Project description:This paper describes a new silicon allotrope in the P2/m space group found by first-principles calculations using the Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package (CASTEP) plane-wave code. The examined P2/m-Si belongs to the monoclinic crystal system. P2/m-Si is an indirect band-gap semiconductor with a band gap of 1.51 eV, as determined using the HSE06 hybrid functional. The elastic constants, phonon spectra and enthalpy indicate that P2/m-Si is mechanically, dynamically, and thermodynamically stable. P2/m-Si is a low-density (2.19 g/cm³) silicon allotrope. The value of B/G is less than 1.75, which indicates that the new allotrope is brittle. It is shown that the difference in the elastic anisotropy along different orientations is greater than that in other phases. Finally, to understand the thermodynamic properties of P2/m-Si, the thermal expansion coefficient α, the Debye temperature ΘD, and the heat capacities CP and CV are also investigated in detail.

Project description:The structural mechanical properties and electronic properties of a new silicon allotrope Si96 are investigated at ambient pressure by using a first-principles calculation method with the ultrasoft pseudopotential scheme in the framework of generalized gradient approximation. The elastic constants and phonon calculations reveal that Si96 is mechanically and dynamically stable at ambient pressure. The conduction band minimum and valence band maximum of Si96 are at the R and G point, which indicates that Si96 is an indirect band gap semiconductor. The anisotropic calculations show that Si96 exhibits a smaller anisotropy than diamond Si in terms of Young's modulus, the percentage of elastic anisotropy for bulk modulus and shear modulus, and the universal anisotropic index AU. Interestingly, most silicon allotropes exhibit brittle behavior, in contrast to the previously proposed ductile behavior. The void framework, low density, and nanotube structure make Si96 quite attractive for applications such as hydrogen storage and electronic devices that work at extreme conditions, and there are potential applications in Li-battery anode materials.

Project description:A total of 87 new monoclinic silicon allotropes are systematically scanned by a random strategy combined with group and graph theory and high-throughput calculations. The new allotropes include 13 with a direct or quasi-direct band gap and 12 with metallic characteristics, and the rest are indirect band gap semiconductors. More than 30 of these novel monoclinic Si allotropes show bulk moduli greater than or equal to 80 GPa, and three of them show even greater bulk moduli than diamond Si. Only two of the new Si allotropes show a greater shear modulus than diamond Si. The crystal structures, stability (elastic constants, phonon spectra), mechanical properties, electronic properties, effective carrier masses and optical properties of all 87 Si monoclinic allotropes are studied in detail. The electron effective masses ml of five of the new allotropes are smaller than that of diamond Si. All of these novel monoclinic Si allotropes show strong absorption in the visible spectral region. Taken together with their electronic band gap structures, this makes them promising materials for photovoltaic applications. These investigations greatly enrich the current knowledge of the structure and electronic properties of silicon allotropes.

Project description:Silicon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties and potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and other advanced technologies. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of a novel silicon allotrope, Popsilicene (Pop-Si), derived from the structure of Popgraphene. Using density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the thermal stability, mechanical and electronic properties, and optical characteristics of Pop-Si. Our results demonstrate that Pop-Si exhibits good thermal stability at 1000 K. Electronic structure calculations reveal that Pop-Si is metallic, with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Furthermore, our analysis of the optical properties indicates that Pop-Si has pronounced UV-Vis optical activity, making it a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices. Mechanical property assessments show that Pop-Si has Young's modulus ranging from 10 to 92 GPa and a Poisson's ratio of 0.95. These results combined suggest its potential for practical applications.

Project description:A high band gap, two-dimensional (2D) twisted octagonal (TO-)C10 allotrope of carbon is proposed. This dynamically and mechanically stable structure shows thermal stability up to 500 K and shows one of the largest Young's modulus of 306.4 GPa nm (close to graphene) among 2D carbon derivatives. TO-C10 also possesses one of the highest 2.94 eV (3.97 eV by HSE06) indirect band gap among reported 2D allotropes of carbon. Owing to structural anisotropy with respect to the basal plane and strong directional sp3 bonding, the band gap of the structure is tuned with high strain endurance along with variation in the band gap subject to applied direction of strain. The nature of the band gap also changes between indirect and direct on account of variation in the valence band states, dominantly governed by carbon atoms in the less symmetrically bonded ladder sites. Further, the band gap can be tuned with doping of Si and Ge and also by forming one-directional nanoribbons. Owing to structural inhomogeneity and inherent high band gap, the proposed 2D TO-C10 can be a potential candidate for future applications.

Project description:Monolithic integration of novel materials without modifying the existing photonic component library is crucial to advancing heterogeneous silicon photonic integrated circuits. Here we show the introduction of a silicon nitride etch stop layer at select areas, coupled with low-loss oxide trench, enabling incorporation of functional materials without compromising foundry-verified device reliability. As an illustration, two distinct chalcogenide phase change materials (PCMs) with remarkable nonvolatile modulation capabilities, namely Sb2Se3 and Ge2Sb2Se4Te1, were monolithic back-end-of-line integrated, offering compact phase and intensity tuning units with zero-static power consumption. By employing these building blocks, the phase error of a push-pull Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical switch could be reduced with a 48% peak power consumption reduction. Mirco-ring filters with >5-bit wavelength selective intensity modulation and waveguide-based >7-bit intensity-modulation broadband attenuators could also be achieved. This foundry-compatible platform could open up the possibility of integrating other excellent optoelectronic materials into future silicon photonic process design kits.

Project description:The potential application of silicon oxycarbonitride (SiOCN), silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) and silicon oxycarbide-SiC (SiOC-SiC) for photothermal devices such as volumetric solar absorbers has been studied evaluating the response to thermal shock from a Fresnel lens. The accelerated ageing test comprises fast heating (32 °C min-1) and cooling rates (27 °C min-1) from 100 to 1000 °C and dwelling times of 10 min. Porous materials (SiOCNp and SiOCp) failed the thermal shock tests; they were massively degraded by the formation of a large depression in the focus of solar radiation. Dense materials (SiOCd and SiOC-SiCd) withstood 100 cycles of thermal shock ageing tests due to the formation of a protective silica layer. The absorptance values for dense materials remained fairly constant before and after thermal shock tests: from 94.5 to 94.3% for SiOCd and from 93.3 to 93.3% for SiOC-SiCd. These preliminary studies indicate their potential for high-temperature solar receiver applications.

Project description:Due to the low absorption coefficients of crystalline silicon-based solar cells, researchers have focused on non-silicon semiconductors with direct band gaps for the development of novel photovoltaic devices. In this study, we use density functional theory to model the electronic structure of a large database of candidates to identify materials with ideal properties for photovoltaic applications. The first screening is operated at the GGA level to select only materials with a sufficiently small direct band gap. We extracted twenty-seven candidates from an initial population of thousands, exhibiting GGA band gap in the range 0.5⁻1 eV. More accurate calculations using a hybrid functional were performed on this subset. Based on this, we present a detailed first-principle investigation of the four optimal compounds, namely, TlBiS₂, Ba₃BiN, Ag₂BaS₂, and ZrSO. The direct band gap of these materials is between 1.1 and 2.26 eV. In the visible region, the absorption peaks that appear in the optical spectra for these compounds indicate high absorption intensity. Furthermore, we have investigated the structural and mechanical stability of these compounds and calculated electron effective masses. Based on in-depth analysis, we have identified TlBiS₂, Ba₃BiN, Ag₂BaS₂, and ZrSO as very promising candidates for photovoltaic applications.

Project description:Optically controlled nongenetic neuromodulation represents a promising approach for the fundamental study of neural circuits and the clinical treatment of neurological disorders. Among the existing material candidates that can transduce light energy into biologically relevant cues, silicon (Si) is particularly advantageous due to its highly tunable electrical and optical properties, ease of fabrication into multiple forms, ability to absorb a broad spectrum of light, and biocompatibility. This protocol describes a rational design principle for Si-based structures, general procedures for material synthesis and device fabrication, a universal method for evaluating material photoresponses, detailed illustrations of all instrumentation used, and demonstrations of optically controlled nongenetic modulation of cellular calcium dynamics, neuronal excitability, neurotransmitter release from mouse brain slices, and brain activity in the mouse brain in vivo using the aforementioned Si materials. The entire procedure takes ~4-8 d in the hands of an experienced graduate student, depending on the specific biological targets. We anticipate that our approach can also be adapted in the future to study other systems, such as cardiovascular tissues and microbial communities.

Project description:In the solid-state synthesis of impurity-doped CaGa(2)S(4), calcium tetra-thio-digallate(III), a novel phosphor material (denominated as the X-phase), with monoclinic symmetry in the space group P2(1)/a, has been discovered. Its emission intensity is higher than that of the known ortho-rhom-bic polymorph of CaGa(2)S(4) crystallizing in the space group Fddd. The asymmetric unit of the monoclinic phase consists of two Ca, four Ga and eight S sites. Each of the Ca and Ga atoms is surrounded by seven and four sulfide ions, respectively, thereby sharing each of the sulfur sites with the nearest neighbours. In contrast, the corresponding sites in the ortho-rhom-bic phase are surrounded by eight and four S atoms, respectively. The photoluminescence peaks from Mn(2+) and Ce(3+) in the doped X-phase, both of which are supposed to replace Ca(2+) ions, have been observed to shift towards the high energy side in comparison with those in the ortho-rhom-bic phase. This suggests that the crystal field around the Mn(2+) and Ce(3+) ions in the X-phase is weaker than that in the ortho-rhom-bic phase.
