Project description:Inorganic/organic hybrid solar cells have attracted a lot of interest due to their potential in combining the advantages of both components. To understand the key issues in association with photoinduced charge separation/transportation processes and to improve overall power conversion efficiency, various combinations with nanostructures of hybrid systems have been investigated. Here, we briefly review the structures of hybrid nanocomposites studied so far, and attempt to associate the power conversion efficiency with these nanostructures. Subsequently, we are then able to summarize the factors for optimizing the performance of inorganic/organic hybrid solar cells.

Project description:Thermoelectric materials, capable of interconverting heat and electricity, are attractive for applications in thermal energy harvesting as a means to power wireless sensors, wearable devices, and portable electronics. However, traditional inorganic thermoelectric materials pose significant challenges due to high cost, toxicity, scarcity, and brittleness, particularly when it comes to applications requiring flexibility. Here, we investigate organic-inorganic nanocomposites that have been developed from bespoke inks which are printed via an aerosol jet printing method onto flexible substrates. For this purpose, a novel in situ aerosol mixing method has been developed to ensure uniform distribution of Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 nanocrystals, fabricated by a scalable solvothermal synthesis method, within a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate matrix. The thermoelectric properties of the resulting printed nanocomposite structures have been evaluated as a function of composition, and the power factor was found to be maximum (?30 ?W/mK2) for a nominal loading fraction of 85 wt % Sb2Te3 nanoflakes. Importantly, the printed nanocomposites were found to be stable and robust upon repeated flexing to curvatures up to 300 m-1, making these hybrid materials particularly suitable for flexible thermoelectric applications.

Project description:In organic-inorganic nanocomposites, interfacial regions are primarily influenced by the dispersion uniformity of nanoparticles and the strength of interfacial bonds between the nanoparticles and the polymer matrix. The insulating performance of organic-inorganic dielectric nanocomposites is highly influenced by the characteristics of interfacial regions. In this study, we prepare polyethylene oxide (PEO)-like functional layers on silica nanoparticles through plasma polymerization. Epoxy resin/silica nanocomposites are subsequently synthesized with these plasma-polymerized nanoparticles. It is found that plasma at a low power (i.e., 10 W) can significantly increase the concentration of C-O bonds on the surface of silica nanoparticles. This plasma polymerized thin layer can not only improve the dispersion uniformity by increasing the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticles, but also provide anchoring sites to enable the formation of covalent bonds between the organic and inorganic phases. Furthermore, electrical tests reveal improved electrical treeing resistance and decreased dielectric constant of the synthesized nanocomposites, while the dielectric loss of the nanocomposites remains unchanged as compared to the pure epoxy resin.

Project description:Mechanical abrasion is an extremely simple, rapid, and low-cost method for deposition of carbon-based materials onto a substrate. However, the method is limited in throughput, precision, and surface compatibility for drawing conductive pathways. Selective patterning of surfaces using laser-etching can facilitate substantial improvements to address these current limitations for the abrasive deposition of carbon-based materials. This study demonstrates the successful on-demand fabrication of fully-drawn chemical sensors on a wide variety of substrates (e.g., weighing paper, polymethyl methacrylate, silicon, and adhesive tape) using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as sensing materials and graphite as electrodes. Mechanical mixing of SWCNTs with solid or liquid selectors yields sensors that can detect and discriminate parts-per-million (ppm) quantities of various nitrogen-containing vapors (pyridine, aniline, triethylamine).

Project description:Polyaniline (PANI)-materials have recently been proposed for environmental remediation applications thanks to PANI stability and sorption properties. As an alternative to conventional PANI oxidative syntheses, which involve toxic carcinogenic compounds, an eco-friendly procedure was here adopted starting from benign reactants (aniline-dimer and H2O2) and initiated by ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated TiO2. To unlock the full potential of this procedure, we investigated the roles of TiO2 and H2O2 in the nanocomposites synthesis, with the aim of tailoring the properties of the final material to the desired application. The nanocomposites prepared by varying the TiO2:H2O2:aniline-dimer molar ratios were characterized for their thermal, optical, morphological, structural and surface properties. The reaction mechanism was investigated via mass analyses and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The nanocomposites were tested on both methyl orange and hexavalent chromium removal. A fast dye-sorption was achieved also in the presence of interferents and the recovery of the dye was obtained upon eco-friendly conditions. An efficient Cr(VI) abatement was obtained also after consecutive tests and without any regeneration treatment. The fine understanding of the reaction mechanism allowed us to interpret the pollutant-removal performances of the different materials, leading to tailored nanocomposites in terms of maximum sorption and reduction capability upon consecutive tests even in simulated drinking water.

Project description:In this work, we demonstrate the incorporation of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials into a metal-organic framework (MOF) derived from one-dimensional (1D) cerium oxide (CeO2) for the electrochemical detection of dopamine. Ce-MOF was employed as a sacrificial template for preparing CeO2 with 2D materials by the pyrolysis process. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature was studied to achieve a better crystal structure of CeO2. Siloxene improved the dopamine sensing performance of CeO2 compared with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) due to the basal plane surface oxygen and hydroxyl groups of 2D siloxene. Under optimal conditions, the fabricated CeO2/siloxene electrode exhibited a detection limit of 0.292 μM, with a linear range from 0.292 μM to 7.8 μM. This work provides a novel scheme for designing the CeO2 material with siloxene for excellent dopamine sensors, which could be extended towards other biosensing applications.

Project description:The development of low-cost, reliable sensors will rely on devices capable of converting an analyte binding event to an easily read electrical signal. Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are ideal for inexpensive, single-use chemical or biological sensors because of their compatibility with flexible, large-area substrates, simple processing, and highly tunable active layer materials. We have fabricated low-operating voltage OTFTs with a cross-linked polymer gate dielectric, which display stable operation under aqueous conditions over >10(4) electrical cycles using the p-channel semiconductor 5,5'-bis-(7-dodecyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bithiophene (DDFTTF). OTFT sensors were demonstrated in aqueous solutions with concentrations as low as parts per billion for trinitrobenzene, methylphosphonic acid, cysteine, and glucose. This work demonstrates of reliable OTFT operation in aqueous media, hence opening new possibilities of chemical and biological sensing with OTFTs.

Project description:Protein aggregation leads to the transformation of proteins from their soluble form to the insoluble amyloid fibrils and these aggregates get deposited in the specific body tissues, accounting for various diseases. To prevent such an aggregation, organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposites of iron oxide nanoparticle (NP, ?6.5-7.0 nm)-conjugated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) isolated from Syzygium cumini (SC) and Pinus roxburghii (PR) were chemically synthesized. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the nanocomposites suggested that the in situ-synthesized iron oxide NPs were bound to the CNC surface in a uniform and regular fashion. The ThT fluorescence assay together with 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, Congo Red, and CD studies suggested that short fiber-based SC nanocomposites showed better inhibition as well as dissociation of human serum albumin aggregates. The TEM and fluorescence microscopy studies supported similar observations. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis results documented dissociation of higher protein aggregates in the presence of the developed nanocomposite. Interestingly, the dissociated proteins retained their biological function by maintaining a high amount of ?-helix content. The in vitro studies with HEK-293 cells suggested that the developed nanocomposite reduces aggregation-induced cytotoxicity by intracellular reactive oxygen species scavenging and maintaining the Ca2+ ion-channel. These results indicated that the hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposite, with simultaneous sites for hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions, tends to provide a larger surface area for nanocomposite-protein interactions, which ultimately disfavors the nucleation step for fibrillation for protein aggregates.

Project description:Humans are exposed to both inorganic and organic mercury. While the toxicity of mercury is well established, much remains to be resolved about how different mercurials act at the molecular level. To address this issue, we employed a toxicogenomics approach using the nematode C. elegans. Using sub-, low- or high-toxic exposures of either HgCl2 or CH3HgCl the effects of these mercurials on steady-state mRNA levels for the entire genome were determined. A total of 473 and 2,865 genes were differentially expressed in the HgCl2 and CH3HgCl treatments, respectively. Hierarchical clustering, principal components and pattern analyses indicated that the transcriptional responses of the mercurials were unique.

Project description:Mesoporous ZnS-NiS composites are prepared via ion- exchange reactions using ZnS as the precursor. The prepared mesoporous ZnS-NiS composite materials have large surface areas (137.9 m(2) g(-1)) compared with the ZnS precursor. More importantly, the application of these mesoporous ZnS-NiS composites as nonenzymatic glucose sensors was successfully explored. Electrochemical sensors based on mesoporous ZnS-NiS composites exhibit a high selectivity and a low detection limit (0.125 μm) toward the oxidation of glucose, which can mainly be attributed to the morphological characteristics of the mesoporous structure with high specific surface area and a rational composition of the two constituents. In addition, the mesoporous ZnS-NiS composites coated on the surface of electrodes can be used to modify the mass transport regime, and this alteration can, in favorable circumstances, facilitate the amperometric discrimination between species. These results suggest that such mesoporous ZnS-NiS composites are promising materials for nonenzymatic glucose sensors.
