Cyanovinylation of Aldehydes: Organocatalytic Multicomponent Synthesis of Conjugated Cyanomethyl Vinyl Ethers.

Project description:A novel organocatalytic multicomponent cyanovinylation of aldehydes was designed for the synthesis of conjugated cyanomethyl vinyl ethers. The reaction was implemented for the synthesis of a 3-substituted 3-(cyanomethoxy)acrylates, using aldehydes as substrates, acetone cyanohydrin as the cyanide anion source, and methyl propiolate as the source of the vinyl component. The multicomponent reaction is catalyzed by N-methyl morpholine (2.5 mol%) to deliver the 3-(cyanomethoxy)acrylates in excellent yields and with preponderance of the E-isomer. The multicomponent reaction manifold is highly tolerant to the structure and composition of the aldehyde (aliphatic, aromatic, heteroaromatics), and it is instrumentally simple (one batch, open atmospheres), economic (2.5 mol% catalyst, stoichiometric reagents), environmentally friendly (no toxic waste), and sustainable (easy scalability).

Practical Synthesis of C-1 Deuterated Aldehydes Enabled by NHC Catalysis.

Project description:The recent surge in applications of deuterated pharmaceutical agents has created an urgent demand for synthetic methods that efficiently generate deuterated building blocks. Here we show that N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) promote a reversible hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDE) reaction with simple aldehydes, which leads to a practical approach to synthetically valuable C-1 deuterated aldehydes. The reactivity of the well-established NHC catalysed formation of Breslow intermediates from aldehydes is reengineered to overcome the overwhelmingly kinetically favorable, irreversible benzoin condensation reaction and achieve the critical reversibility to drive the formation of desired deuterated products when an excess of D2O is employed. Notably, this operationally simple and cost-effective protocol serves as a general and truly practical approach to all types of 1-D-aldehydes including aryl, -alkyl and -alkenyl aldehydes and enables chemoselective late-stage deuterium incorporation into complex, native therapeutic agents and natural products with uniformly high levels (>95%) of deuterium incorporation for a total of 104 substrates tested.

In this three-component process various commercially available alkyl iodides act as radical precursors and light is used for chain initiation. Subsequent oxidation and protodeborylation leads to valuable ?-chiral ketones and chiral alkanes, respectively, with excellent enantiopurity.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Boron Compounds Using Reaction of Diazonium Tetraphenylborate with Enaminoamides.

Project description:A family of oxazaborines, diazaborinones, triazaborines, and triazaborinones was prepared by reaction of polarized ethylenes, such as β-enaminoamides, with 4-methylbenzenediazonium tetraphenylborates. The reaction conditions (stirring in CH2Cl2 at room temperature (Method A) or stirring with CH3COONa in CH2Cl2 at room temperature (Method B) or refluxing in the CH2Cl2/toluene mixture (Method C)) controlled the formation and relative content of these compounds in the reaction mixtures from one to three products. Substituted oxazaborines gradually rearranged into diazaborinones at 250 °C. The prepared compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, HRMS, or microanalysis. The structure of individual compounds was confirmed by 11B NMR, 15N NMR, 1D NOESY, and X-ray analysis. The mechanism of reaction of enaminoamides with 4-methylbenzenediazonium tetraphenylborate was proposed.

Synthesis of enantioenriched homopropargylic sulfonamides by a three component reaction of aldehydes, sulfonamides, and chiral allenylsilanes.

Project description:Enantioenriched allenylsilanes are used as carbon nucleophiles in three-component reactions with in situ generated N-sulfonylimines to selectively form syn-homopropargylic sulfonamides. The reactions proceed with a variety of aldehyde and sulfonamide reaction partners. These novel reaction products are obtained with useful levels of diastereoselectivity, and the axial chirality of the allenylsilane is fully transferred to point chirality, forming products with >97% ee.

Towards practical applications of quantum emitters in boron nitride.

Project description:We demonstrate quantum emission capabilities from boron nitride structures which are relevant for practical applications and can be seamlessly integrated into a variety of heterostructures and devices. First, the optical properties of polycrystalline BN films grown by metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy are inspected. We observe that these specimens display an antibunching in the second-order correlation functions, if the broadband background luminescence is properly controlled. Furthermore, the feasibility to use flexible and transparent substrates to support hBN crystals that host quantum emitters is explored. We characterise hBN powders deposited onto polydimethylsiloxane films, which display quantum emission characteristics in ambient environmental conditions.

Convenient Synthesis of Functionalized Unsymmetrical Vinyl Disulfides and Their Inverse Electron-Demand Hetero-Diels-Alder Reaction.

Project description:The simple, convenient, and efficient methods for the preparation of unsymmetrical vinyl disulfides with additional functional groups under mild conditions with moderate to high yields were designed. The developed methods include the reaction of S-vinyl phosphorodithioate with thiotosylates or S-vinyl thiotosylate with thiols. The designed methods allow for the synthesis of unsymmetrical vinyl disulfides with additional functionalities such as hydroxy, carboxy, protected amino, or ester groups. Vinyl disulfides reacted with the generated transient o-iminothioquinones in an inverse electron-demand [4+2] cycloaddition to produce benzo[b][1,4]thiazine derivatives.
