Project description:Graphene free-standing film-like or paper-like materials have attracted great attention due to their intriguing electronic, optical and mechanical properties and potential application in chemical filters, molecular storage and supercapacitors. Although significant progress has been made in fabricating graphene films or paper, there is still no effective method targeting ultrathin free-standing graphene films (UFGFs). Here, we present a modified filtration assembly method to prepare these ultrathin films. With this approach, we have fabricated a series of ultrathin free-standing graphene oxide films and UFGFs, up to 40 mm in diameter, with controllable thickness from micrometre to nanoscale (approx. 40 nm) dimensions. This method can be easily scaled up and the films display excellent optical, electrical and electrochemical properties. The ability to produce UFGFs from graphene oxide with a scalable, low-cost approach should take us a step closer to real-world applications of graphene.

Project description:We report the fabrication, properties, and bacteria-resistance of polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) coatings and free-standing films. Poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid), poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride), and salt were spin-coated into PEC films. After thermal annealing in a humid environment, highly transparent, mechanically strong, and chemically robust films were formed. Notably, we demonstrate that PEC coatings significantly reduce the attachment of Escherichia coli K12 without killing the micro-organisms. We suggest that forming bacteria-resistant surface coatings from commercially available polymers holds the potential for use across a wide range of applications including high-touch surfaces in medical settings.

Project description:Measuring thicknesses in thin films with high spatial and temporal resolution is of prime importance for understanding the structure and dynamics in thin films and membranes. In the present work, we introduce fluorescence-interferometry, a method that combines standard reflected light thin film interferometry with simultaneous fluorescence measurements. We apply this method to the thinning dynamics and phase separation in free-standing inverse phospholipid bilayer films. The measurements were carried out using a standard fluorescence microscope using multichannel imaging and yielded subnanometer resolution, which is applied to optically measure the discrete thickness variations across phase-separated membranes.

Project description:Patterned conducting polymer films with unique structures have promising prospects for application in various fields, such as actuation, water purification, sensing, and bioelectronics. However, their practical application is hindered because of the limitations of existing construction methods. Herein, a strategy is proposed for the superhydrophobic-substrate-assisted construction of free-standing 3D microcavity-patterned conducting polymer films (McPCPFs) at micrometer resolution. Easy-peeling and nondestructive transfer properties are achieved through electrochemical polymerization along the solid/liquid/gas triphase interface on micropillar-structured substrates. The effects of the wettability and geometrical parameters of the substrates on the construction of McPCPFs are systematically investigated in addition to the evolution of the epitaxial growth along the triphase interface at different polymerization times. The McPCPFs can be easily peeled from superhydrophobic surfaces using ethanol because of weak adhesion and nondestructively transferred to various substrates taking advantage of the capillarity. Furthermore, sensitive light-driven McPCPF locomotion on organic liquid surfaces is demonstrated. Ultimately, a facile strategy for the construction of free-standing 3D microstructure-patterned conducting polymer films is proposed, which can improve productivity and applicability of the films in different fields and expand the application scope of superwettable interfaces.

Project description:Solid electrolytes are of high interest for the development of advanced electrochemical energy storage devices with all-solid-state architectures. Here, we report the fabrication of the electrolyte membranes based on LiTFSI (LiN(CF3SO2)2) and PEO-PVDF blends with improved properties. We show that addition of PVDF enables preparation of free-standing films of the compositions within the so called "crystallinity gap" of the LiTFSI-PEO system known to provide high ion conductivity. We show that optimal PVDF content enables preparation of the films with reasonable elastic modulus and high ionic conductivity of about 0.3 mS cm-1 at 60 °C and about 0.1 mS cm-1 at room-temperature. Combining FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and DSC measurements we show that a noticeable fraction of PVDF remains crystalline and enhances the mechanical properties of the material, and at the same time it additionally promotes LiTFSI dissociation and disordering. Density functional theory calculations showed that the Li+-PEO-PVDF complexation energy magnitude is almost as high as that of Li-PEO complexes, thus the salt dissociation ability can be retained in spite of the introduction of the substantial amounts of PVDF required for mechanical stability.

Project description:We report on the development of a method of formation of hydrophilic carbon nanotube (CNT) films. The technique is simple, straightforward and does not require specialized equipment or use of harsh chemical compounds. Elimination of the need for oxidizing agents has paramount implications because it preserves the inherent CNT properties. A reference study, in which the traditional method of oxidation of CNTs was used to introduce functional groups, gave smaller reduction of water contact angle and made a negative influence on the surface chemistry. From the practical point of view, this method is an important step towards implementation of CNTs in the real life by making them more compatible with interface materials. Interestingly, the method gives high level of control over the surface character of CNT films and hydrophilic character can be precisely patterned where required.

Project description:A new straight forward approach to create nanoporous polymer membranes with well defined average pore diameters is presented. The method is based on fast mechanical deformation of highly entangled polymer films at high temperatures and a subsequent quench far below the glass transition temperature Tg . The process is first designed generally by simulation and then verified for the example of polystyrene films. The methodology does not need any chemical processing, supporting substrate, or self assembly process and is solely based on polymer inherent entanglement effects. Pore diameters are of the order of ten polymer reptation tube diameters. The resulting membranes are stable over months at ambient conditions and display remarkable elastic properties.

Project description:Concomitant with the development of polymer nanocomposite (PNC) technologies across numerous industries is an expanding awareness of the uncertainty with which engineered nanoparticles embedded within these materials may be released into the external environment, particularly liquid media. Recently there has been an interest in evaluating potential exposure to nanoscale fillers from PNCs, but existing studies often rely upon uncharacterized, poor quality, or proprietary materials, creating a barrier to making general mechanistic conclusions about release phenomena. In this study we employed semiconductor nanoparticles (quantum dots, QDs) as model nanofillers to quantify potential release into liquid media under specific environmental conditions. QDs of two sizes were incorporated into low-density polyethylene by melt compounding and the mixtures were extruded as free-standing fluorescent films. These films were subjected to tests under conditions intended to accelerate potential release of embedded particles or dissolved residuals into liquid environments. Using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and laser scanning confocal microscopy, it was found that the acidity of the external medium, exposure time, and small differences in particle size (on the order of a few nm) all play pivotal roles in release kinetics. Particle dissolution was found to play a major if not dominant role in the release process. This paper also presents the first evidence that internally embedded nanoparticles contribute to the mass transfer, an observation made possible via the use of a model system that was deliberately designed to probe the complex relationships between nanoparticle-enabled plastics and the environment.

Project description:Research on composite materials is facing, among others, the challenging task of incorporating nanocrystals, and their superstructures, in polymer matrices. Electron microscopy can typically image nanometre-scale structures embedded in thin polymer films, but not in films that are micron size thick. Here, X-ray Ptychography was used to visualize, with a resolution of a few tens of nanometers, how CdSe/CdS octapod-shaped nanocrystals self-assemble in polystyrene films of 24 ± 4 μm, providing a unique means for non-destructive investigation of nanoparticles distribution and organization in thick polymer films.

Project description:Along with high power capability and energy density, long cycle life is regarded an essential performance requirement for energy storage devices. The rapid capacitance decline of conducting polymer-based electrodes remains a major technical challenge and precludes their practical applications in supercapacitors. In this work, a polyaniline (PANI) network is synthesized via interfacial Buchwald-Hartwig polymerization for the first time, facilitating the construction of covalently connected PANI networks by ligand-promoted C-N bond formation. Particularly, the interfacial synthesis and subsequent gas release from pre-anchored protecting groups allow bottom-up and efficient access to porous cross-linked PANI (PCL-PANI) films that are free-standing and solvent-resistant. Upon assembling into supercapacitors, the PCL-PANI material enables an unprecedent long-term charge-discharge cycling performance (>18 000 times) without clear capacitance loss for an additive-free pseudocapacitive system. In addition, this synthesis affords electrodes entirely consisting of conducting polymers, yielding highly reversible gravimetric capacitance at 435 F gelectrode -1 in a two-electrode system, and a high gravimetric energy of 12.5 W h kgelectrode -1 while delivering an outstanding power density of 16 000 W kgelectrode -1, which is 10-fold higher than those of conventional linear PANI composite supercapacitors. This synthetic approach represents a novel and versatile strategy to generate additive/binder-free and high-performance conducting thin-films for energy storage.
