Project description:Sulfides are promising candidates for environment-friendly and cost-effective thermoelectric materials. In this article, we review the recent progress in all-length-scale hierarchical architecturing for sulfides and chalcogenides, highlighting the key strategies used to enhance their thermoelectric performance. We primarily focus on TiS₂-based layered sulfides, misfit layered sulfides, homologous chalcogenides, accordion-like layered Sn chalcogenides, and thermoelectric minerals. CS₂ sulfurization is an appropriate method for preparing sulfide thermoelectric materials. At the atomic scale, the intercalation of guest atoms/layers into host crystal layers, crystal-structural evolution enabled by the homologous series, and low-energy atomic vibration effectively scatter phonons, resulting in a reduced lattice thermal conductivity. At the nanoscale, stacking faults further reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. At the microscale, the highly oriented microtexture allows high carrier mobility in the in-plane direction, leading to a high thermoelectric power factor.

Project description:Tin sulfide (SnS) and tin selenide (SnSe) are attractive materials for thermoelectric conversion applications. Favorable small band gap, high carrier mobility, large Seebeck coefficient, and remarkably low lattice thermal conductivity are a consequence of their anisotropic crystal structure of symmetry Pnma , made of corrugated, black phosphorus-like layers. Their internal lattice dynamics combined with chemical bond softening in going from SnS to SnSe make for subtle effects on lattice thermal conductivity. Reliable prediction of phonon transport for these materials must therefore include many-body effects. Using first principles methods and a transferable tight-binding potential for frozen phonon calculations, here, we investigate the evolution of thermal lattice conductivity and thermoelectric figure of merit in Pnma -SnS and -SnSe, also including the high-temperature Cmcm -SnS phase. We show how thermal conductivity lowering in SnS at higher temperatures is largely due to dynamic phonon softening ahead of the Pnma - Cmcm structural phase transition. SnS becomes more similar to SnSe in its lifetime and mean free path profiles as it approaches its high-temperature Cmcm phase. The latter nonetheless intrinsically constraints phonon group velocity modules, preventing SnS to overtake SnSe. Our analysis provides important insights and computational benchmarks for optimization of thermoelectric materials via a more efficient computational strategy compared to previous ab initio attempts, one that can be easily transferred to larger systems for further thermoelectric materials nanoengineering. The good description of anharmonicity at higher temperatures inherent to the tight-binding potential yields calculated lattice conductivity values that are in very good agreement with experiments.

Project description:Thermoelectric technology, which possesses potential application in recycling industrial waste heat as energy, calls for novel high-performance materials. The systematic exploration of novel thermoelectric materials with excellent electronic transport properties is severely hindered by limited insight into the underlying bonding orbitals of atomic structures. Here we propose a simple yet successful strategy to discover and design high-performance layered thermoelectric materials through minimizing the crystal field splitting energy of orbitals to realize high orbital degeneracy. The approach naturally leads to design maps for optimizing the thermoelectric power factor through forming solid solutions and biaxial strain. Using this approach, we predict a series of potential thermoelectric candidates from layered CaAl2Si2-type Zintl compounds. Several of them contain nontoxic, low-cost and earth-abundant elements. Moreover, the approach can be extended to several other non-cubic materials, thereby substantially accelerating the screening and design of new thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Anion exchange has been performed with nanoplates of tin sulfide (SnS) via "soft chemical" organic-free solution syntheses to yield layered pseudo-ternary tin chalcogenides on a 10 g-scale. SnS undergoes a topotactic transformation to form a series of S-substituted tin selenide (SnSe) nano/micro-plates with tuneable chalcogenide composition. SnS0.1Se0.9 nanoplates were spark plasma sintered into phase-pure, textured, dense pellets, the ZT of which has been significantly enhanced to ?1.16 from ?0.74 at 923 K via microstructure texturing control. These approaches provide versatile, scalable and low-cost routes to p-type layered tin chalcogenides with controllable composition and competitive thermoelectric performance.

Project description:High-nickel content cathode materials offer high energy density. However, the structural and surface instability may cause poor capacity retention and thermal stability of them. To circumvent this problem, nickel concentration-gradient materials have been developed to enhance high-nickel content cathode materials' thermal and cycling stability. Even though promising, the fundamental mechanism of the nickel concentration gradient's stabilization effect remains elusive because it is inseparable from nickel's valence gradient effect. To isolate nickel's valence gradient effect and understand its fundamental stabilization mechanism, we design and synthesize a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 material that is compositionally uniform and has a hierarchical valence gradient. The nickel valence gradient material shows superior cycling and thermal stability than the conventional one. The result suggests creating an oxidation state gradient that hides the more capacitive but less stable Ni3+ away from the secondary particle surfaces is a viable principle towards the optimization of high-nickel content cathode materials.

Project description:We demonstrate that the thermoelectric properties of p-type chalcogenides can be effectively improved by band convergence and hierarchical structure based on a high-entropy-stabilized matrix. The band convergence is due to the decreased light and heavy band energy offsets by alloying Cd for an enhanced Seebeck coefficient and electric transport property. Moreover, the hierarchical structure manipulated by entropy engineering introduces all-scale scattering sources for heat-carrying phonons resulting in a very low lattice thermal conductivity. Consequently, a peak zT of 2.0 at 900 K for p-type chalcogenides and a high experimental conversion efficiency of 12% at ΔT = 506 K for the fabricated segmented modules are achieved. This work provides an entropy strategy to form all-scale hierarchical structures employing high-entropy-stabilized matrix. This work will promote real applications of low-cost thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Hierarchical scattering is suggested as an effective strategy to enhance the figure of merit zT of heavy-band thermoelectric materials. Heavy-band FeNbSb half-Heusler system with intrinsically low carrier mean free path is demonstrated as a paradigm. An enhanced zT of 1.34 is obtained at 1150 K for the Fe1.05Nb0.75Ti0.25Sb compound with intentionally designed hierarchical scattering centers.

Project description:In this article, we report the family of robust layered sulfides K(2x)Mn(x)Sn(3-x)S(6) (x = 0.5-0.95) (KMS-1). These materials feature hexagonal [Mn(x)Sn(3-x)S(6)](2x-) slabs of the CdI(2) type and contain highly mobile K(+) ions in their interlayer space that are easily exchangeable with other cations and particularly strontium. KMS-1 display outstanding preference for strontium ions in highly alkaline solutions containing extremely large excess of sodium cations as well as in acidic environment where most alternative adsorbents with oxygen ligands are nearly inactive. The implication of these results is that simple layered sulfides should be considered for the efficient remediation of certain nuclear wastes.

Project description:Thermoelectric modules, consisting of multiple pairs of n- and p-type legs, enable converting heat into electricity and vice versa. However, the thermoelectric performance is often asymmetrical, in that one type outperforms the other. In this paper, we identified the relationship between the asymmetrical thermoelectric performance and the weighted mobility ratio, a correlation that can help predict the thermoelectric performance of unreported materials. Here, a reasonably high ZT for the n-type ZrCoBi-based half-Heuslers is first predicted and then experimentally verified. A high peak ZT of ~1 at 973 K can be realized by ZrCo0.9Ni0.1Bi0.85Sb0.15. The measured heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency for the unicouple of ZrCoBi-based materials can be as high as ~10% at the cold-side temperature of ~303 K and at the hot-side temperature of ~983 K. Our work demonstrates that the ZrCoBi-based half-Heuslers are highly promising for the application of mid- and high-temperature thermoelectric power generation.

Project description:Liquid-like materials are one family of promising thermoelectric materials discovered in the past years due to their advantanges of ultrahigh thermoelectric figure of merit (zT), low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their practial applications are greatly limited by the low service stability from the Cu/Ag metal deposition under large current and/or temperature gradient. Both high zT for high efficiency and large critical voltage for good stability are required for liquid-like materials, but they are usually strongly correlated and hard to be tuned individually. Herein, based on the thermodynamic analysis, it is shown that such a correlation can be decoupled through doping immobile ions into the liquid-like sublattice. Taking Cu2- δ S as an example, doping immobile Fe ions in Cu1.90S scarcely degrades the initial large critical voltage, but significantly enhances the zT to 1.5 at 1000 K by tuning the carrier concentration to the optimal range. Combining the low-cost and environmentally friendly features, these Fe-doped Cu2- δ S-based compounds show great potential in civil applications. This study sheds light on the realization of both good stability and high performance for many other liquid-like thermoelectric materials that have not been considered for real applications before.
