in the eyelids (especially lower). IPMC with MCC-CNT nanocomposite electrode under model B, which moved eyelids directly, was the most efficient option to restore eyelid movement. It led to higher displacements and lower mechanical stress damage as compared to the BSA-CNT. This finding may provide surgeons with valuable data to open a window in the treatment of patients with ptosis.

Project description:Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) typically presents in the epiphysis of long bones and occurs in the skull in less than 1% of cases. When GCTB is diagnosed in the skull, it is primarily seen in the temporal and sphenoid bones. GCTB is an osteoclastic stromal tumor that is locally aggressive and tends to recur. We present a case of a 43-year-old woman with slowly progressive, left-sided proptosis, eyelid swelling, photophobia, epiphora, and pressure sensation. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enhancing tumor in the left inferior orbit with infiltration into the maxillary sinus roof. Histological examination was conclusive for a giant cell tumor of the maxillary bone presenting as an inferior orbital mass. Gross total surgical resection was performed via an inferior anterior orbitotomy, and the patient had resolution of symptoms without recurrence in her postoperative course to date. This report contributes to the scarce literature available on this type of tumor of skull bones, specifically presenting the first case in the maxillary bone of the floor of the orbit.

Project description:Bismuth (Bi) has the strongest spin-orbit coupling among non-radioactive elements and is thus a promising material for efficient charge-to-spin conversion. However, previous electrical detections have reported controversial results for the conversion efficiency. In this study, an optical detection of a spin-orbit torque is reported in a Bi/CoFeB bilayer with a polycrystalline texture of (012) and (003). Taking advantage of the optical detection, spin-orbit torque is accurately separated from the Oersted field and achieves a giant damping-like torque efficiency of +0.5, verifying efficient charge-to-spin conversion. This study also demonstrates a field-like torque efficiency of -0.1. For the mechanism of the charge-to-spin conversion, the bulk spin Hall effect and the interface Rashba-Edelstein effect are considered.

Project description:PurposeThe aim of this article is to investigate the efficacy of small incision blepharoplasty in the treatment of upper eyelid single nasal pad fat bulge.Materials and methodsThis is a prospective study of 43 eyes of 24 patients who underwent small incision upper blepharoplasty for the treatment of solitary nasal pad fat bulge. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, periorbital evaluation, and patient satisfaction evaluation using Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and Blepharoplasty Outcomes Evaluation (BOE) at baseline, 1 week, 3 months, and 6 months after the surgery. All patients underwent small incision upper eyelid blepharoplasty for excision of nasal fat pad bulge.ResultsBaseline nasal fat bulge was graded into grades 1, 2, and 3 in 4 (9.3%), 12 (27.9%), and 27 (62.8%) eyes, respectively. While at 6-month follow-up, grade 0 was recorded in 38 (88.4%) eyes, and grade 1 was recorded in 5 (11.6%) eyes. The mean operative time was 11.7 ± 1.9 min. GAIS showed degrees 1, 2, and 3 in 2 (8.3%), 19 (79.2%), and 3 (12.5%) patients at 6-month follow-up, respectively. Twenty-two patients (91.7%) reported a BOE scale of more than 95%, whereas two patients (8.3%) reported a scale of 80-90% at 6-month follow-up.ConclusionOur cohort highlights the beneficial effects of small incision upper blepharoplasty in the treatment of upper eyelid solitary or lone nasal pad fat bulge, providing a safe, short-timing, and effective option.

Project description:BackgroundTo report "Lamellar Rotation Surgery",a new technique for repairing large and moderate full-thickness upper eyelid defects.MethodsA two-stage technique is described in which a vertical incision is made in the tarsus of the lower eyelid with elevation of the lateral posterior lamella while sparing the lower eyelid orbicularis and skin to be rotated superiorly to form the reconstructed posterior lamella of the upper eyelid. Additionally, a lateral periosteal flap is used to reconstruct the lateral canthal tendon, and a McGregor procedure is used to reconstruct the anterior lamella of the upper eyelid. The flap is divided during a second-stage surgery at 3 months. Three cases are described to showcase this technique.ResultsGood functional and aesthetic results were achieved for the eyelids.ConclusionsThis new procedure may help to address the challenge of repairing full-thickness defects of the upper eyelid.Trial registrationRegistration number: ChiCTR1800018990 , 20 Oct 2018, retrospectively registered.
