Project description:This study aimed to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation among young and middle-aged adults, and explore the risk factors that affect suicidal ideation.A descriptive study design was used for secondary data analysis. A total sample of 5,214 was drawn from two waves (2012-2013) of the 7th Korea Health Panel (KHP) survey. The KHP data were collected by a well-trained interviewer using the face-to-face method during home visits as well as self-report method. Descriptive statistics of frequency, percentage, chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis were performed using SPSS 22.0.The prevalence of suicidal ideation in young and middle-aged adults was 4.4% and 5.6%, respectively. For young adults, suicidal ideation risk was higher among those with low income or heavy drinking habits. In middle-aged adults, low income, poor perceived health status, negative perception of peer-compared health status, and negative social perspective were the major risk factors.There is considerable risk of suicidal ideation in adulthood. Opportunities for increased income, avoidance of heavy drinking, and the construction of positive subjective health status and social perspective should be considered in suicide prevention interventions for Korean young and middle-aged adults.

Project description:PurposeThe aim of this study was to determine the factors that influence safe sexual behaviors of Korean young adults and identify differences by gender.MethodsThis study aimed to determine which factors affected safe sexual behaviors based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Data from 437 Korean young adults (in their 20s and 30s) were collected via online survey between January 3 and January 28, 2022. The questionnaire included items on sexual body image, sexual role perception, sexual attitudes, sexual socialization, sexual communication, and safe sexual behaviors. Structural equation modeling was performed.ResultsAccording to the overall model fit of the hypothetical model, the final model was acceptable and explained 49% of safe sexual behaviors. Sexual attitudes (β=-.70, p<.001) and sexual communication (β=.53, p<.001) directly affected safe sexual behaviors, and sexual role perception (β=.42, p<.001) indirectly affected safe sexual behaviors in a combined model. There were gender differences in the path from sexual attitudes (β=-.94, p<.001) and sexual communication (β=.66, p<.001) to safe sexual behaviors and from sexual body image (β=.27, p<.001) to sexual communication.ConclusionSexual attitudes and sexual communication were predictors of safe sexual behaviors, which differed by gender. Strategies that consider sexual attitudes, sexual communication, sexual role perception, and differences between men and women should be developed to improve the safe sexual behaviors of young adults.

Project description:Background Transition to adulthood to live independently while self-managing health and daily life without parental help is crucial for young adults with chronic conditions. Despite its importance as a precursor to effectively managing lifelong conditions, little is known about the experiences of young adults with spina bifida (SB) in transition to adulthood in Asian countries. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Korean young adults with SB to identify the facilitators or barriers to the transition from adolescence to adulthood from their perspectives. Methods This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected in South Korea through three focus group interviews with 16 young adults with SB, aged 19–26, from August to November 2020. We conducted a qualitative content analysis using a conventional approach to identify the factors that facilitated and hindered the participants’ transition to adulthood. Results Two themes emerged as facilitators and barriers to the transition to adulthood. a) Facilitators: understanding and acceptance of SB, acquiring self-management skills, parenting styles encouraging autonomy, parents’ emotional support, school teachers’ thoughtful consideration, and participation in self-help groups. b) Barriers: overprotective parenting style, experience of being bullied by peers, damaged self-concept, concealing one’s chronic condition from others, and the lack of privacy in school restrooms. Conclusions Korean young adults with SB shared their experiences of struggling to properly manage their chronic conditions on their own, particularly concerning regular bladder emptying, during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. To facilitate the transition to adulthood, education on the SB and self-management for adolescents with SB and on parenting styles for their parents are important. To eliminate barriers to the transition to adulthood, improving negative perceptions of disability among students and teachers and making school restrooms CIC-friendly are needed. Project description:IntroductionConsidering that only some and not all smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there may be other factors responsible for the development of COPD among smokers. Previous researchers have reported that ethnicity could be one of factors associated with the development of COPD. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with the development of airflow limitation, suggestive of having COPD, among Korean smokers using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted over the past 3 years.MethodsA total of 2569 current and former smokers ≥40 years of age were included. Most studies exploring risk factors for COPD have compared smokers and non-smokers with smoking as only one of the independent variables. In this study, we took a different approach, studying only smokers and comparing those with or without airflow limitation.ResultsThe prevalence of airflow limitation among the study participants was 19.2% and 22.1% in current and former smokers, respectively. There was no significant correlation between the severity of airflow limitation and total lifetime smoking amount. Among the many variables examined, only age, male gender and total lifetime smoking amount (pack-years) were significant factors associated with the development of cigarette smoke-induced airflow limitation.ConslusionsOlder Korean men who are heavy smokers may be at a higher risk of developing COPD. Our findings support the importance of smoking cessation as the best way to prevent the development of COPD.

Project description:BACKGROUND:To evaluate the prevalence of blepharoptosis among Korean adults and the characteristics of blepharoptosis patients, and to determine an appropriate age threshold for recommending blepharoptosis evaluation. METHODS:The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES-V) was conducted in 2010-2012. We extracted data on 17,878 Korean adults aged more than and equal to 19?years included in KNHANES-V, and determined blepharoptosis prevalence according to age, to determine the cutoff age for recommending blepharoptosis evaluation. We also determined the possible association between blepharoptosis and obesity parameters, such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). RESULTS:There was astrong association between older age and the prevalence of blepharoptosis. The cutoff age for recommending blepharoptosis evaluation was 63?years for males, 70?years for females, and 66?years for all patients. Patients with a high BMI and large WC had a higher prevalence of blepharoptosis in all age groups except for those aged over 80?years. The association of blepharoptosis with BMI according to age group showed that in the 50-59 and 60-69?years age groups, blepharoptosis prevalence and BMI were higher. However, in the 70-79 and 80-89?years age groups, extremely obese patients (BMI?>?30) showed a decreased blepharoptosis prevalence. CONCLUSIONS:Moderate to severe blepharoptosis can result in poor visual function and exacerbate headaches and depression, leading to decreased quality of life. This study proposed an appropriate age threshold for recommending evaluation of patients with blepharoptosis among the general population of Korea.

Project description:PurposeTo systematically identify the multidimensional factors affecting homebound older adults.DesignSystematic review.MethodsWe searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO from inception to November 15, 2020. This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis guidelines. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies was used for quality assessment.FindingsNineteen studies met the review criteria; the studies were either cross-sectional or longitudinal. Most studies have focused on personal factors affecting homebound older adults. The individual construct consisted of demographic, biological, psychological, functional, and health-related factors. The structural construct included architectural, environmental, community, and social factors. Based on the different definitions of homebound used in the studies, the prevalence of homebound status ranged from 3.5% to 39.8%.ConclusionsThe prevalence of homebound status among older adults varied depending on how homebound was defined. Homebound status is the interaction between the individual and structural constructs. Variations in cultural, political, and economic conditions could influence homebound status across countries over time. Comprehensive assessment and interventions for homebound older adults based on multidisciplinary approaches are recommended for nurses.Clinical relevanceThis research will impact the development of nursing strategies to screen homebound older adults and provide targeted preventive interventions so that older adults with many risk factors do not become homebound.

Project description:In China, milk is promoted both as an optimal food and gift for older adults. To understand the product factors affecting older Chinese adult milk choices, choice simulations and surveys were conducted in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenyang, China. Participants (n = 1000, aged 45-55 years old and 65-75 years old) were asked to choose one milk product out of eight alternatives for self-consumption and gifting, respectively, and to indicate product factors under their considerations. Results showed that, for self-consumption, the top four most popular milk products (two with domestic brands and two with international brands) were chosen by 84.9% of the participants. Females and younger participants were more open to international brands than their counterparts. Popular milk products differed across cities, potentially due to brand familiarity. Brand (85.9%), on-the-pack, nutrition-related well-being messaging (72.9%), price (63.1%), shelf-life (63.0%), and production date (57.6%) were the most frequently reported product factors considered when choosing milk. More males considered price than females (66.9% vs. 60.0%, p = 0.02). Female and older participants showed greater concern for certain detailed product factors, such as production date and shelf-life, than their counterparts. Variation across cities was limited, with participants in Chengdu and Shenyang showing less concern for certain product factors such as on-the-pack, certificate-related well-being messaging. When milk products were chosen as a gift, although overall milk choice ranking remained similar, package style received increased attention (32.0% vs. 40.8%, p < 0.01), whilst all other product factors, especially price (63.1% vs. 49.5%, p < 0.01), were considered by significantly fewer participants. These findings provide valuable marketing insights, helping to understand consumer preferences and considerations in the process of milk purchase decision-making.

Project description:Sarcopenia is an age-related disorder characterised by a progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass. As the genetic biomarkers for sarcopenia are not yet well characterised, this study aimed to investigate the genetic variations related to sarcopenia in a relatively aged cohort, using genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analyses of lean body mass (LBM) in 6961 subjects. Two Korean cohorts were analysed, and subgroup GWAS was conducted for appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and skeletal muscle index. The effects of significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on gene expression were also investigated using multiple expression quantitative trait loci datasets, differentially expressed gene analysis, and gene ontology analyses. Novel genetic biomarkers were identified for LBM (rs1187118; rs3768582) and ASM (rs6772958). Their related genes, including RPS10, NUDT3, NCF2, SMG7, and ARPC5, were differently expressed in skeletal muscle tissue, while GPD1L was not. Furthermore, the 'mRNA destabilisation' biological process was enriched for sarcopenia. Our study identified RPS10, NUDT3, and GPD1L as significant genetic biomarkers for sarcopenia. These genetic loci were related to lipid and energy metabolism, suggesting that genes involved in metabolic dysregulation may lead to the pathogenesis of age-related sarcopenia.

Project description:ObjectiveWe evaluated the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project's recommended criteria for sarcopenia's association with mortality among older Korean adults.MethodsWe conducted a community-based prospective cohort study which included 560 (285 men and 275 women) older Korean adults aged ≥65 years. Muscle mass (appendicular skeletal muscle mass-to-body mass index ratio (ASM/BMI)), handgrip strength, and walking velocity were evaluated in association with all-cause mortality during 6-year follow-up. Both the lowest quintile for each parameter (ethnic-specific cutoff) and FNIH-recommended values were used as cutoffs.ResultsForty men (14.0%) and 21 women (7.6%) died during 6-year follow-up. The deceased subjects were older and had lower ASM, handgrip strength, and walking velocity. Sarcopenia defined by both low lean mass and weakness had a 4.13 (95% CI, 1.69-10.11) times higher risk of death, and sarcopenia defined by a combination of low lean mass, weakness, and slowness had a 9.56 (3.16-28.90) times higher risk of death after adjusting for covariates in men. However, these significant associations were not observed in women. In terms of cutoffs of each parameter, using the lowest quintile showed better predictive values in mortality than using the FNIH-recommended values. Moreover, new muscle mass index, ASM/BMI, provided better prognostic values than ASM/height2 in all associations.ConclusionsNew sarcopenia definition by FNIH was better able to predict 6-year mortality among Korean men. Moreover, ethnic-specific cutoffs, the lowest quintile for each parameter, predicted the higher risk of mortality than the FNIH-recommended values.

Project description:OBJECTIVES:To investigate lifestyle-related predictors of prediabetes and diabetes in young adults aged 20-39 years using data from the 2014-2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). METHODS:This study is a cross-sectional, secondary analysis using the KNHANES data. Participants were classified into normal group (fasting plasma glucose [FPG] <100 mg/dL and/or hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c] <5.7%), prediabetes group (FPG 100-125 mg/dL and/or HbA1c 5.7-6.4%), and diabetes group (FPG ?126 mg/dL and/or HbA1c ? 6.5%). The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS:Out of 4,190 participants, 27.7% of men and 16.3% of women were in the prediabetes group and 1.4% of men and 1.3% of women were in the diabetes group. Logistic regression confirmed that age and obesity are predictors of prediabetes and diabetes in both men and women. Additionally low physical activity and low education level are predictors of prediabetes in men and women, respectively (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS:This study has found that age and increased obesity are predictors of elevated blood glucose in young men and women in their 20s and 30s. A strategy to lower obesity by promoting physical activity in men in their 30s is essential to prevent metabolic syndrome and progression to prediabetes.
